U.S. President Joe Biden mangled LL Cool J’s name and called the rapper-actor “boy” in a speech at the Congressional Black Caucus Phoenix Awards.
LL Cool J and fellow rapper MC Lyte were recognized for their musical contributions at the ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.
While on stage, Biden said: “Two of the great artists of our time — representing the groundbreaking legacy of hip hop in America — LL Jay Cool J, uhhh…” he stuttered, before appearing to squint at the teleprompter as the audience laughed.
Biden then added: “Uh, by the way, that boy — that man’s got biceps bigger than my thighs.”
Social media video of his speech quickly went viral after it was shared on X by right-wing account RNC Research. While some defended the 80-year-old, others went off.
“Ohhh God, make it stop PLLEASE. He’s making a total mockery of this country,” said one poster.
Many commented that it was “the truth” and “a rare moment of clarity” coming out, implying that the president is racist.
“It’s the 101st time he’s referred to black people by racial slurs of the past,” one person claimed.
Earlier this year, Biden was criticized after referring to Wes Moore, Maryland’s first black governor, as a “boy,” — and like he did with LL Cool J — commented on Moore’s muscles.
“You got a hell of a new governor in Wes Moore, I tell ya,” Biden told members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in February.
“He’s the real deal, and the boy looked like he could still play,” he said. “He’s got some guns on him.”
In 2019, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker issued a statement saying that Biden’s use of the word “boy” is inappropriate.
“You don’t joke about calling Black men ‘boys,’” Booker said at the time.
He later added that he and Biden had a “constructive conversation” and cleared the air about the damaging term.

A uniformed division officer was bitten by the dog around 8 p.m. Monday at the White House, and was treated on-site by medical personnel, said USSS chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi. The officer is doing just fine, he said.
Elizabeth Alexander, communications director for first lady Jill Biden, said “the White House can be a stressful environment for family pets, and the first family continues to work on ways to help Commander handle the often unpredictable nature of the White House grounds.”
She said the Bidens are “incredibly grateful to the Secret Service and Executive Residence staff for all they do to keep them, their family, and the country safe.”
The German Shepherd purebred has bit or otherwise attacked Secret Service personnel at least 10 other times between October 2022 and January, including one incident that required a hospital visit by the injured law enforcement officer, according to records from the Department of Homeland Security.
Commander is the second dog of Biden’s to behave aggressively, including biting Secret Service personnel and White House staff. They eventually sent the first dog, a German shepherd named Major, to live with friends in Delaware after those incidents.
The Secret Service provides security protection for the president and his family, and scores of its officers are posted around the executive mansion and its sprawling grounds.
Biden received Commander in December 2021 as a gift from his brother James. The family also has a cat, Willow.

The president was coming down the aircraft’s short set of stairs on Tuesday in Michigan to meet with striking autoworkers.
He was near the bottom when his heel appeared to slip or stick, causing him to stumble ever-so-slightly before he caught himself, and continued down to the ground.
The news website Axios’ reported on Biden has adopted measures of a “don’t-trip strategy” which appear to be working because any other time, the POTUS likely would have taken a tumble.
Biden is known to be prone to stumbles and his team is determined to protect the president from taking yet another public spill, given that recent polling shows an increasing number of Americans consider him too old to serve a second term in office.
Biden has been working with a physical therapist to improve his balance, opts for better, more forgiving footwear — like sneakers — and uses a short flight of stairs to board Air Force One, the outlet reported.
The near-stumble on the lower stairs of the presidential plane may have been mitigated by the boots he appeared to be wearing, and not dress shoes with slippery soles.
Biden has tripped and/or fell multiple times during his nearly three years in office, including while boarding Air Force One, tumbling over a sandbag at the Air Force Academy, and taking a spill off his bike while on a beach ride in Delaware.
White House spokesman Andrew Bates dismissed Axios’ report as fitting “an unfortunate pattern of media attempting to sensationalize something that has long been public.”
