I haven’t seen any mention of also cancelling Canada Day here to go along with this new holiday yet. That call is coming….& at a minimum changing Canada Day to an Aboriginal Day of Mourning if not outright canceling it….
What an uplifting and cheery thought 'Aboriginal Day of Mourning'/s. Can't say as it would surprise me a bit, Ron though I am quite sure there are many bands in Canada who would not for a minute agree with the idea considering that they are long past always looking backward and much more focused on keeping their businesses and communities thriving. Too bad we don't hear from them more often - it always the ever eagerly offended that get the sound bites. Pity that.

I think that's a bit extreme.

There won't be a 'cancelling' of Canada day. Although if that did happen (big if), it'd be stupid for whatever party in charge suggested it, and too many Canadians would stand up and tell them to STFU (this Canadian included).

A National day of mourning for what Indigenous peoples have gone through, yeah.

Cancel Canada Day? Uh huh, sure.

Why mourning? There are many things to celebrate about aboriginals and their achievements. Why so darn negative? How about a National Day of Celebration for Aboriginals? Way too many people are stuck in looking backward and that has accomplished absolutely nothing. Not for FNs and not for Canadians.

I wouldn't count anything out with the destructive clown show that's in charge of things now. We're already seeing the cancellation of the founding members of the country, statues being ripped down, schools renamed....etc. We have a leader that has done everything he can to weaken the unity of our country, de-legitimize our sovereignty, cheer and admire socialist/communist leadership, and create division within the different regions of Canada. This idea of cancelling Canada Day may seem "a bit extreme" right now, but give it a year or two and it will become a mainstream idea with progressive ideologues. It's a pattern we've already seen the last few years, nothing would surprise me anymore.

Kind'a funny how we have a Black History Month, Asian Heritage Month, and even Pride has turned into a month-long affair. And yet it takes the uncovering of a tragedy for Socks McGroper to dream up a nice virtue signal-y, White-guilt ridden holiday, for one day. I like the idea of a First Nations Appreciation Month and have for a some time.
They've even contributed to a global "phenomenon" of sorts; the kayak. When it comes to watercraft, the kayak outsells every other form of personal watercraft by a rather significant margin. It's a brilliant piece of engineering. Many of them willingly volunteered to go fight a couple of fascist dickheads in WW2 only to come back home to the dickheads in our own govt.

This govt yaps on about inclusiveness but always seems to leave the FN out of their equation. Unless of course it's yet another opportunity for the Quebec nationalist to trash Canada.

First Nations Appreciation Month. You know, Jin. I like it. The media could use the month to publish in-depth articles and send reporters to visit the communities and interview the people from the many bands in Canada who have fought adversity and found a way forward. There are most certainly enough of them to fill the entire month. It is long past time that these FNs be celebrated and Canadians come to know another side of the Aboriginal story.

Whoops................got side-tracked. Sorry.
If half that number of Canadians get on titter and vote to cancel Canada Day then have at 'er - this is still a democracy, if barely and the majority does rule. Somehow though I just can't see that many of my fellow Canadians willing to jump on this bandwagon when there are many other ways to celebrate First Nations.

I keep waiting for the pendulum to reach the point of amplitude and begin the journey to equilibrium. Somehow I doubt I will see that in my lifetime.

TBH, I think a "First Nations Appreciation Month" would be a good/great idea.

OTTAWA -- There are renewed calls to cancel the Canada Day holiday this year, as Canadians grapple with the recent discovery of an unmarked burial site at a former residential school in B.C. The hashtag #CancelCanadaDay is gaining traction on social media with many arguing it should be a day to reflect on the injustices inflicted on Indigenous Peoples, including the lives lost at residential schools, etc...
This year Canada needs to lie down on Canada Day and let the Indigenous community mourn. Our ceremonies need to happen on Canada Day. Our healing dances need to be put on. Our drums need to sing. For the 215 and for the so many more that are coming, because we know the floodgates have opened up and there are going to be so many more.
http://dailyhive.com/vancouver/cancel-canada-day With Canada Day being less than four weeks away, there will likely be news on what the Canadian government plans to do sooner than later.
Canada Day is a contentious holiday. It serves as a stark reminder of the day that our land was not taken away, but stolen. It also reminds Indigenous people of colonization and the assimilationist policies that have been put into place to effectively eradicate us as a people.
http://www.narcity.com/cancel-canada-day-is-trending--there-are-protests-planned-for-july-1 Since Sunday evening, the hashtag #CancelCanadaDay has been trending on Twitter, with many people calling for celebrations on July 1 to be cancelled in favour of a day of reflection.
