there aren;t as many of those as there used to be. Apparently if you hire people on part time you don't have to give them as many benefits.

EXACTLY!! This is precisely the effect of putting artificial wage and payroll pressures on companies through mandatory $15 minimum wage. Get used to it, jacking up the minimum wage will only make it worse.

Alberta had (and will have more) minimum wage hikes. I'm on the board of my golf course and we eliminated the equivalent of one full time position in the restaurant. Unfortunately really, as the staff was well paid with tips and didn't really need the increase

That tax makes little difference to young people trying to buy their first home.

Is it the employer's obligation to pay wages that will afford a home OR is it the vendor's obligation to set the price at what the wage slave can afford?

It is a society's obligation to create an economic system that provides for the needs of all.
Need yes, wants no. You want something go work for it like the rest of us.

While the 2% "stress test" rule is going to disqualify tens of thousands of them - while having literally no effect on foreign buyers.

Not sure about the tens of thousands but basically correct. OTH making loans too easy is not helping people that are borderline able to afford it. Worse it will cause distress sales which are not good for any market since it usually winds up with someone with money grabbing them.
Building codes and various bylaws have a negative effect on affordable housing as does limiting available land. Farmland should not be considered available for housing purposes.

The biggest problem with that is "society" is comprised of many segments, a lot of them contentious, so how are we to sort out who's responsible for what w/o causing a major Donnybrook?

Minimum wage is set by the government.

THAT should definitely change!

That can be manipulated to provide a favourable result. So can rock, paper, scissors actually. It might be better to build robots to deal all this. They can be cold and impartial.

Actually it's probably neither one's obligation to do f**k all! Their first obligation is to survive! :) :)

Big companies like Walmart and Tim Hortons should have to pay higher wages, they have made obscene profits on low wage workers. Small business owners should have a different standard.

I think Timmys in Alberta was paying $16-18 an hour back when everyone was paying $100 a bbl for oil for some reason.

Yep, it's pretty hard to get away with $10 an hour when every one the province is working for $16 to $18 or more!

Bigger home is it?

A wee bit but much more functional & in a little better neighbourhood.

Define loose?

Why do so many of you spell it that way?

It's irritating

That's great. So what's your solution to make homes more affordable?

Not sure, I spell it "l-o-s-e" same as I was taught in school. I really doubt if it's any more irritating than being asked about Sandy Hook 15 times or going on ad infinitum about your obsession with 14 year olds or your incessant attempts at trying to out do Putz's ignorance and Stupidity!

Depends where you are. In many places house prices have declined largely do to government interference in resource industries. In the cities tho house prices have far outstripped average workers income.

Most will loose because assessments are based on recent sales in the area. Most people don't clue in to the downside of their major investment appreciating. Unless they plan on selling and move to Cow patty Alberta. There are some good deals in Thasis but there are zero job opportunities. Pt. Hardy too.

I doubt if Port Hardy has been the same since that mine at Coal Harbour closed! Tahsis was booming back in the 60s when we surveyed for the new highway that never materialized. Lots of money pissed against the wall on that undertaking. I guess we proved it couldn't be done for a song. :) :)
