Justin has said squat about 24 Sussex. I listened to an hour long interview with Maureen McTeer about it and she says that it is a pile of junk that should be knocked and rebuilt properly ( the cheaper option, by far apparently).
Unfortunately, the Canadian taxpayers is going to be saddled with piecemeal renovation of that leaky, rotten heap with little historic value (goes all the easy back to Louis St Laurent) because the "gotcha" crowd will always try to make it personal and make it sound like an Imperial Edict to
fancy up a palace.
I'm sure that the Harper's thought so as well but they put up with it and said nothing because of the exact reaction seen in this thread. Trudeau has said nought, as well but his mother opened up about the state of the place. She did live there herself.
It is not a presidential palace. It is a substantial old home that was totally gutted in the 50's and the old interior was replaced with cheap drywall and mouldings. There have been bits and pieces tacked on, like a swimming pool and they were badly done, tack-on renos. All of this shouldn't matter to us hard pressed taxpayers except it is leaky, rotten and falling down and we own it. The repair bill is literally twice the price of new construction and all that you have at the end is a half-assed pile of junk that doesn't leak anymore.
Here's the real kicker in my mind. Our PMs (all of them, not just Justin) entertain the visiting leadership from all around the world in this dump. Perhaps it is appropriate that we present ourselves to the world as cheap, shoddy and second class. If it is too politically dangerous for a PM to replace it, that is precisely what we are.
Before your dump the "Lib" bullsh1t on me, I didn't vote Liberal. I just find the steady stream of stupid that is posted in threads like this to be really irritating. Have a lillte class, people. Canada is capable of putting a foot forward that doesn't look like a rotten sneaker.
This is NOT about partisan politics. Go find a subject that is and stop trying to block what needs to be done for a cheap gotcha".
