Israeli forces have boarded and seized a yacht trying to bring humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and detained the 12 pro-Palestinian activists it was carrying, including Greta Thunberg.

Israel described the Madleen as a “media provocation”, but whatever images the activists hoped to come out of their voyage it was probably not Thunberg being given food and water by an Israeli soldier.

It is an embarrassing end to a vanity mission for Thunberg, the climate change activist turned ego warrior who has adopted Palestine as her latest cause.
The Madleen is now on its way to Ashdod, a port city around 27km (17 miles) north of Gaza, according to Israeli media.
The yacht is carrying a small shipment of humanitarian aid, including rice and baby formula. The Foreign Ministry said it would be taken to Gaza. "The tiny amount of aid that was on the yacht and not consumed by the 'celebrities' will be transferred to Gaza through real
humanitarian channels," it wrote.

"The 'selfie yacht' of the 'celebrities' is safely making its way to the shores of Israel. The passengers are expected to return to their home countries," the ministry wrote on X.
All passengers were safe and unharmed, the ministry later added. "They were provided with sandwiches and water. The show is over."

"Connection has been lost" on the Madleen, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) campaign group said on the Telegram app. It posted a photo showing people in life jackets sitting with their hands up.
Israel says its blockade on Gaza is necessary to prevent weapons from reaching Hamas fighters in Gaza.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz ordered the military on Sunday to prevent the Madleen from reaching Gaza, calling the mission a propaganda effort in support of Hamas.

Katz said he had instructed that upon the boat's arrival at Ashdod port, the activists will be shown videos of atrocities committed during the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, which triggered
the Gaza war.
After reporting that the yacht had been boarded, the FFC posted short, pre-recorded videos of some of the activists, including Thunberg.

In the footage, activists say "if you see this video, we have been intercepted and kidnapped" by the Israeli military or forces supporting Israel, etc…

Hamas condemned the seizure of the boat as "state terrorism" and said it salutes its activists. The United Nations' special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has supported the FFC operation and on Sunday, urged other boats to challenge the Gaza blockade.

(Has anyone seen a single picture of this sailboat with, like sails, unfurled, sailing?)

While it’s amusing to see HMS TikTok provoke the IDF into nothing more drastic than snack distribution and a free trip to Tel Aviv, no one should doubt the dangerous folly of Thunberg and her companions.
However strongly they might feel about the current conflict in Gaza, attempting to
break the maritime embargo was foolhardy. For one, that embargo is a lawful security measure which is in place for a reason.
We know it’s lawful because in 2011 a UN Secretary-General’s Panel of Inquiry, the Palmer Report, concluded that it was “a legitimate security measure in order to prevent weapons from entering Gaza by sea” and Israel’s implementation of the blockade “complied with the requirements of international law”. Israel imposed its blockade on Gaza, with Egypt’s help, after Hamas, the Islamic militant group, took over the coastal strip in 2007.