He added: “This isn’t new, it was proactively and transparently disclosed.”
However, Biden’s verbal blunders are a whole other issue, including his rambling speech in Vietnam and mangling LL Cool J’s name and referring to him as a “boy.”

WASHINGTON — House Republicans launched a formal impeachment hearing Thursday against President Joe Biden, saying they intend to “provide accountability” as they make their case to the public, their colleagues and skeptics in the Senate.
The chairmen of the Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means committees used the opening hearing of their impeachment inquiry to review the constitutional and legal questions involved. They are trying to show what they say are links to Biden’s son Hunter’s overseas businesses, though key witnesses said they do not yet see hard evidence of impeachable offenses.
Rep. James Comer, R-Ky, the Oversight chairman, said the lawmakers have “a mountain of evidence” that will show that the elder Biden “abused his public office for his family’s financial gain.”
Comer said the panel will continue to “follow the money and the evidence to provide accountability” to the American people.
It’s a high-stakes opening act for Republicans, coming in the midst of a potential federal government shutdown, as they begin a process that can lead to the ultimate penalty for a president, punishment for what the Constitution describes as “high crimes and misdemeanors.”
The hearing comes as House Republicans face scattered reluctance from their own ranks to an impeachment inquiry and deep resistance in the Senate from Republicans who worry about political ramifications and say Biden’s conviction and removal from office is a near impossibility.
As the hearing began, Democrats displayed a screen showing the days, hours and minutes left until the government shuts down as Congress struggles to fund the government before Saturday’s deadline.
“We’re 62 hours away from shutting down the government of the United States of America and Republicans are launching an impeachment drive, based on a long debunked and discredited lie,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the Oversight panel.
Raskin questioned the legitimacy of the hearing since the House has not voted to formally launch the impeachment inquiry. He said Republicans are rehashing five-year-old allegations raised by Donald Trump, who is Biden’s chief rival in 2024, during the former president’s 2019 impeachment over Ukraine.
“They don’t have a shred of evidence against President Biden for an impeachable offense,” he said.
The hearing Thursday is not featuring witnesses with information about the Bidens or Hunter Biden’s business work. Instead, the panel heard from outside experts in tax law, criminal investigations and constitutional legal theory.
A top Republican-called witness, Jonathan Turley, a George Washington University law professor who is an expert in impeachment issues, said he believed the House had passed the threshold for an inquiry but that the current evidence was not enough for charges.
“I do not believe that the current evidence would support articles of impeachment,” Turley said.
Democrats, who decry the investigation as a political ploy aimed at hurting Biden and helping Trump as he runs again for president, brought in Michael Gerhardt, a law professor who has also appeared as an expert in previous impeachment proceedings.
In detailing the reasons Republicans say they have to impeach Biden, Gerhardt concluded: “If that’s what exists, as a basis for this inquiry, it is not sufficient. I say that with all respect.”
Gerhardt said, “A fishing expedition is not a legitimate purpose.”
Still, questions remain as Republicans dig into the Biden family finances and Hunter Biden, who has acknowledged being a drug user during much of the time under scrutiny.
Republicans have been investigating Hunter Biden for years, since his father was vice president. And while there have been questions raised about the ethics around the family’s international business, none of the evidence so far has proven that the president, in his current or previous office, abused his role, accepted bribes or both.
One former business partner of Hunter Biden has told House investigators the son was selling the “illusion of access” to his father.
Turley told the lawmakers the question remains, “Was the president involved?”
In the run-up to the hearing, Republicans unveiled a tranche of new documents and bank records that detail wire transfers from a Chinese businessman to Hunter Biden in 2019. Hunter Biden had listed his father’s address on the wire transfer form, which Republicans say provided a clear link to the president.
Abbe Lowell, an attorney for Hunter Biden, said the address on the wire transfer, which he says was a loan, was listed to the president’s Delaware home because it was the address on Hunter Biden’s driver’s license and “his only permanent address at the time.”
