Congress makes trade arrangements, not Presidents unless they can claim a national security angle. I'm wondering if when the machinery if the US govenance catches up with events, the tarriffs will be seen by them as illegal.

That game has been going on for years. The US or Canada (we're just as guilty) impose a duty/tariff knowing that it will take years to wind its way through the WTO.

In the meantime, the extra revenues are collected

First Canada Tried to Charm Trump. Now It’s Fighting Back.

he Canadians could see the trouble looming in the summer of 2016. Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s trade minister at the time, found herself, along with millions of Canadians, fixated on the unfolding United States presidential election, and it was becoming impossible to overlook the gathering clouds of protectionism. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were each casting aspersions upon Nafta as if it were self-evidently a bad deal for American workers, especially for the hollowed-out working and middle classes in the Midwestern states, like Ohio and Michigan, that would decide the election. Incredibly, at least according to Trump, America’s seemingly benign and milquetoast northern neighbor was an economic predator taking advantage of its naïve neighbor; America was the victim and Canada the villain.American ignorance about Canada has long been a fact of life — and an eye-rolling joke — for Canadians. But with the election of Trump, Americans’ lack of knowledge suddenly appeared to the inner circle of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to be a geopolitical threat. What was most troubling was less that Trump lacked a sophisticated understanding of Canada-United States relations but that he apparently deliberately didn’t care to develop one. He seemed to treat facts as negotiating tools, as if conducting diplomacy with an ally was the same as a brass-knuckled, zero-sum Manhattan real estate transaction. At a closed-door fund-raiser, Trump bragged about this tactic, gleefully recounting a White House meeting with Trudeau in which he insisted, against Trudeau’s protestations, that American had a trade deficit with Canada. “I didn’t even know,” Trump told the crowd. “I had no idea.” He then doubled down on his fact-challenged assertion via tweet: “P.M. Justin Trudeau of Canada, a very good guy, doesn’t like saying that Canada has a Surplus vs. the U.S. (negotiating), but they do ... they almost all do ... and that’s how I know!”

Sure we saw it coming.......we just did not know the specifics ..The picture is getting clear now.

For what it's worth...... the bloke that said something about a ;place in hell.....for Justin.........has actually apologized. (sort of) The bloke that also ranted about CDA..........has a heart attack.

Hmmm.

CDA must remain the level headed one with logic and reason not erratic emotional , insane tweets.

The question is WHO got TRump riled up?? Trudeau had said that before. But some AZZhole told trump he would look weak in front of Kim......... because of what Trudeau had said. The Stupidity is incredible.

So it boils down to the Donald's image........not anything of substance.

Interesting that many in Trump country states are upset with Trump's behavior as any punitive actions on CDA will HURT them.

I am betting it was BOLTON that got Trump fired up........as that is his ideology and thinking.

It's all about Donald .... and Canada is going to pay (according to Donald) for daring to stand up to Donald.

The guy is like a Dark Ages tribal chieftan, not the President of a democracy.

REVENGE......

Seems that many inthe US are against what TRump has done. They are very aware that any tariffs etc on CDA will negatively affect them. Trump has no clue ........and is prepared to do damage to the people he gave tax cuts to.
CDA has to be steady, calm NON REACTIVE.......but just continue with tact,; diplomacy and facts.......... and NOT fuel....... the insane person in the White house.

He truly is mentally disordered and operates ona very primal regressive level. For gosh sakes he is over 70...and acts like a five yr old bully. It is like he has a thwarted development factor. Never matured Didn't have to. He is irrational.....and dangerous ......but mainly to his allies. All dictators are safe from him. He is determined to have a big place in history and will probably achieve that.. at the cost to many. Sociopaths like him don't care who they have to hurt to get THEIR WAY Revenge is big with psychopaths.......even for imagined slights. Look at the people he has hurt. Careers he has destroyed. The body count is rising.

Hey Cliffy do you think anyone from Quebec should be making silly statements like that when they balance their budgets on $10 billion dollar transfer payments?

It appears as if he has always got his way. He's not used to having anyone stand up to him, hence the whacky irrationality of his over-reaction to Trudeau. Meuller must be driving him into connoption fits.

Indeed....and by virtue of those undesirable personality traits he is ill suited for the job. Unfortunately he is a master manipulator whose photo ops have dazzled his supporters .He is nothing but a shyster .....through and through. who has a problem speaking basic english. But Czars with money ..Well .you get the drift ;-)

Trump will be unable to turn the other cheek Mueller wise.

He will talk to him because he has to in order to prove his toughness.

Mueller will destroy him.

Trump is in far too many people's heads 24/7 ad infinitum. That is NOT normal!
It probably has something to do with the fact that he is a complete lunatic at the helm of the greatest war machine in history. If you are not afraid, you are not paying attention.

Exactly.... and that is not exaggeration.

And now he is being sued, the pressure from Mueller is probably getting to him a bit..... and we can expect him to be even more erratic. Wait until he feels cornered.....The bloke is UNSTABLE and is destabilizing the planet. (excerpt of coure Putin's Russia, and now Kim's NK.. .This trade waar STARTED by the SOB is totally counterproductive.....

I don't see the need to get too melo dramatic. He has a huge ego, is a little overwhelmed with his perceived self importance, he talks too much without thinking, other than that he's probably not dangerous to anybody. I think he probably tries too hard to do a good job, recognition being the main reason. He's not the first person we've seen like that. Bill Vanderzalm comes to mind!

He's nuts and he should be removed from power forthwith.

Hitler had that same effect on people for a lot of the same reasons.
