Why Doug Trump and Donald Ford are cut from the same froth

Ontarians who loathe Donald Trump are now liking Doug Ford.

How to explain this apparent contradiction among voters — reviling the U.S. president while reconciling themselves to the Opposition leader who is poised to be our next premier?

According to his legions of supporters — polls show Ford way out in front — they are two completely different people: Trump is a typically American racist, sexist buffoon who assaults women; Ford is a quintessentially Canadian defender of diversity, family and ordinary folks.

Yet Ford admits he’d vote for Trump, “not a doubt in my mind.” And so with the campaign for Ontario’s June 7 election barely a month away, we offer this public service — the top 10 traits shared by Donald Ford and Doug Trump that make them eerily interchangeable as populist politicians:

Both are endlessly underestimated, both in performance and fortune. The U.S. media initially treated Trump as reality TV entertainment, and Ontario’s press couldn’t fathom Ford winning the Progressive Conservative leadership. They both beat all expectations and all opponents. But they also profited from the good fortune of winning narrowly on points despite losing on the popular vote. A reminder that every vote counts — because you never know how close an electoral contest will be.

They both guard against defeat by suggesting votes might be stolen from them. Trump claimed the U.S. election was “rigged” against him — until he won. So too Ford complained that his own party was stacking the deck against him: “They’re doing this on purpose to hinder me, because out of all the candidates they know I can sign up more people.... (It’s) the insiders and the elites trying to figure out how they’re going to stop Doug Ford.” Until he won, and changed his tune.

Despite casting themselves as candidates of law and order, both castigate law enforcement agencies when it suits their purposes. Much like Trump’s unprecedented vendetta against the FBI, Ford lashed out at the Toronto police over video evidence showing then-mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine (denied by the Ford brothers). He demanded the firing of then-chief Bill Blair, accusing him of being motivated by political “payback.”

It’s not just attacks on law enforcement but alleged violations of the law that unite the two politicians. While Trump has been accused of (and privately boasted of) assaulting women, Ford is an alleged trafficker in illegal drugs, according to the Globe and Mail. An in-depth investigation described Ford as a well-known hash dealer in Etobicoke in the 1980s, until about age 22, despite growing up in an affluent household. Ford denied the story and publicly threatened a libel suit, but the Globe tells me he never followed suit.

What happened to last week?

STORMY LOSES STEAM AS MEDIA SANDBAGS PORN STAR, LAWYER
Stormy’s 15 minutes of fame drawing to a close?

For starters, the Daily Beast, a left-wing outlet, reported on how another porn star, Tasha Reign, accused Stormy of “doing nothing” when she was allegedly groped and harassed on a porn set Stormy was directing in 2017.

“I was sexually assaulted by one of her crewmembers,” Reign told the Daily Beast. “He groped and grabbed me from behind… And she did not handle the situation appropriately, respectfully or professionally.”

The fact that the Daily Beast, which is no fan of Trump, is breaking the news is almost as shocking as the news itself.

On a related note, Stormy’s lawyer, Michael Avenatti, threatened to sue Daily Caller reporters after they published a bombshell report documenting some of the allegations made against him by his ex-business associates.

“Let me be clear. If you and your colleagues do not stop with the hit pieces that are full of lies and defamatory statements, I will have no choice but to sue each of you and your publication for defamation,” Avenatti wrote in an email.

“During that process, we will expose your publication for what it truly is. We will also recover significant damages against each of you that participated personally. So if I were you, I would tell Mr. Trump to find someone else to fabricate things about me.”

Interestingly, Mr. Avenatti actually spoke to the reporters beforehand when they reached out to him for comment before publishing the piece.

The fact the Daily Caller published Mr. Avenatti’s email seems to indicate the outlet doesn’t fear his threats, and all these articles combined indicate that Stormy’s crusade against Trump is starting to fade.

Which, honestly, isn’t that surprising given the mainstream media has artificially bolstered the story beyond the public’s natural attention span.

“Having far exceeded her 15 minutes of fame, she’s doing whatever she can with whatever she has to maintain the illusion she’s a serious person with an important story to tell,” the Boston Herald pointed out. “She is nothing of the sort, and if her dalliance had been with a lustful Democrat — there have been plenty to choose from — her value as a newsmaker would have been lower than her neckline.”

Thinking Ford? Cast your mind back to Walkerton

Is there an Honest Broker in the Progressive Conservative party of Ontario?

If so, please take Doug Ford aside, sit him down, and suggest he hush up while you explain some of the facts of political life, Ontario style.

Be patient, Honest Broker. Ford is new and a bit brash. He won't like it when you recall what happened two decades ago when the province was won by a leader wedded to a platform of rooting out so much waste at Queen's Park that he could simultaneously slash taxes and eliminate the deficit without, as that leader promised, touching any basic services.