“Once again Rep. Comer peddles lies to support a premise — some wrongdoing by Hunter Biden or his family — that evaporates in thin air the moment facts come out,” Lowell said in a statement.
The White House issued a statement saying nothing can distract from the Republicans’ inability to govern ahead of a shutdown.
House Republicans are also looking into the Justice Department investigation into Hunter Biden’s taxes and gun use that began in 2018. Two IRS whistleblowers came forward to Congress in the spring with claims that department officials thwarted their efforts to fully investigate Hunter Biden and that they faced retaliation when they pushed back.
The claims have since been disputed by the Department of Justice, the IRS and FBI agents who worked on the case.
“The Biden Justice Department protected the Biden family brand.” said Rep. Jason Smith, a Missouri Republican and Ways and Means chairman.
What Smith did not mention was that the discussions occurred during the Trump Justice Department and were likely in keeping with the agency’s practice of avoiding overt investigative steps concerning political candidates in the immediate run-up to an election.
But Republicans have pointed to a failed plea deal over the summer as proof that Hunter Biden received preferential treatment because of who his father was.
“They tried to put together this sweetheart deal,” said Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, the Judiciary chairman.
The impeachment inquiry hearing is taking place as the federal government is days away from what is likely to be a damaging government shutdown that would halt paychecks for millions of federal workers and the military and disrupt services for millions of Americans.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced the impeachment inquiry this month egged on by Trump and with mounting pressure from his right flank to take action against Biden or risk being ousted from his leadership job.
Trump is the only president to be twice impeached, first over accusations he pressured Ukraine to dig up dirt on Biden and later over accusations that he incited the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol. He was acquitted in both cases by the Senate.
The hearing Thursday is expected to be the first of many as House Republicans explore how this inquiry will end and whether or not they will pursue articles of impeachment against the president.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden’s dog, Commander, is “not presently on the White House campus” following a series of biting incidents involving White House staff and U.S. Secret Service officers, a spokesperson for first lady Jill Biden said late Wednesday.

Former ESPN host Sage Steele spilled the tea on what interviewing U.S. President Joe Biden was really like.
Steele was a guest on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast where she described interviewing Biden as “the saddest thing” because he “couldn’t finish his sentences” and seemed confused.
“He struggled,” Steele revealed of the now-80-year-old, explaining he “trailed off” on topics during the March 2021 interview.
“Honestly, I don’t like him,” Steele began (at the 32:56 mark). “I think he’s a terrible president. However, forget that.”
She continued: “The human aspect of what we’re witnessing right now with him, to me, is heartbreaking. And it’s inexcusable by the family when you knew during the election.”
Biden has had more than his share of public blunders, which have many questioning if he is in the right frame of mind to run for re-election.
Steele explained that her interview with Biden was for a prerecorded segment ahead of MLB’s opening day that year and was done via satellite.
She noted that she had to stall Biden as they waited for technical issues to be resolved.
“So I had to, like, BS. I had to chitchat, waiting for us to start rolling.”
Steele recounted that she could not see the president as his staffers kept a lens cover over the camera but there was sound.
“So I can hear him and he goes, ‘What is this for?’… And he’s, like, ‘Who am I talking to? Wait — what’s her name?’
“I was going, ‘Oh my God!’ And then (an aide) said, ‘SportsCenter, ESPN.’ And he goes, ‘Oh, okay.’”
At that point, the President started to tell Steele about his own football greatness and how he had “the best hands,” to which the host did not know how to respond.
Instead, she said, “‘Oh, so you were a receiver,” to which he started to elaborate.
“And here’s the saddest thing — his voice just trailed off. He said, ‘I was good,’ and then he went silent, and he goes, ‘Uh … never mind.’”
While Maher laughed, Steele was a little more sympathetic.
“I thought it was so sad because I realized that’s why he was in his basement during the whole election cycle. Because even then, he couldn’t finish his sentences. He struggled.”
She added: “So forget about politics, I don’t care, I didn’t vote for him. However, that made me sad.”
