Your suggestions are all well and good when applied to city folk, Nick. Here in the hinterland - not so much. We won't be going back to horse and buggy.
That is obvious to most, yet there is no shortage of yakkity-yaks who see rural residents as excuse enough to abandon all efforts to reduce emissions, even in cities. Major population centers are where the problem is greatest, you don't see smog clouds hovering over Armpit Saskatchewan.
Mass transit is an obvious alternative. Take someplace like Vancouver for example, compare the cost of gasoline, downtown parking if needed, and wear and tear on both vehicle and peace of mind to the cost of a monthly transit pass. Add to that that you can trade an hour or two behind the wheel in rush hour traffic to time on your butt reading or playing candy-crush on your phone.

I know a guy who badly needed a job and got offered work at UPS handling parcels at their warehouse.........................................
and it is Afternoon SHIFT of course..............................................
so the guy could get there all right....................................
but the hours of work were erratic...................................
he might get 3-4 hours work one day and 7-9 the next etc........................................
If he does a short shift then he can use pubic transit to get home..............................................
if he does close to a full shift...................................................
and in our McJob economy the company will NOT GUARANTEE any hours of work..................................
then he MUST SLEEP in the Go Bus station for MOST OF THE NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Until the station revives at 6am and the bus can then take him HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ever try to get from where you are to where you need to be on a Vancouver bus in a timely manner?
I had an opportunity to spend a couple of days in Portland, Oregon a few years back. They like to call themselves the greenest city in America. I found a hotel right downtown, parked my car and just walked for the time I was there. The first thing that impressed me about downtown was the lack of car traffic. Wide sidewalks, buses and bicycles everywhere. Obviously there had been a conscious decision made by local government to pursue this avenue, and obviously it was well supported by the citizens.
There will always be people for whom mass transit just doesn't work, lack of routes or schedules that fit is a big one, as well as physical limitations that some people have. But there are plenty for whom the only obstacles are personal prejudice or just plain laziness.

The more appropriate question would be "how hard are you willing to try?". Is walking a few blocks to/from the stop going to give you reason enough to not try, is leaving a little earlier out of the question?

More like how much of your day are you willing to give up waiting for buses? When I lived in East Van (a long time ago) I could walk to work 5 minutes faster than taking two busses and the walk at the end because no buses connected. The taking a bus to work does not work as well in practice as it does in theory. Especially if you work outside the 9-5 time frame or at multiple locations. One can no longer plan on buying a house with easy access to wher you work because there is no garauntee that your job will be in the same location or even exist next year except maybe for government employees. Try getting from Port Coquitlam to Horseshoe Bay on the bus. Or even yo UBC.
I already disproved your "hop on transit" claim for Vancouver.
Buses to and from SkySlug stations are stuck in the ssme traffic thanks to zero forward thinking on future based infrastructure.
Then you need to consider the impact of the influx of ethnic diversity. They came from places where could only dream of shedding the shackles of transit or never had the financial ability to experience the freedom a vehicle gives to live the Canadian experience of camping, hiking, skiing, hunting, fishing. They didn't come here to be stuck in another metropolis.
I don't know what you value your personal time at but in Vancouver an hour a day of more personal time is highly prized.
20hrs per month of freedom is worth every penny in ownerdhip/operating costs.
As for Armpit you need hit the city weekly. If you shop online to cut down on city trips you are driving to the post office daily.
That best case situation, if you get sick or injured your trips to the city can be daily.

Pretty well everything you've found wrong can be fixed or changed or isn't a big deal. With the cost of all the gas that's not being burned a lot of fixes can be paid for. You could buy a locker to keep a change of clothes, a bar of soap and stick of deodorant. Bus schedules aren't carve in stone, rubber pullovers are available for shoes. There's always lots of reasons to whine and bitch.
