We have two, the XXV Amendment and impeachment. They don't work when the allegedly sane officials who operate them are cowards.

I include the Democrats in the House of Representatives in that definition. The leading charge in their articles of impeachment was "abuse of power," which is neither a high crime nor a misdemeanor, and therefore not impeachable. They didn't have the backbone to call bribery bribery.

Of course not , they know if that road was taken the next Democrat President will suffer the same fate . What is good for the goose is good for the gander .

From my very limited knowledge, I understand that "impeachment" merely means "challenged" and it seems one can be impeached, yet in some cases able to carry on as before, Bill Clinton for one example. It doesn't seem that any penalty is automatically tied to a successful impeachment. Please advise me if I'm wrong.

Technically correct. Impeachment of the president by the House of Representatives is the equivalent of laying charges. It then goes to the Senate to try the president on the articles of impeachment. If convicted, he's out of office (that's never happened). If acquitted, the issue's deader'n four o'clock, and we press on.

The whole process has come to be (inaccurately) called "impeachment."
