What was the cost of an average house and what was the median income?

Everything is relative (to a degree)


EXACTLY - that's why you have to shake your head at these idiots who keep thinking raising the minimum wage is going to remove the problem! If you try something once and it doesn't work it likely won't and if you try it twice and it doesn't work, chances are very slim that it will - with the exception of lottery tickets. :)

House prices have been driven up artificially. Realtors are partly responsible. I think the only way it might change is if EVERY home owner challenged his/her assessment. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. Vain people tend to brag about what their place is worth.

Depends where you are. In many places house prices have declined largely do to government interference in resource industries. In the cities tho house prices have far outstripped average workers income.

Most will loose because assessments are based on recent sales in the area. Most people don't clue in to the downside of their major investment appreciating. Unless they plan on selling and move to Cow patty Alberta. There are some good deals in Thasis but there are zero job opportunities. Pt. Hardy too.

In Greater Vernon population under 60,000 there are over 100 realtors - isn't that an indication of something?

I am trying to keep my taxes low since I don't intend to move. That means keeping foreigners from driving up prices, which also drives up the tax bill and makes it harder for local kids to stay in their community. SO make the imports pay dearly for all the extra government services that are going to require. I realize the concept is hard for anyone that grew up in a city to grasp but in rural communities it is a serious issue.

I'm probably the wrong guy to ask as I just bought a house in May. After a year of searching we finally found one the wife liked and as 10 people looked at it the first day it was listed I offered $200 OVER asking just to break any ties and make damn sure were got it. One person isn't going to change anything, but the bubble will burst.

I was assuming it is a full time job!
there aren;t as many of those as there used to be. Apparently if you hire people on part time you don't have to give them as many benefits.

As my grand daughter knows very well! :)


Which may allude to another problem. I'm wonder if there is enough profit in the sales to cover the cost of funding the perks! Is it a case of the employer being cheap or the customer being cheap? :) :)

it may burst but it will just inflate again.

it burst in the early 80s. in fact when I bought my place in 86 people were still gun shy about real estate because so many people took a beating, but anyone who managed to hang on ended up in good shape.

Foreign buyers tax. Vancouver is also putting in a bylaw that says you can't have a house unoccupied. Complete with serious fines.

I worded that poorly. Call it an entrance fee. As more people come into the community they require and demand more services which has the effect of raising all our taxes, a lot of times for things we neither want nor need. If it was up to me I would also require a substantial contribution to BCMSP to help cover the extra health costs these rich retirees put on the system without ever contributing.

As regards the so called efforts to reduce Vancouver and Toronto real estate pressure by bringing in foreign buyers taxes all that actually does is push them out of the cities and into the smaller cities and rural areas.

BC real estate prices this last year show that Vancouver now lags the rest of the province in price increases.

Also I would be more worried about my kids getting a seat at a college or university because in BC they are filling them up with as many foreign students as they can recruit - and charging them 300% more.

It's all good business until a Canadian born kid needs a first year english course and simply cannot get in.

Which is happening now and is only going to get worse.

Plus these foreign students are taking up all the part time min wage jobs as they work their way through school in the Promised Land.

That tax makes little difference to young people trying to buy their first home.
While the 2% "stress test" rule is going to disqualify tens of thousands of them - while having literally no effect on foreign buyers.
