Only one in four women believe Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau when he declares that he is a feminist. That is one of the shocking results from the latest DART & Maru/Blue Voice Canada Poll.
Trudeau’s self-declared feminism has been one of his biggest selling points and won him international accolades.
He’s been fetted for his proclamations on supporting feminism at the United Nations and at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Yet here at home, Canadian women aren’t so sure.
Just 24% say they believe that Trudeau is a feminist while 38% say no and 37% don’t know or aren’t sure. Women with the highest education and highest household income were most likely to agree that Trudeau is a feminist.
Pollster John Wright noted that there was very little difference across age brackets when it came to those who believe Trudeau’s claim to be a feminist but that that wasn’t the case with those who say they don’t believe him.
“Age makes a difference among women in this category: Almost half (45%) of women aged 55+ say they don’t believe the prime minister compared with those who are middle-aged (35-54 40%) and younger (18-34 29%.)” Wright said in an e-mail.
The poll of 753 women was conducted as part of a larger survey on Sept. 18 before the blackface scandal rocked the federal election.
The poll also asked women specifically how they feel about the job the government is doing and whether they feel they are better off than they were in 2015.
The results should worry the Liberals who need to capture the plurality of women voters, as they did in 2015, if they want to retain power.
When asked if they are better off than they were four years ago, when Trudeau’s Liberals came to power, 63% said no, including 23% who feel they are not at all better off.
“Given the Liberal mantra of bettering the lot of those in the middle class, it’s perhaps passing ironic that women most likely to say they’re better off now than in 2015 are those in the highest income earning spots ($100,000 + 46%) compared with middle ($50,000-$99,000 38%) and lower income ($50,000 and less 36%) earners,” Wright said.

The only upside for the Liberals is that despite a strong majority saying they are not better off personally, 54% say that the Trudeau government has done a good job of creating better opportunities for women.
The poll of randomly selected Canadian adult women who are members of Maru/Blue’s online panel is accurate to within 4.1%, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadian adults been polled.

The spread between Justin Trudeau’s Liberals and Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives is widening — and in the wrong direction if you are a Liberal.
The latest poll conducted for the Toronto Sun by the DART & Maru/Blue Voice Canada Poll shows the Conservatives up a touch, the Liberals down slightly and the other parties holding steady compared to the last poll taken as the election started.
The last poll for the Sun by DART was conducted on Sept. 11, the day the election was called, and had the Conservatives leading with 35% support nationally to 32% for the Liberals. In a poll conducted by DART this past Friday, the Conservatives were up to 37% nationally while the Liberals were down to 30% support.
The NDP currently sits at 15%, the Greens at 8%, the People’s Party at 8% and the Bloc Quebecois has actually moved up a bit in Quebec to 26%.
“The Conservatives are now leading in Ontario and that is the gateway to either a minority or majority government,” said pollster John Wright.
There was a big swing noted in Ontario as the Conservatives moved up three points to 37% support while the Liberals dropped six points to 34%. The NDP also moved up two points to 18% support in Ontario.
Despite this movement, Wright doesn’t think this is due to Trudeau’s blackface incidents.
“Like the release of the ethics report that had little impact, the blackface episode has done the same and in fact appears to have even earned the PM some sympathy because it happened long ago,” Wright added. “But that has not stopped the real trench warfare where votes are gained street by street, vote by vote.”

While the Conservatives have been quick to call out the Liberals over Trudeau’s blackface appearances, they have not stopped campaigning on issues related to affordability and putting more money in voters’ pockets. That might be why the Liberals have recently changed tactics and begun focusing on similar issues.
The Liberals hold the lead in Atlantic Canada and Quebec, though the lead in Atlantic Canada has shrunk to a virtual tie with the Conservatives. The Greens have also surged on the East Coast, now sitting at 17% support.
The Conservatives lead in every region from Ontario to the West Coast although British Columbia remains a tight race between the Conservatives and Liberals with the NDP not far behind.

Canadians are willing to cut Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau some slack over his blackface photos and video even though nearly half of the country thinks he is showing himself to be a hypocrite.
A poll conducted for the Toronto Sun by DART Maru/Blue Voice Canada Poll on Sept. 20 — less than 48 hours after the story broke — found that an astonishing 90% of Canadians were aware of the story.
Pollster John Wright said that even though it is rare to get 90% of the public aware of an issue, he’s not surprised.
“I’ve seen it at 78% in the past for other national issues, but this is the most intense run of an issue with all media firing at once,” Wright said. “It was wall to wall, massive front pages, inside spreads, talk shows, social media — everything. I’m not surprised.”
What may be surprising to some is that voters aren’t riled up about this issue.
Of the 90% who were aware of the blackface incidents, 76% agree with the statement that “Justin Trudeau may play the political game, but he has not shown himself to be a racist in any act of office.”
Also of benefit to the Liberal leader, who has been hounded by questions about this issue, is the finding that 66% agree with the statement that “people should cut Justin Trudeau some slack or give him a break because these things happened many years ago.”
The most damning finding for Trudeau in a poll that will most likely have his campaign team breathing a sigh of relief is that 45% agree with the statement that “Trudeau is a hypocrite and deserves this political comeuppance — finally he is getting a taste of his own medicine.”
