No, they don't.

Because the increase is affordable to everyone.

Liek duhh

Masterful scam by queens park libs that blow $$bils upon $$bils on hydro infastructure checkers, green subsidies, e-health, choppers, etc, etc n' donate $11bil of our money every year to carry their debt. Still libs demand tim hortons should manage their finances better so they and small businesses can shoulder wynnes minimum wage election bribe. Think about it, small businesses working on razor thin margins forced to fund higher peon wages pushing up prices that peons couldn't even afford before whilst big business remains unscathed, the wage gap widens and it's all tims' fault.

Everything in Toronto is expensive.

You pay a world class price to live in a world class city.

Since when was Toronto considered to be a world class city, or any kind of class for that matter? :)

It's the chicken and egg argument. Increase wages drives up costs which drives up prices. It's not the only factor but the wages are not going to catch up. At best they may break even assuming all these business pass on $N of cost as $N of price increase. I suspect a lot are adding a little to N as it gets passed along and blaming it on the wages. So if enough business do that, slight loss. But yes businesses do change their prices from time to time. When you go to a restaurant and notice new fancy menus, I guarantee you the prices have changed.

You got it Son! It's not very nice to say "I told you so" so I won't. :)

Are you saying that public daycares would not pay the minimum wage?

How does legislating millennials out of work help them?

The daycare would be either more expense because they'd have to be unionized OR the rest of us would have to pick up the tab for subsidies.

He means landlords deciding to not become landlords. However, this is false reasoning for a couple of reasons. Landlords will not decide not to be landlords. The properties exist and they need to make money off them even with controls. What it would do is prevent new buildings being put up for rent. This too is not really a good reason as without controls new buildings have not been coming available. It is much more profitable to build and sell the properties than rent.

BC and especially Vancouver has a real problem with this. Not just the rent controls but the whole Landlord Tenant act which is heavily weighted in favor of tenants.

So what was the purpose of raising the minimum wage again?

To buy votes from people that mostly don't vote.

The daycare would be either more expense because they'd have to be unionized OR the rest of us would have to pick up the tab for subsidies.

Most likely both if the government gets heavily into daycare. A massive gift to the government unions that support them. This was the dipper's plan in BC in the 90s. Fortunately we dumped them before it came about.

The wage needs to be congruent with the nature of the work performed

You got that right Capt. The way it is now some poor bastard shovelling gravel into a dump truck can be paid the same as someone who answers the phone 3 times an hour! It just ain't right.

Mentalfloss thinks we need to raise the minimum wage to match inflation. Dog, chase your tail! Faster! Faster! Faster!

WU thinks it's a good thing for people who work hard to get poorer every year.

Don't worry, he'll come up with a brilliant legislative proposal to compel their labor.

This will all lead to a public daycare program either way.

Or don't fukking have kids if you can't afford them.

Either you pay for these private institutions to be selfish or you vote for public daycare.

The federal NDP would have done that, so we are paying for private industry instead.

Are you in favour of a national public daycare? Is this actually a national problem or a local problem?

Has anyone bothered to check what starting wage is for ECE (daycare) workers or assistants?

I did.

It was already well above $14 an hour.

Did you miss the word "assistant" in my post? It's in there a few times.

I just brought up the policy as a way to deal with the problem, but I certainly think it could be a compelling campaign promise for the Ontario Liberals in the next election.
