'Grand finale': Protestors plan to block a major Vancouver intersection today

A group of demonstrators calling on the B.C. government to take urgent action on the climate emergency will hold its "grand finale" by blocking one of Vancouver's main arteries heading into Halloween weekend.

Extinction Rebellion's Vancouver chapter plans to block a major intersection on Friday (Oct. 29) evening on the final day of its two-week demonstration in the city.

Extinction Rebellion member and President of Unifor Local 950 Brent Eichler tells Vancouver Is Awesome that the intersection is still undetermined. "A snake march is a route that moves randomly through the streets but at the end, we will block an intersection."

Eicher adds, however, that the intersection will be the "most disruptive that we can find."

The group will meet at Nelson Park at 4:30 p.m. before marching through downtown. The activists plan to "lock themselves to a structure, risking arrest" for their grand finale of the October Rebellion.

Protestors plan to block multiple major Vancouver bridges, intersections and highways

The group also plans to "shut down YVR airport."

A group of demonstrators calling on the B.C. government to take urgent action on the climate emergency plans to block multiple major bridges, intersections and highways over a two-week period.

Extinction Rebellion's Vancouver chapter says it demands "commitment from the provincial and federal governments to end fossil fuel subsidies before COP 26, in Glasgow," explains a news release. If no action is taken, the group will move forward with several nonviolent climate change protests that will include an attempt to shut down Vancouver International Airport.

Janice Oakley, a local Extinction Rebellion organizer, says: “This is the fight of our lives. By engaging in civil disobedience in the streets, we are confronting the criminality of the federal and provincial governments and our inability so far to act proportionately by rebelling. This is why I will rebel.”

The group highlights that the government spends billions on fossil fuel subsidies despite the alarming advice from the scientific community on climate change. This behaviour ultimately condemns humanity to "social collapse."

Zain Haq, another organizer, adds, “If the elected officials in power refuse to do whatever is necessary to avoid social collapse, they are committing treason, and we will exercise our legal and moral obligation to nonviolently bring this government down."

Group outlines full plan and dates for Vancouver traffic disruptions

The group will commence its two-week demonstration by blocking the intersection of Burrard and Georgia streets on Saturday, Oct. 16. First, the protestors will gather in Nelson Park at noon before walking to the final destination.

On Oct. 17, the group will gather in Grandview Park at noon for action on Commercial Drive. On Oct. 18, they plan to gather at Nelson Park and then block the intersection of Granville and Georgia starting at 4:30 p.m. They will block the same intersection on Oct. 19, too.

On Oct 20, they plan to block the Burrard Street Bridge at 4:30 p.m. after they gather in Nelson Park.

They plan to block the intersection of Georgia and Cambie on Oct. 21 starting at 4:30 p.m. after gathering in Nelson Park. They will block the Cambie Street Bridge the following day, on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23. They will gather in Coopers' Park.

On Oct. 24, they plan to block Grandview Highway after gathering in Falaise Park. The following day they are planning a disruption at the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on Oct. 25.

On Oct. 26 and Oct. 27. they are planning a disruption at the University of British Columbia. On the following day, Oct. 28, they will march throughout downtown Vancouver after meeting in Nelson Park.

Finally, on Oct. 29, they plan to block the intersection of Main and Broadway after meeting in Nelson Park.
More people taking in the "cool aide" of Climate Change! Boy, it's amazing that they are willing to be screwed big time and when they find out that all the money is going to the super wealthy & they become super poor it'll be too late. It's incredible at how well this farce has gotten & how well-planned it was. Just think - all they did was this: every time there was a hurricane, tornado or wild fire - simply tell everyone that it's because of Climate Change. If repeated consistently, people will believe it - and they do! It's a money maker for sure!!! What could go wrong when people buy into it without thinking things through. But hey, they want to re-write history so apparently dinosaurs didn't exist either.

Unfortunately, the REAL Climatologists who disagree have been silenced and those who claim that Climate Crisis is real refuse to debate the issue because they really don't know what they're talking about - it's all for the money.

The fact is that Climate has always changed and always will. We can throw all kinds of money at it but the fact is that the money isn't going towards anything to do with Climate - it's all going into the pockets of those like George Soros & his ilk. Governments also taking in a crap load of money to spend on things regular folks have no interest in pursuing like biased training, CRT, etc., etc. Brainwashing 2021!!!

So this was last night. Which intersection did the block?
The five arrests came after three people locked themselves into a concrete structure in the middle of an intersection near the downtown entrance to the Burrard Street Bridge, and two others were for other related conduct.

Those who locked-down attached themselves to a specially-constructed concrete block that allows activists to release themselves as they choose but is impossible for anyone else – such as law enforcement – to detach them unless they destroy the structure.

“The activists released themselves after three hours, and were promptly arrested,” reads a statement from Extinction Rebellion.

According to the Vancouver Police Department, the activists freed themselves after Vancouver Fire Rescue Services came to the scene to cut them out of the structure.

