And the highest populations are not centered in the largest cities that have different needs and concerns than rural areas? Who would the POTUS/PM pander too knowing where the bulk of their votes are coming from?
What "highest population?" The population of the U.S. is about 327 million. That's the population. There is no other population.

The biggest problem with it that I can see is it CAN favour small pockets of large populations concentrated in densely populated areas, but doesn't represent a fair share of the land area.

Take it up with author at CNN, the people elect Gov. the Corps. try to influence policy, don't like it elect a different Gov.

Precisely. I don't think they should be. I think that a national office should be elected by the nation, not by the states.
I freely acknowledge that under the Constitution as it currently stands, that is not how it is. I just think it should be.
Here's one for you: are you aware that there is currently no requirement whatever that the states hold elections at all? If the state legislature wants to simply appoint the electors, it can do so. U.S. Const., Art. II, sec. 1, cl. 3.
That doesn't square with my notions of democracy.
