and cracking a joke someone doesn't find funny warrants a personal insult?

beat away at this dead horse if you like, my point stands.

Well as I said, your name doesn't bother me at all. I like it to be honest. It's a fine name. I see that you left that part of my quote out to continue your rant.

I was just pointing out the immaturity in your insult to Gen. Pace for naming his daughter Tiffany.

Unless the other marine needing sticking up for is gay of course.

 Ok

Funny how you use that as an attempt at being insulting though. The very people you are trying to defend you use their sexual preference as a way to insult someone who isn't.

Generalizations are bad, coming from both sides.

I've known gay Marines, male and female. I couldn't give two s's or a "f" what some other adult does. You may wish that you could tar us all with your jaundiced brush, but the fact of the matter is, we Marines of hetero persuasion, do not prowl the catwalks of the barracks and base housing looking to "out" homosexuals and lesbians.

In fact it isn't ever an issue until someone feels that they need to throw their homosexuality or any sexuality for that matter, in everyones face. Then THATS when all the drama starts.

Like it or not, being cognizant of everyones sexual preferences where you work is not a factor whatsoever in getting a job done. But for some reason, it seems that gays(some, not all) need to let everyone know they are gay. Well, whoopty f'ing doo. Good for you, be gay, be proud! But why must other people have to know about it? And why should they care?

I wasn't attempting to be insulting. I was being sarcastic, pointing out that you are holding double standards. You're sticking up for a man under the umbrella of 'we marines stick together', yet he has been insulting your fellow marines. why stick up for a marine only if his sexuality is one you share? why is it okay to denounce all the marines who are homosexual? where is your outrage at the insult to them?

Actually, I wasn't trying to 'tar you all'. But. To get all twisted out of shape because I cracked a harmless joke about the general's daughter's name, yes NOT get twisted out of shape when fellow marines are being called immoral, seems a bit odd. No, not a bit odd... very odd.

And the issue here started with General Pace. He's the one who criticised the military's 'don't ask don't tell' policy, isn't he? Isn't he the one who started the problem?

I was sticking up for his right to say what he did. Do you think all Marines agree with each other on everything? I assure you we don't.

I am not saying there aren't gay Marines but I didn't know any in my time. I am not naive to believe that there aren't any. I am sure that Gen Pace knows that there are some Marines currently serving that are as well.

So it isn't a double standard as I am sticking up for a Marine who said his piece while people are telling him to shut up.

What if he had said cheating on your spouse is an immoral act and shouldnt be tolerated? Which, there just happens to be a regualtion against also.

I suppose we would all need to be up in arms and burning General Pace in effigy for that too.

Because..lol...if you think there are alot of gays in the military, there are at least 100 times that number of people cheating on their spouses.

But I'm sure someone would come along and defend the adulterers right to wreck families and destroy esprit de corps. Ya know..free-will, and openess, and ****. There's always one...

Now I know that goes on for sure and when a Marine speaks up and decides to use the UCMJ instead of (or with) his fists the perpetrating Marine is severly punished. I am talking a Court Marshall with BRIG time which can inlude a Bad Conduct Discharge if convicted. I've seen that happen twice.

Is the contention that homosexuality is in any way comparable to adultery?

Nice red herring...

I see where General Peter pace will not be renominated to the Joint Chief's of Staff. I think it is good for General Pace. He has too much integrity to be associated with the current US administration and he is now joins the ranks of the other distinuished military leaders who have had their integrity assailed by the screw-ups ordered by their Commander-in-Chief. While the damage is not as great as that done to General Colin Powell it none the less is distressing to some Americans.

I must agree with the opinions put forth by self_activated earlier on in this thread. In Canada, a member of the Canadian Forces who would publicly make a statement in regards to the policies of the Forces (e.g., the right of homosexual citizens to serve and defend Her Majesty The Queen of Canada), should be summarily dismissed and brought up on charges. A member of the armed forces, in all matters relating to said armed forces, is entitled to express only those opinions approved of by and encouraged by the military. That’s part of the job. The same should be true in the United States of America.

First off, homosexuals do NOT have a right to serve in the US Armed Services if they are open about their sexuality. So Pace's only crime was upsetting the PC crowd. No crime was committed.

I can't believe how backasswards the 'don't ask don't tell' policy is. You can die for your country, just don't be honest about who you are when you do it!

Well that is just the policy. It is what it is and will be until it is changed.

Whether you want to believe it or not, if someone was to come out of the closet there would be a lot of problems for him if we didn't have that policy. The military is a different culture.

The general is entitled to his views. I'm sure the heterosexual lobby groups would agree. By the way, are there any?

Um, yeah - the entire "Christian" family values let's-go-back-to-the-fifties knuckledragging mouth breathing Pat Robertson (et. al.) gang. All them "moralists" in the White House. Our own Stephen Harper and the dumb as a shrub Myron Thompson.

It's my understanding that Britain has an open policy on the subject regarding its armed forces and you have to admit, there have been no major problems there.

I wonder how true that is. My military man isn't homophobic at all. I was kind of surprised by it. I sort of warned him before taking him out to a bar we like in West Hollywood because a lot of the gay men there are pretty flamboyant, but he didn't care a bit. Oddly, it was my male nurse friend who turned out to be really uncomfortable, and who would expect a male nurse to be homophobic?

I was a Marine and to me I could care less what a persons sexual preference is. However I have been in an infantry unit and I know that there are plenty who just do not like gay people. It's a fact. The military is not politically correct not matter how much you try to make them. They are not liberals. With that said, not many liberal young men and women join the military. How can one compare a college campus for example to a battallion of Marines? The only thing in common is that they are about the same age.

Good Morning Pangloss

The Dont' Ask Don't Tell policy was instituted under the Clinton Administration and we can hardly call him a moralist eh?

I am surprised the number of people equate homosexuality in the male gender specific when there are so many excellent service people who are lesbians - and do a fabulous job. Perhaps women are more disguised in what is historically a male role - military service.

It was an insulting policy when it was put into force - and it remains even more stupid now. Anyone who serves his or her country should be free to live life as they desire.

It is such a blatant 'stick your head in the sand issue' - when there is more sexuality being shared in barrack life (both hetero and homo) than the administrators and generals will admit - knowing full well it goes on. Masturbation is a most frequent pastime among service people - while the generals practice mental masturbation.
