No one can vote who uses an alias named after great philosophers. These were great minds, their names should be retired, just like hockey player's numbers. Just kidding Socs!

It's a interesting topic. I guess you could argue that only the mentally fit should vote. I'm not saying it would be right, I'm just saying it's a worthwhile debate. What about criminals in jail? Should they have the privilege? What about people walking around free with criminal records? What about people from Toronto?

I need to ponder over this one for awhile.

Hey  that is a juicy one, mentally fit I think would start from having knowledge of the issues, Criminals, they should not have any say on the out side.......................One time deal, a career criminal should not have the liberty to a debate on the out side.................world.....
A criminal record would depend on the rating of the record, a habitual criminal offender would void his or her liberty to vote civiclly, provincially and federally.....
Hey  Toronto, I don't know they hold the key to the house of Commons.

I think that it should be a voters responsibility to be informed about the candidates of their riding, they should know the platform of the party of their choice as well the credentials of the their MPs' as well be very familier with the history of the party, ie. knowlege of their track record of achivments as political party.
I heard the other day some one sugesting to pay voters to vote. Should that happen Canada will have moved to an era of a self serving society, as well declarerd that their vote is promoted by the carrot on the stick rather then the love for the Country..............:idea::idea:

We might get a better feel of the country's pulse if voting was mandatory.

Voting is manditory in Australia, so it might help.... dunno how well though, because all one needs to do is screw up their ballot someway to void them and it'd be the same as not voting......

.... Then again, if you're already there at the poll, you might as well vote something.

As it goes for who should be allowed to vote and who shouldn't..... to me it's simple.

If you are a citizen of the nation, you have the right to vote. It shouldn't matter where you come from in the country (Toronto), if you have a criminal record, currently in jail, mentally challenged, or a hippy..... if you're a citizen and 18 years of age or older, you get to vote.

Anything else starts to get not just confusing, but can become a big mess when people are trying to figure out if they qualify to vote or not, and some of the above shouldn't matter in someone's right to vote anyways.

If you have a criminal record, who cares.... you can't actually murder someone with that one vote..... sure we can all delve into the whole voting for a leader who starts a war who in turn can be responsible for murders.... but that's taking things a bit far, and has no relation to that voters' criminal record.

If you're in jail, you should still be permitted to vote, because even though you have limited rights in prison, you still have rights. You still should be able to vote for the person you think can best represent your interests in jail.... be that quality of living, making sure you get proper food, etc. etc..... sure many here might think they should be so lucky to get anything, let alone the right to vote..... but don't forget that not everybody in jail is a murderous rapist monster..... and you can't paint them all with the same brush. Sure it'd be easier, but it's not right.

As it goes for the mentally challenged.... they have just as many rights as you and I, and should be allowed to vote for whoever they like, or who will bring them more opportunity into their lives, etc. It shouldn't make a difference on how informed they are on a party's plans and direction......

hell, if they like a party simply because of their colours or the leader sounds funny, who gives a crap? There are plenty of people in here alone who plan to vote for a party based on far less and for dumber reasons, so I don't see a difference.

And when you start to filter out people from voting, then you're not going to get a very accurate election now are you?

Exactly what's going to happen if someone votes for a party that is in complete last place? Are people going to start questioning their mentality and claim they can't make sound decisions, and thus remove their rights to vote?

Then all you have after a while is just those who will vote for one party or the second place party....... certainly not a democracy if you ask me...... because those parties or party will eventually get into power everytime, all the while millions of voices are shut out of the decision making.

You simply will not have the voice of the entire country put into the election.... you will only have the select few, therefore the government will represent even less people in the country then it currently does..... and then nobody will want to vote at all because it'll be even more pointless then it already is.

Everybody should have the right to vote, whether you agree or disagree with their views, whether they are in jail or not.... whether they are mentally challenged.... if they're Irish..... if they have a criminal record.....

hell.... half of the politicians are criminals..... sounds pretty dumb to restrict other criminals from voting for them.

8O Wow! Did you ever get THAT backwards!

Screening? Tests? Screw that. It's hard enough to get voter turnout....

Sure I can see the problems you are talking about LW, One thing that pisses me totally during elections, is people with out the ability to read and write are having a say on the political out come of this country……. People who can not read or write should complete a course of literary ability and then be allowed to vote……… Otherwise a house hold of 7 people with only 2 able to read and write should not give the green light to 5 people of a household that do not know who they are voting for because of their illiteracy…………………To have a family member tell another you vote for the same party I vote for, is absurd, manipulative, and down and out fraud………….I don’t think there is anything backwards about that LW…….A voter turn out with a bunch of tribal votes doese'nt make a fair electorol system.....

You're allowed to vote aren't you? Who T/F appointed you as God?

BTW ... check out the quality of your own literacy skills before you condemn others. Who are you? Harper?

Dam right... if they are going to vote NDP let them in...

If they are voting Liberal or Conservative, they need to be sent home to sit in a corner with a dunce cap.

Hey Boomer I like you better with your new avatar, you will turn blue in the face because the Liberals will be again the ruler of this Country, the Cons will go down memory lane as the Bone heads of the 21st Century……………
The NDP, are proletarians and they have no clue what comes first, the horse or the cart…..to them it is obviously the cart, and that is why they will never form a federal government…..PEACE pal…..

By the way, I have done well on my command of the English Language. They say if a person has a 500 word vocabulary can get around with no problem. In 45 years my love for Canada has propelled me to have a vocabulary which helped me make some good doe during my time…………..

Mouth will only get you so far. How are you when it comes to spelling?... See, some people view those of you who aren't great spellers as low class unintellectuals too. Guess you won't be out on voting day - by your own condemnation. Maybe you can send Dion a card or something....

Look you are twisting things here and the name calling is not gone do you any good….
Jack Layton is never going to be the PM of this land not even past 100 years after I am gone. The NDP platform has always been tax the rich until they can’t walk, and give it to a less productive crowd…… I don’t have a problem looking after the needy, but I do have a problem when an NDP Government has no real economic ideas in place to take the country to were it should go financially…….
