The opening ceremony was very well done.

Let's get it on, Blackleaf! England vs. USA!

England have never beaten the USA in the World Cup.

The USA pulled off a shock 1-0 victory in Belo Horizonte in Brazil in the 1950 World Cup (the "Miracle on Grass"), which was the first World Cup that England played in, and then the two drew 1-1 in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

They play each other on Friday.

Here we go for Qatar Vs Ecuador...

GOAL (NOT!)
Ecuador captain Valencia, his country's top scorer, put the ball in the net after just 2.5 minutes and celebrated thinking he's become the first Ecuadorian to score in four World Cups.

When the teams lined up for the kick-off the referee went to VAR (video referee) after thinking there was an infringement and the goal was disallowed, though we aren't sure why. He didn't seem to be offside. What did Ecuador do?!

This could be a tight game. Tiny Qatar, smaller than Northern Ireland, are ranked 50th in the world. Ecuador, around the size of the UK, are ranked 44th. It's an amazing achievement for Qatar to be ranked that high, climbing from 113th.

Two goals in the first half from captain and top scorer Enner Valencia were enough for Ecuador to see off hosts Qatar in Al Khor City, where England will play USA on Friday in a stadium inspired by a Bedouin tent.

Qatar, playing their first ever World Cup game, became the first World Cup hosts to lose their opening game.

The hosts managed just two touches in the opposition box in the whole game.

There were just 11 shots on goal in the match, the lowest in a World Cup since 1966.

Tougher tests await both these teams, with Senegal and Netherlands awaiting in the group.

The winners of this group will play either England, Iran, USA or Wales in the Last 16, and so will the group runner-up.

Canada are in this World Cup. They're in Group F where they will play Morocco and two very tough matches against Belgium and Croatia.

Should Canada miraculously qualify from the group, they will most likely play Germany or Spain in the Last 16.

So it's going to be difficult.

Canadians are in for a jam-packed sports weekend with the Grey Cup kicking off on Sunday, pitting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers against the Toronto Argonauts, and the FIFA World Cup, celebrating its official opening on the same day, in Qatar, Western Asia.

Opposite weather conditions are in place for both sports: Grey Cup taking place in a sunny but chilly Regina, while the various countries participating in the World Cup will be playing in some mighty hot weather. No matter – both games are great equalizers for those who enjoy sports.

And for those who love sports as the backdrop for a great party!

Qatar Cuisine
One of Qatar’s most prolific food voices is famed chef and disability activist Noor Al Mazroei, known for her expertise in Qatar’s culinary heritage. Chef Noor’s specialty is in adapting traditional dishes into healthier meals, with nods to veganism and gluten-free. In her career, she has worked closely with the Qatar International Food Festival along with a variety of well-known chefs and Food Network stars, including Masaharu Morimoto and Alain Ducasse. In one of her many adventures, she accompanied soccer star David Beckham on a tour throughout Qatar’s markets as part of his work for Qatar Tourism.

“I was passionate about cooking since my childhood, and I used to share my recipes with family and friends until social media allowed me to share my passion for cooking with the rest of the world,” writes Chef Noor on visitqatar.com. “Food is your paint – so be creative.”

Qatar cuisine is based on traditional Arab cuisine, with a nod to specific spice blends. The Machbus (or Machboos) – a dish consisting of meat (chicken, lamb, beef even camel), rice and vegetables – is national in scope and heritage, and is slow cooked to bring out all the flavours. Another dish, a dessert named Luqaimat, is a traditional sweet resembling little dumplings, made with butter, sugar, saffron and cardamon, deep-fried and dipped in sugar water or honey – crisp on the outside, soft on the inside and absolutely delicious. Dates are a mainstay in many dishes, and seafood is abundant.

Spice blends are the key to a dish’s success, and, in Qatar, each dish has a different blend: One of the most common is the Bizar blend of spices, and includes black pepper, dried ginger, whole cardamom, coriander seeds and cinnamon sticks, clove, dried red chili and turmeric.

Qatar dishes are flavourful and fulsome, comforting and delicious!

A corrupt organization holding a sporting event in a country that bought the rights to do so through bribery.

Doesn't sound all that great.

Impressive England demolish Iran

Group B

England 6-2 Iran

skysports-bukayo-saka-england_5973675.jpg

England's Fifa World Cup campaign opened in thoroughly convincing fashion as they outclassed Iran during an incident-packed match in Doha.

Gareth Southgate's side strolled to victory, with Iran's hopeless plight made worse by the early loss of goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to concussion after a clash of heads with team-mate Majid Hosseini.

Jude Bellingham got England off the mark in this World Cup with a soaring header from Luke Shaw's cross 10 minutes before the break and the game was wrapped up before half-time thanks to Bukayo Saka's fine strike and Raheem Sterling's classy volley with the outside of his foot from Harry Kane's cross.

26 minutes

There were a total of 26 minutes of injury time in this match, which may be a record. Iran's second goal, a penalty, came 13 minutes into second half injury time.

Iran's supporters were given a moment of real delight when Mehdi Taremi scored a fine goal after 65 minutes but it only produced a ruthless response from England as Saka scored his second and substitute Marcus Rashford scored with his first involvement - both smooth, composed strikes.

To put the gloss on an incredibly dominant display, Jack Grealish slotted home from close range after a good run and pull back by Callum Wilson.

Iran did pull another back in injury time when Taremi slotted in a penalty after a John Stones foul.

The game was played out against the backdrop of more off-field controversy here in Qatar after England were forced to ditch plans to wear the OneLove armband promoting diversity and inclusivity under threat from Fifa of players being cautioned should they carry out the gesture of support.
