Therein lies the trouble!!
We here in Canada are so used to the petty crimes, it's a normal every-day occurrence. Nobody cares... signs of the times!!
But then, when these sunglass-cases move up the crime ladder and reach beatings, rape, drug smuggling... well, then ...o.k.... perhaps we should do something about it.

Nib it in the bud, I say! Don't belittle or put up with such behavior... not at all! If the kid didn't get it straight from home, then society has to teach what's right and wrong to him/her.

Are you contending that stealing sunglasses leads to more heinous crimes, like it's a gateway crime? That's one hell of a slippery slope if that is indeed your contention.

There is a huge difference between belittling something and using context. Teenagers aren't exactly known for having the best judgment, but most will learn lessons from such lapses. I suppose we could punish them harshly, and send them to the correction system, aka as crime school...

Here's a novel sentence for the child: put her to work in one of those chinese factories at the prevailing wage until she earns the cost of the glasses, trial, etc.

Yeah, she could work in a factory that makes those sunglasses..... or maybe work for the Gap.

I noticed this in the news earlier today but didn't think it was all that worth posting..... a teenage brat get's detained in China for shoplifting sunglasses?

Seriously, who cares? Let her sqwirm a while and maybe scare some crap into her next time.

Good for China.... Good for Mexico.... Boo to the US :p

If that's the way you view it loon, you work on getting the law changed to be stiffer ALL AROUND. You don't hold up one kid and make an example out of them. I won't argue that it could be stiffer. But I strongly disagree that you start with one kid, scared and alone in a foreign country, to make an example.
It's this particular kid and circumstance we are talking about, Karrie. China put this up for debate - I gave my opinion, that's all! I'm not working on anything. It would be good though, if the laws would be more direct and more effective in our own country.
Besides, the girl is not alone, she has two teachers with her. I hope she realizes the inconvenience she is causing these people.

I once talked with a troubled teenager, who had done a few B and E. He told me, "crime does pay!" My argument was it doesn't. Well, he ought to know, sadly.

Good deal! You guys caught one of ours:

Bury her up to her neck and stone her.

Bullet in the brain.

20 years in a chow mein factory, or lead-based dog food factory.

A 1st hand course in living with your pigs or fowl. Flu 101, so to speak

Teach her how to fish out of season.

Send her to Chinese medical school so she can come here a drive a cab.

lots of neat little things they could do to a little 15 year old.

Betcha them jail guards love'er. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh so, ritterrr whiii girrrrrrr. hehehehehehehehe.

Inscrutable, those Chinese. hoooooooooooonose what they'll do.

Water torture?

No mo fingah nairs fo yooo, lound eye.

Maybe we could trade Harpo for her. We win there for sure.

I'm shure things shall unfold as they should and "China' here will go home a satisfied person...........philosophically speaking.................Nice to see you so happy, China.

What do you think of the Chinese street gangs we have here in Canada........ok eh??

Want them back?

We could take up a collection for their fare.

You betcha

And who the fukk said anyone was blameless you twit!!

doing fine Sal.
too much sun in China ,not enough sun glasses ....the expensive ones, lol

Glad to hear you are fine China.

As for the glasses, I am wearing a pair now while on the computer as I had my eyes tested this morning and they put those wonderful drops in my eyes that make you look like ET and make you feel like the retina is burning out if you get any light near them...lol.

Sun glasses are a must.I could send you a nice designer label. The thing is, they likely were made in China.

So, just pinch a pair and walk out of the store.

I think it is disgraceful and disgusting at the same time, as a visitor to steal from the host!!! Not hard to imagine she would take some antic dishes from my home, if she was my weekend guest!

First of all she needs to apologize publicly to the shop owner, then to the whole country. She also needs to publicly say she is sorry to all Canadians, for giving us all a bad reputation!!

As an atonement exercise she should be put on the street-sweeping-team in Honkong for a month!!

I'm NOT kidding!
Come on loon. That is over the top. The punishment should fit the crime. She's some diva kid. Bring her down a notch or two. Don't execute her.

