Pelosi has been critical of President Trump's decision to withdraw U.S. forces from northern Syria, leaving Kurdish allies without American support to counter the Turkish military.

Pelosi's trip to Afghanistan was her first since she was elected speaker in January. She had planned to lead a delegation then, but that trip was abandoned in a fight with Trump over the timing of his State of the Union address during a government shutdown.
