Which may be changing, if the employee in the plant is to be believed. Apparently there is a lot of worry in Mexico as a lot of jobs are being out-sourced to China. Sounds plausible, though.
There is already plenty of immigration through sensible, legal channels. That option is open to all persons. How does one "prevent" illegal immigration? Are you a fan of the border fence option? Or should we just shoot them on sight?
We've all agreed, even the OP, that government isnt doing it's job on the enforcement side, but if they take a hard stance, BLEEDING HEARTS will object to deportation.
What exactly is it you are suggesting the US do to address the illegal immigrant problem? Seems to me these folks are fleeing Canada who is deporting them anyway. Problem solved *wink*
For the record, bleeding hearts are not weak. They just live with thier head in the clouds and think that if we just talk nice to everyone the world will be a better place. (and that that is possible)
Jobs are being outsourced because of labor unions. What used to be a great thing for the average worker has now demanded payscales that bankrupt companies. I freaking hate unions.
I certainly don't object to deportation. It's tough on people, but if you're gonna keep people coming by the legal routes, you're gonna have to deter the illegal ones. Very similar problems in the UK, the main difference being that the USA isn't overcrowded like the UK.
Near as I can see, the only useful purpose for a Union any more is to guarantee old thinking and incompetence. Why would any worker complain about paying taxes yet gratefully pay an organization that bites the hand that feeds it?

I wonder why anyone (including the subject of the moving to Canada article) live in the U.S. for 15 years and not seek legal status? Others in the article had been in residence for 12 years.
Seems rather odd one has free schooling for the children, free medical assistance, and doesn't pay a dime in taxes. Shows a sincere lack of responsibility towards becoming a good contributing member of a nation.
The land of plenty is running dry.... and the free rides are coming to the end of the line.

You can put down roots anywhere in the world - but when you surrender citizenship, you're leaving a big part of heritage behind.

I was an Alien Resident of the U.S. for over 16 years legally before I took out my citizenship which finally occurred this year - and even then I had the option of duality - keeping my former citizenship along with becoming a U.S. citizen.
There are many situations where huge numbers of people from Mexico, Central and South America are working legally in the U.S. deriving benefits and still voting in their own country - plus sending home much needed money to keep their families afloat.
The keyword here is 'legal'. The illegals have to resort to ventures none of them would do under normal circumstances, which often leads them into places which do not benefit them, their families, nor their nation(s) - either their illegal one or the one of their birthplace.
They become virtually non-persons. It is a paranoid and desperate way to live. I even hate using the word 'illegal' because it is a matter of documentation only - not legality.
They are being held up by proper documentation. Why they choose to adopt the illegal
situation and then raise families into that situation is beyond me.

For some, it could be survival. I have a good friend whose criminal record and debtload of fines here got in the way of ever getting an opportunity to stand straight and tall again. After Hurricane Andrew, as an illegal, he made enough money putting roofs on Florida houses to pay off all those Canadian fines and set himself up in a great business. No employer will ever look down his/her nose at him again - and some of those people actually have to beg my friend to come to their jobsites. You can't just tar everyone with the same brush.

I don't - I have worked with many people from Mexico and farther south - illegal residents in the farms and orchards of California - and I have done everything possible to direct them through the legal channels.
No matter how excellent a worker a person it, or how honest and sincere - until they become valid as members belonging to a community (for legal or temporarily legal).... it makes such a difference in their lives.
I have talked with many illegal workers - it is a terrible place for them to be in. Not by government persecution but in their own consciences.
You speak of one friend - I have more than hundreds of cases - and they in the majority would rather choose to belong than live in fear of losing all they have worked for.
As for 'looking down their noses'....you would be wrong. In a great many cases the Latino workers are excellent at hard work, long hours and dedication to their jobs even in fear that one day they may lose everything. The pressure on them is enormous and still they work.

Yeah there has to be a balance. There are a lot of workers with no or impotent unions who are barely surviving. A good example is social services. Tough to raise a family on 10 bucks an hour.
Tell that to the tax paying born and raised in Florida roofer who's struggling to survive because he can't compete with the black market.
and if any "Canadian" had comeup with the same bullshyte that this guy did, they would have been blasted the same way.
So the lesson is that you can just walk away from your penalties for poor behavior. Nice. At least for awhile.
If he had a criminal record they wouldn't legally let him stay in the US without government "forgivenness". But he's too good for that, right? He's learned that if you screw up, just go somewhere else.

Had to pay for the wife and kids somehow.... It beat being labelled "welfare bum" in Ontario.
