1699448187365.jpegThe political justifications for the exemption were obvious. Atlantic Canada only became subject to federal carbon pricing on July 1. Amid the noticeable spike in fuel prices that followed, Liberal support plummeted across the region — leading to a chorus of Liberal MPs warning that if something wasn’t done the party would soon be unelectable.

Ottawa’s decision to zero in on home heating oil ensured a policy that would disproportionately benefit Atlantic Canadians while leaving most of the rest of the country paying full freight. A mere three per cent of Canadians use heating oil, and almost all of those users live east of the Quebec border. In Nova Scotia, nearly a third of homes use oil.

The carve-out threw an even bigger wrench into the Liberals’ longstanding argument that any disparities caused by the tax could be fixed via targeted rebates.

When bombs start dropping on Lebanon and Iran, oil is going to go through the roof.

yeah, and pretty much why Churchill said democracy is the worst form of government (except for all the others).

elections get bought with the largesse of future generations.
This is the one that worries me the most. If I was young, I would be even more pissed off than I already am about the fiscal mismanagement this country. I would be calling for public execution of politicians.
oh wait, I have already done that. Maybe it is time for action, not words.

Liberal government set to miss 2030 emissions targets, says environment commissioner audit

'We found that the measures most critical for reducing emissions had not been identified or prioritized'

Peter Zimonjic - CBC News

The federal government is set to miss its 2030 target to cut carbon emissions by at least 40 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, according to the latest audit from the commissioner of the environment's office.

The commissioner's fall reports looked at five key areas: the government's fleet of zero-emissions vehicles, construction of charging stations, monitoring the catch of marine fisheries, the status of environmental petitions presented to Parliament and the government's progress on reducing emissions.

The report painted a grim picture of emission reductions in Canada over the past 20 years, saying that the only significant drops in emissions came during the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, which had little to do with emissions reduction policy.

"Canada is the only G7 country that has not achieved any emissions reductions since 1990," Jerry DeMarco, commissioner of the environment and sustainable development, told reporters Tuesday.

Under the terms of the Kyoto Protocol, which the House of Commons ratified in 2002, Canada committed to cutting total emissions to 5 per cent below 1990 levels. Shortly after coming into office in 2015, the Liberals agreed to adopt the Paris Accord targets.

Moves to abruptly adjourn debate during Thursday afternoon’s third reading of a contentious farm heating bill sparked uproar in the Senate, and puts the legislation on ice until later this month.

Bill C-234, a private member’s bill tabled in the House of Commons last February, would amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act to exempt carbon taxes from propane and natural gas used to heat or cool barns and livestock buildings, and dry grain — essentially extending carbon tax exemptions already available to farmers on gasoline and diesel.

Senators voted 42 to 28 on Tuesday to reject the report and move the bill to third reading. “The Prime Minister and entire Liberal Party is trying to take away the livelihood from Canadian farmers, it’s a simple as that,” he (Manitoba Senator Don Plett) said. “They have decided that the whole country is subject to what (Environment) Minister (Steven) Guilbeault wants.”

Bill C-234’s potential passage into law also comes when federal officials maintain no more exemptions would be permitted.

(Bill C-234 also known as An Act to amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act.[6]Lobb's Bill seeks to remove the carbon tax off propane and natural gas for agriculture functions such as heating livestock barns and drying grains)

“There will absolutely not be any other carve-outs or suspensions of the price on pollution,” the Prime Minister told reporters last week.

“Farmers have no viable fuel alternatives to which they can easily switch — they’re either unavailable, or cost prohibitive,” he said.

“Where it has been neither of those, farmers, ranchers and growers have switched, because it makes business sense to do so.”

The carbon tax, he said, simply takes money out of the pockets of farmers — particularly since natural gas and propane, so-called “transition fuels,” burn markedly cleaner than gasoline or diesel.

“The carbon tax is supposed to send a price signal to incentivize the transition to lower carbon emitting fuels,” Wells said.
“However, because of the absence of alternatives, this price signal does not work when it comes to propane and natural gas used for agricultural purposes.”

The election can’t come soon enough. If our rigged electoral system manages to produce another non coalition coalition, there will be a fence at the Manitoba border.
anyone from Toronto or Ottawa will require a visa to visit the land of the free, and will have to apply to the provinces for permission to move west. Which will require successful passing of an exam on western history and lifestyle.

Will there be a practical portion? Does one have to demonstrate competence at kicking cow-turds, guzzling cheap beer, and whining about how hard-done-by one is?

They were the Tie-Breaker…that’s all. The Bloc seeks to create the conditions necessary for the political secession of Quebecfrom Canada and campaigns actively only within the province during federal elections. The party has been described as social democratic[5] and separatist (or "sovereigntist").
That is the issue alright! I'm thinking that they SHOULD go because they're taking us all down with them!!

After Liberal Party support plummeted in Atlantic Canada owing largely to frustration over the tax, the Liberals slapped together a special exemption on home heating oil that applies almost solely to the East Coast — while informing everybody else they still have to pay full freight.

The rest of Canada (including many longtime defenders of the policy) are now openly wondering why we’re pricing carbon in the first place.

Kick em out.
Well….I don’t know. It’s a tough call, but a tough pill to swallow when Quebec preaches about fiscal responsibility, compared to the rest of Canada, when they are the deciding vote on the rest of Canada paying a tax they don’t pay…

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling for a "massive pressure campaign" to push the governing Liberals to help pass a piece of legislation that would remove the carbon tax from fuels used in some agricultural activities.

"My message to Canadians is: Call your Liberal MP, tell them to get Justin Trudeau out of the way," Poilievre said about the prime minister, during a news conference in Vancouver on Monday.
Poilievre was speaking in favour of a private member's bill put forward by Conservative MP Ben Lobb. Bill C-234 passed the House of Commons in March, mostly supported by opposition parties. It's now in the Senate, but procedural wrangling has delayed a vote on it until later this month.

The bill would remove the carbon tax on natural gas and propane used in such activities as irrigation, grain drying, feed preparation, and heating and cooling barns and greenhouses.

Poilievre pledged "to work with all Canadians over the next weeks to mount a massive pressure campaign, just as we did on home heat, to take this tax off."

The proposed legislation comes as the government deals with the fallout of its decision last month to pause the carbon tax on home heating oil. The federal Conservatives and some premiers have pushed for that exemption to be expanded beyond oil, to all fuels used for home heating.
Trudeau has firmly closed the door on any further exemptions.

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault has similarly drawn a line in the sand on new carve-outs. "As long as I'm the environment minister, there will be no more exemptions to carbon pricing," he told The Canadian Press last week.

I would much prefer the government hold the line. This would piss off so many people, they would be lucky to have party status after the next election. If they cave now, come election time they will claim they listened to the people and the gullible in the east would believe them and probably vote liberal again.

Excellent notion! Two can play at the exclusion game!

Pete and the Cons should immediately propose exemptions to the carbon tax that leaves only Liberals, NDPers, Greens, Kay-beckers, and Yank tourists paying it!

National Unity. . . achieved.

Muzzies are already covered by the camel fart tax. And the flying carpet parking tax. Although you don't see many flying carpets anymore since jet airplanes were introduced.
