Does the article explain that opposition to coal exports has been ongoing for decades now?

But I suppose in your world where First Nations all 100% behind the Kinder Morgan expansion nobody anywhere is against coal either.

If you were to look into it would would find that the opposition to coal exports in America is what is forcing coal up into Vancouver. Or at least trying to.

Read it.

“Climate activists do not provide solutions toward providing the world a reliable energy source, 40 per cent of which right now is provided by coal and (which is also) used to manufacture steel products. Instead, they seek to limit the availability of this product,” said David Crook, Westshore Terminal’s manager of engineering and environmental services.

Westshore, in Tsawwassen, already handles U.S. coal for export overseas.

Crook also said that restricting coal exports from British Columbia would have no tangible effect in reducing global coal use, noting that coal to be shipped through Surrey Fraser Docks represented 0.1 per cent of world coal production.

He also argued that the relationship of coal and climate change was not a matter of local jurisdiction. That has also been the position of Port Metro Vancouver, which is the main regulatory authority for the Surrey Fraser Docks project.

United Steelworkers official Scott Lunny reminded directors there are jobs tied to the coal industry in British Columbia, adding almost all coal produced in B.C. is used to produce steel.

And BTW coal, while being a horrendous polluter, does not present a spill problem for fisheries.

A spill is inevitable.

I agree and I think we should adjust the focus away from that, to minimizing the number and seriousness of spills and making them less harmful. Every endeavour we embark on has the potential of resulting in the consequences Cliffy alludes to but we should be working to reduce the severity of the potential and consequences, NOT the number of endeavours!

And BTW coal, while being a horrendous polluter, does not present a spill problem for fisheries.

Are you SURE? How about fish that share the same habitat as the coal?

the only questionable part is how anyone could dispute that BC First Nations are forming the vanguard of the opposition to Kinder Morgan's expansion.

It indicates a complete lack of understanding of the issue.

A vanguard eh. Please, do tell us what new ideas the First Nation folks have come up with regarding this issue. I most certainly haven't heard one word about that. Lots of complaints and talks about the sacredness of the land but nothing about what they plan to do if the oil is cut off as the Alberta government rightfully proposes. Have they given any thought to where the billions earmarked for their communities will come from when the money made by the Feds from the sale of oil is no longer available. Probably not.

So.........way back in 2013 there was opposition..........didn't work out very well then did it........dirty coal still leaving the port daily.

The Federal Government needs to honour the Rights of Indigenous Peoples who OWN the land and the 2014 Supreme Court ruling that says so.

I can remember when "the ecology" became a thing and literally the only person I knew of who was involved in it was John Mayall.

Coal was a health issue probably starting in the 50s and by the 60s coal (and lead in gas) was probably the thing that started the ecology movement or whatever you call it.

The opposition to coal has a long history - especially in Vancouver.

Try another tack.

Hypocritical to be against an expanded pipeline while you are at the same time against coal shipment?

o so much.

And yet, the shipments are ongoing. Dirty filthy coal continues to pollute the air and where oh where are the protestors now?

Just in case there are indeed ongoing protests, Hoid..............please be good enough to post current photos of those at the forefront of the battle, okay.

Where does one find the document that says so?

Just for a little balance could someone expound on the good points of coal?

It is rather humorous isn't it?

This is a big problem! No to Coal! We have to do something! This is an outrage!

And the ships sail away, their holds filled to the brim with coal.

All talk.

So because you are unable to completely fix one problem you have no right to try and fix another?

What planet are you from?

The trans mountain expansion is a very bad thing, regardless of whether there are other bad things or not.

And Smaack's job it to deflect attention away from his colossal fukk up country.

Fantastic spelling!

Anyhow... what do you think Cliffy? Is the expansion going through? Are you going to be there protesting? Well you bring your own shelter and supplies or will you just be like the other protesters and expect to be housed and fed by somebody else?
