And there is not really a hell of a lot wrong with that.....................often it's more a statement of loyalty than of fact!

I don't know about that. Most want to be called 'African-Americans'. They place high importance on their African descent and know that their ancestors were slaves to anglo-europeans. If the inherent racism in America was really over and done with they might call themselves Americans but the interjection of the African into it is a clear signal of where they really stand.
most all of us in canada have another country to put in front of our canadianism, with me its irish-canadian,
which I called myself often as a child, and also had to write that on many government forms.
that slowly faded away politically, but in reality, it is there.
sure the african american blacks do have a 'different' past, and we don't forget that, but they are
proud americans, and 'do' say that, i've heard it often, just like any other americans.
and the title 'african american' only arrived to get rid of that 'negro' expression, and
it does sound much more respectful to say african american.