That leader, of course, was Mike Harris, premier from 1995-2002, in whose caucus Ford's father sat for one term.

Before going into some of the nasty nitty-gritty (28 hospitals closed, 6,000 nurses fired, $1 billion chopped from education), please remind Ford about Walkerton.

Walkerton remains the most enduring and tragic monument to the folly of the Harris years.

Tell Ford he must read the moving account of Robbie Schnurr on the front page of Saturday's Toronto Star. Schnurr, a former OPP officer, took his own life through doctor-assisted suicide two weeks ago, making him the most recent known victim of the Walkerton tainted-water scandal.

It was a hot, muggy day in May 2000 when Schnurr drove to Walkerton to visit friends. While there, he chugged down a pitcher of tap water. He did not know that the municipal water supply had been contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

No one in the town knew. But they knew it soon enough, as 2,300 residents, half of the town's population, fell ill. Seven died and many others suffered permanent health damage.

Robbie Schnurr knew it when he got home to Mississauga and collapsed, bleeding, on the floor of his condo. "I had blood coming out of both ends," he told the Star. He lay there for two days, too weak to summon help.

The next 18 years were a downward spiral: Constant pain from a degenerative neurological disease, unemployment and, as the end neared, he was unable to walk or even open his medication bottles.

If you are still with us, Honest Broker, you might give Ford a copy of Mr. Justice Dennis O'Connor's inquiry report into the Walkerton tragedy.

The judge found that proper chlorination could have prevented the outbreak.

But budget cuts had left the provincial environment ministry without enough inspectors to oversee the system of checks and balances that had previously ensured the safety of municipal water systems.

They both have their taxpayer's best interests in mind. NOTE TAXPAYERS not the freeloaders that live off the system.

And, of course, "The Star" is a reliable, unbiased paper. Wonder why they don't publish more of the disastrous decisions made by the current (and past) Liberal administrations that also have affected 1,000's of people both financially and emotionally and, likely physically as well with their foolish and stupid "green energy" tripe that has cost Ontario billions of dollars; dollars that could improve the poor hospital situation that Ontarians can't rely on now? Huh? They should be put on trial for the corrupt decisions made to line the pockets of their buddies over the past 15 years.

While neither Party is perfect, at least Ford is saying the right things; things that resonate with the general population and, if he does half of what Trump does (which, believe me is shocking) then he deserves to at least try to correct things. Wynne hasn't a clue what damage she's done nor any idea of how to fix things.

We all have our personal foibles and Ford is no different. Just means that others get away with theirs and he's attacked - oh yeah, much like Trump even when he's actually doing what he said he would. That pisses the Dems off so they have nothing better to do and no one (or a plan) to offer as an alternative but to trash others. So be it. Whether voters got it right or not, it is what it is.

Hopefully, Ontario will review their options and vote accordingly. I simply can't see them voting for anyone but Ford, but hey, I've been wrong before (one of my "foibles" - even smoked MJ once many years ago - gasp) and will be wrong again. Whatever happens, whomever wins, I just hope they can make things right.

Why do you think they booted Mike Harris out?

That depends on what gets cut and where doesn't it?

Just another post by Flossie rejecting the real world.

Naivety, immaturity, low wattage, drug abuse and LRT lobotomis are a bad mix.

Open minded people will read both and others .

By open minded do you mean a skull fracture from an LRT?

Doug Ford rebuked after supporter chanted 'lock her up'

Doug Ford, the populist frontrunner in the race to become leader of Canada’s most populous province, has been accused of promoting “irresponsible rhetoric” after a supporter chanted “lock her up” about his rival at a campaign rally.

Ford, a blustery businessman who has positioned himself as an anti-establishment figure in the Ontario election, has repeatedly rejected parallels with Donald Trump.

But his supporters’ adoption of a chant used by Trump supporters against Hillary Clinton has drawn fresh comparisons to the US president.

At a rally earlier this week, a member of the crowd shouted “lock her up” several times as Ford spoke about energy prices. Video of the event showed Ford and the crowd laughing at the chant.

Throughout the election, Ford has accused Ontario’s current premier, Kathleen Wynne, of corruption over the privatization of Hydro One, the province’s public electricity utility. Ford has offered no evidence to support his allegations.

In response to the chant, Wynne – the leader of the province’s Liberal party – accused Ford of running an “angry” and “divisive” campaign. She said: “It’s a very disturbing trend here in Ontario and we all need to pay attention to it.”

Andrea Horwath, the leader of the province’s New Democratic party, joined in the criticism.

“It’s unfortunate that those kinds of things are happening on this campaign and Mr Ford is going to have to deal with his supporters in a way that I hope brings some respect to the political dialogue and discussion,” said Horwath, who currently polls in second place.

Ford, whose brother Rob was the mayor of Toronto, later distanced himself from the slogan. He said: “Let me be very clear: I don’t condone that. Simple as that. I don’t condone it.”
