Kind of like "diversity is our strength" is just a stupid made up term used to demonize the average citizen who actually prefers a country built on unity rather than division. It's funny that Trudeau is actually taking a stance against populist sentiment in this country.

It's a pretty risky move politically. Populism is defined as support for the concerns of ordinary people. The fact that he admits he champions diversity and divisiveness over unity in this country is the first hint of actual honesty we've seen from him. The fact that he is taking a hard line against the concerns of ordinary people in his own country says all you need to know about this idiot.

What I see on this thread from the Left is the same sneering dismissal of concerns about uncontrolled border crossings which the EU bureaucrats demonstrated a few years back. That was before their citizens started turning to extremist parties when the progressive politicians ignored their anger over illegal border crossings. Polls taken show migrants are a huge issue in every one of the 28 EU countries, and that many want to break away from the EU because of it. Brexit was caused by the inability of the UK to control the type and number of foreigners crossing their border - and the mass of Muslim migrants coming north, which the EU seemed helpless to stop.
Canada had 50,000 asylum claims last year. Given the populations, that is actually greater than what the EU experienced in 2017. If anyone thinks they can just continue to shrug this off without it beginning to cause major social and political upheavals they haven't been watching Europe - or the US - where Trump's 'protect the border' pledge probably won him the last election.

Hating immigrants has never been the issue (with me anyway). What you don't do is open up the house and larder to the neighbourhood while you're kids are going hungry and dressed in rags.