Vancouver Police Department’s Sgt. Steve Addison alleges the other two people were arrested after laying down in the road, and that all of them were taken to jail. But Extinction Rebellion’s communications coordinator Sara Hall says only one person laid down on the road, and that the other was directing traffic around the blockade – and was released on-site.

“One (person), who was directing traffic, was arrested unlawfully and quickly released. The other was arrested for lying down in the intersection in solidarity and refusing to leave,” reads the Extinction Rebellion press release sent by Hall.

The protest group says those who were arrested were treated roughly by police.

I was thinking the same thing!!! Just replace the words “Climate Change” or “Climate Crisis” with “Gods” or “The Gods” & rhetoric makes me thing of the Olmec or Mayan cultures in their hay day.

Instead of demanding Virgins into Volcanoes though, it’s demanding we empty our pockets while destroying our livelihoods & our ability to survive in our modern society…..into wealth transfer schemes where the wealthy & powerful can exert control over the masses while taking a skim of the tribute to The Gods…I mean Climate Crisis.

Anyway, on the subject of the wealthy & powerful gathering to work how to further exert control over the masses, we’re having COP26 starting today.

Do we have the technology to teleconference into some boondoggle like this (?) or do the hypocrites & the Woke need to fly into this Selfie-Stick Circle-Jerk to remain relevant to “THEIR” Peers in this Climate Ponzi Scheme where the Elite meet to drop decrees on the rest of our pocketbooks??

Knowing we’re either still in (or just coming out of?) a decreed Global Pandemic, is their restraint on the size of the Canadian Delegation to COP26? Will the power elite ‘lead by example’ ??

Canada has taken steps to ensure diverse perspectives are reflected in international forums. Canada's delegation for COP26 will include representatives of federal opposition parties, representatives of provinces and territories, including Ministers of the Environment and Premiers, as well as National Indigenous Organizations and Representatives (NIORs). The delegation will also include youth, civil society, business, labour, and Canadian municipalities. The Canadian delegation will be posted on the UNFCCC's website in the near term…but not now as this this actually has started today?

Doubtful. Will the Canadian delegation have to fly into one of the four designated COVID Canadian International Airports like the rest of us peons (?) or directly into Ottawa when returning?

Trudeau is among 120 world leaders, along with U.S. President Joe Biden, attending the UN’s annual climate summit in Glasgow from Nov. 1-12, known as COP 26, meaning the 26th meeting of the Conference of the Parties. (The first was held in Berlin, Germany in 1995.)

But Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose country is the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter, responsible for 27% of global emissions and, as of 2019, more emissions than the entire developed world combined, will not attend, although he will follow the proceedings through video conferencing. So Xi Jinping can Teleconference into this but the other 20,000+ can’t???

Xi’s absence raises the issue of why the Glasgow summit couldn’t have been done through video conferencing, as opposed to the huge carbon footprint it will create in the middle of a global pandemic, with many countries discouraging non-essential travel.

Trudeau has pledged to reduce Canada’s emissions — 1.6% of the global total to net zero by 2050, through such measures as his national carbon tax and other green energy initiatives.

Ironically, while the UN conference will denounce the use of fossil fuels, many countries are scrambling to increase their supplies of coal, oil and natural gas as their economies begin to recover from the COVID-19 recession, because wind and solar power cannot provide base load power to the electricity grid on demand.

Now, on a purely selfish level, we live in a home of under 1000 sq.ft with a 95% efficient furnace (using Natural Gas), modern double pane gas charged windows, on an urban lot 25’x125’. We have a few trees, garden plots & flower beds, and a small 20’x22’ lawn, and have a very well insulated house and double car garage, and currently my commute to work (in a private vehicle) is about (traffic and construction permitting) about 5 minutes each way. We’re doing our part to live moderately in a climate similar to that of Siberia much of the time. How much more should we be punished for our opulent lifestyle?

Recently an infill house (two+ stories tall) has been built 1’ south of our property. How many solar panels do I need to install (being in the Northern Hemisphere) to feel woke & virtuous with no southern exposure to our home any longer? How many wind turbines should I erect on my 25’x125’ property for inconsistent energy supplemental power supply & how long will the cost/benefit time frame take (if ever) to offset this cost outlay? There’s not a whole lot more we can do personally at this point beyond switching to electric vehicles which come with their own inherent liabilities in this climate & location (Currently I believe there are about 600 fully electric vehicles in the province of Saskatchewan).

Do people not realize that there isn't "diverse perspectives" from those attending? That they're all "for robbing us" of any wealth we may have; robbing us of our ability to decide what's best for ourselves & our families? There is no "diverse perspective" going to these stupid meetings - it's all about how they can scam us of whatever it is we have and how best to line their own pockets. Climate has always and will always change - period. No amount of robbing us of our wealth will change that.

Why would anyone attend a so-called "conference" if they DISAGREED with what the conference was all about? If an alternate opinion is expressed, they wouldn't be allowed to even attend this conference and would be vilified by all who did attend and do believe that they should have control over what everyone else does.

What the hell is "cancel culture" all about if it's not to suppress beliefs and/or opinions of those who disagree? To say that "diverse perspectives" are being allowed is blatantly false and "misinformation".
