I know they are entitled to healthcare and social assistance on student visas because there was demonstrations in Winnipeg over removing them from foreign students.
Are you serious? A foreign national should pay their own health insurance. Now maybe they do, or maybe it's included in their tuition, or maybe the argument is that while they live here, they pay GST, etc. I'd have to check on the details of this. But however it's arranged, when even many Canadians can't afford higher education, foreign nationals should pay their own way. I could support studying and even working visa-free, but maybe they could pay a slightly lower tax to take into account that we don't cover their health care but then pay a separate flat health care fee maybe adjusted if they're smokers, drinkers, etc. I'm all for more open borders, but they should pay their own way or it becomes unsustainable.
It seems to me that Trump was given no other choice. The system that has been in place releases captured families with a 'promise to appear' at an asylum or deportation hearing. Of course 80% never turn up. Meaning the entire system is a joke. The border is a joke. If there was a process that allowed for an orderly and summary deportation of entire families that have crossed the border illegally it would be done. But it is these parents who are putting their children in jeopardy by making dangerous cross desert runs, often transported by ruthless smuggling cartels.
What does the Gospel teach on the matter of unnecessarily separating kids from their parents? Heck, what does the Gospel teach about immigration? I remember love thy neighbour as thyself and the story of the good Samaritan.