Oh, and I doubt she would steal your antics. 15 year olds like trendy not dusty. ;)

Anything starts with the first step. This kid could already be a seasoned shoplifter, considering the boldness to do this in a foreign country!
That's one hell of a slippery slope if that is indeed your contention.
Not slippery at all, Tonington. What exactly do you mean to imply with that sentence? Speak your mind.

No, that's not what I mean. I suggested that she should apologize for her rude behavior to the Chinese. Canadians don't want an apology from her, I'm told!. I, as Canadian as anybody, would think it very appropriate for her to apologize on National Television for having represented us in such a bad way. That would be appropriate punishment to last a while or perhaps a lifetime.

I suggested she should sweep the streets = just an example for some kind of community work.
Poor thing... all alone in China!

How is it I get the feeling that by the end of this thread I'll be the one who needs to be sent to jail??? :p:lol:

Loon, why should she have to apologize to the Chinese people? She did not commit an offense against the people of China, she committed a petty crime against a shopkeeper. If anyone is to receive an apology, it would be the shopkeeper.

You an ex teacher, Loon? yes............good.

We don't want to send a Cdn. icon to jail (loon, got that?), but would strongly suggest you get back on the meds, ok.

Sweeping streets in China? Lord knows what she could bring back. Maybe even get charged with stealing dust. You know how "they" feel about that.

Course, WE have a free country, so, whatever does it for ya.

Better I sign off on this one as I will be banned before long.

But that is exactly what I'm suggesting... bring her down a couple of notches by making her apologize and make reparations through free labour. Look on the bright side, Sal, what an exiting story she will have to tell later to her kids and grandkids, with the moral ending, "don't do what I did, or you end up as I did!!!"8O

For the extra emphasis on the wrongness of what she did. After all, the Chinese were her hosts. You don't see it that way, do you?

I'm only trying to make you all aware that stealing is not a trivial matter to be swept under the carpet. It is doubly bad, if you are a visitor in another country, regardless of that countries own crime rates or their Asian gangs. We should always conduct ourselves in an honorable, dignified manner.
I don't expect more from this kid than to be clean, polite and honest! Is that too much?

Here's a thought.... Why don't we do away with all the mamby-pamby political correctness crap and the Young Offenders Act (or whatever it's called now) so maybe kids can learn that it's NOT okay to be disrespectful and yes your shyte DOES stink and somewhere in the world, it's okay to spank your prima donna princess ass for being a jerk.

Woof!

So, would it be different, if this girl was 20 years old?

Loon, she has already been punished for her deed and I'm sure her parents will end up paying a fine of some sort as well, it's not like she is getting off scott free. It sounds like you want to have her paraded in front of the media as some sort of propaganda piece extolling the fairness of the Chinese judicial system.

Certainly a lapse of foresight on the young girls part.

I wonder, has anyone here ever had anything stolen from them? I once had a video camera stolen from my house and another time I had a bag of microphones, cables and miscellaneous items stolen from my car. The feeling of frustration and violation is far worse than if someone had punched me in the head. They were items I purchased with my hard earned money. But some punk felt it was ok to relieve me of my personnal property.

Perhaps the young lass may feel frightened right now but a little scare might be what she needs to drive home the point that stealing is not acceptable, whether in China or Canada. Respect for others is becoming less important everyday. And yes it starts with the small stuff.

Agreed.... perhaps if one wanted to dig a bit further, she could apoligize for wasting the officer's time in arresting her for something so petty, but a national apology might be stretching it for this type of crime.

I think what's more bothersome is that this even made the news here in Canada or China. It's shoplifting by a teenager..... whoopie do. We'll never know who she was, due to youth protection in the media, it wasn't some grand scheme to take millions from China.... I mean, how often do we hear about the shoplifting here in Canada in the news? How about China??

What was the point in bringing attention to this anyways?

Yeah, last year someone stole my bike from inside the apartment building.... it was rusted and a few years old, there was a brand new fancy one with more gears then mine right beside it unlocked, yet they stole mine.

Idiot.

Oh well, I hardly used it. No real loss.