Steele’s podcast appearance came mere days after Maher pleaded with Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race because he is the “only Democrat who can lose to Trump,” despite the men only having a four-year age difference.
Steele clarified that while she thinks Biden is a terrible president, she doesn’t love Trump either.
“There’s a big difference in voting for someone and loving them because, by the way, I don’t love any politician,” she explained. “There’s always a screw loose with all of them because who would want to do that?”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has been interviewed as part of an independent investigation into his handling of classified documents, the White House said late Monday. It’s a possible sign that the investigation is nearing its end.
Special counsel Robert Hur is examining the improper retention of classified documents by Biden from his time as a U.S. senator and as vice president that were found at his Delaware home, as well as at a private office that he used in between his service in the Obama administration and becoming president.
Biden has said he was unaware he had the documents and that ” there’s no there there. ”
Ian Sams, a spokesperson for the White House counsel’s office, said in a statement that the interview was voluntary and conducted at the White House on Sunday and Monday.
It’s not clear when Hur’s team approached Biden’s lawyers about an interview or how long they’d been negotiating. Asked on Aug. 25 if he planned to sit for an interview with the special counsel, Biden replied, “There’s no such request and no such interest.”
The interview could signal that the special counsel investigation is nearing its conclusion.
In 2016, then-FBI Director James Comey announced his recommendation against criminal charges for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. the Democratic presidential nominee, over her handling of classified information just three days after agents interviewed her at FBI headquarters.
Investigators with Hur’s office have already cast a broad net in the Biden probe, interviewing a wide range of witnesses about their knowledge of the handling of classified documents.
In his statement, Sams reiterated that Biden and the White House were cooperating. He referred any questions to the Justice Department.
“As we have said from the beginning, the President and the White House are cooperating with this investigation, and as it has been appropriate, we have provided relevant updates publicly, being as transparent as we can consistent with protecting and preserving the integrity of the investigation,” Sams said. “We would refer other questions to the Justice Department at this time.”
Attorney General Merrick Garland in January 2023 named Hur, a former U.S. attorney for Maryland, to handle the politically sensitive Justice Department inquiry in an attempt to avoid conflicts of interest.
It is one of three recent Justice Department investigations into the handling of classified documents by politically prominent figures.
The investigation into Biden is separate from special counsel Jack Smith’s probe into the handling of classified documents by former President Donald Trump after he left the White House. Smith’s team has charged Trump with illegally retaining top secret records at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida and then obstructing government efforts to get them back. Trump has said he did nothing wrong.
No evidence has emerged to suggest that Biden engaged in comparable conduct or willfully held onto records he wasn’t supposed to have.
Questioned in January about the discovery, Biden told reporters that the documents were immediately turned over to the National Archives and the Justice Department. He said he was cooperating fully with the investigation and was “looking forward to getting this resolved quickly.”
“I think you’re going to find there’s nothing there,” he said. “There’s no there there.”
In June, the Justice Department informed former Vice President Mike Pence’s legal team that it would not pursue criminal charges against him related to the discovery of classified documents at his Indiana home. The news came as Pence finalized plans to launch his campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
About a dozen documents with classified markings were discovered at Pence’s home in January after he asked his lawyers to search his vice presidential belongings “out of an abundance of caution” after the Biden discovery. The items had been “inadvertently boxed and transported” to Pence’s home at the end of the last administration, Pence’s lawyer, Greg Jacob, wrote in a letter to the National Archives.
The FBI then discovered an additional document with classified markings at the Indiana house during its own search the following month.
Pence repeatedly had said he was unaware of the documents’ existence, but that “mistakes were made” in his handling of classified material.
It is hardly unprecedented for sitting presidents to be interviewed in criminal investigations.
President George W. Bush sat for a 70-minute interview as part of an investigation into the leak of the identify of a CIA operative. President Bill Clinton in 1998 underwent more than four hours of questioning from independent counsel Kenneth Starr before a federal grand jury.
