Nobody is talking about using E85 - they are only talking about using E10 which is the international standard anyway.

internal combustion engine compress gases. When you add ethanol (or lead or any other octane booster) that same engine will be able to compress the gas to a higher pressure. If you want to know more than that go onlne and read up on it. I'm sure you;ll find out all sorts of things you didn't know.

the addition of ethanol generally results in a reduction in fuel efficiency of about 3% - so if the only factor here was the amount of BTUs in the fuel then the addition of ethanol would result in a much greater degradation in fuel economy.

btw ethanol is also refined from crude oil

How would biomass be inserted into Gasoline? I'm not being sarcastic I truly want to know

It is called gasification. All really efficient wood stoves work on the principle

Open borders could solve this. That way, anyone who can find work in Canada could move to Canada and then just buy the food at the grocers like every other Canadian. A tried and true solution. Supply management does contribute to the problem of high costs too though.

Open boarders would destroy our standard of living. Except for government employees. They would be the only rich ones.

Ethanol is naturally produced by the fermentation of sugars by yeasts or via petrochemical processes, and is most commonly consumed as a popular recreational drug. It also has medical applications as an antiseptic and disinfectant. The compound is widely used as a chemical solvent, either for scientific chemical testing or in synthesis of other organic compounds, and is a vital substance utilized across many different kinds of manufacturing industries. Ethanol is also used as a clean-burning fuel source.

So simply upping compression is all it takes to make more power thus more efficiency?

Can’t feed hungry people with crude.
not sure what this even means. Comparing ethanol to oil is nonsensical - you would need to compare it to gasoline and you would find there are theoretical improvements in overall carbon footprint.

the biggest problem with ethanol is that it is being used in engines designed for gasoline. It is a half assed effort.

Can’t feed hungry people with crude.
mst ethanol is made from sugar cane - which has killed more humans that oil ever will

.....oh and why are we making fuel from food?

When you make booze, fermentation turns carbohydrates to alcohol. With the carbs gone from the grain you are left with gluten (protein) and fibre which makes for a high dollar cattle feed.

Canadian farmers are becoming increasingly aware of this new market opportunity. Some have formed cooperatives to grow crops intended specifically as a feedstock for ethanol production. A 100-million-litres-per-year wheat-based ethanol production plant requires around 300, 000 tonnes of feed grain per year and an estimated 250, 000 acres to produce the feedstock. A plant this size would consume about 700 acres worth of production per day.

Ethanol production also offers opportunities to expand cattle feedlot operations. Large volumes of distiller's grain, a high-protein feed ingredient, are generated as a co-product of ethanol production.

in BC we have an invasive weed that we call broom (it resembles Scottish broom) it would be a wonderful thing if they could develop a fuel of some sort from this plague.

It is Scottish broom. It was imported by some dip shit Scotchman about 150 years ago because his wife was homesick.

At one time BCHydro encouraged it to grow on right of ways because it kills off pretty much everything else and doesn't grow tall.

And? There are hundreds of tonnes of blackberry and devil club too.

There are millions of tons of envirotards scattered across Western Canada, with a high concentration around Burnaby and YVR.... makes a lot of sense to use this noxious portion of the population to generate power.

... Hamster-style wheel perhaps?

Blackberries make good wine and jam. Broom has no known use since vacuum cleaners were invented.

don't tell anyone.

Scotch broom is a plant. The flower and the parts that grow above the ground are used as medicine.

Despite serious safety concerns, Scotch broom is used for heart problems including fluid retention (edema), poor circulation, low blood pressure, fast heartbeat, and irregular heartbeat.

Some people use Scotch broom for bleeding gums, a bleeding disorder called hemophilia, gout, achy muscles and joints (rheumatism), sciatic nerve pain, gall stones, kidney stones, spleen disorders, yellowing of the skin (jaundice), lung conditions, and snake bites. It is also used for cleansing the intestine and to cause vomiting.

Women use Scotch broom for heavy menstrual periods and for bleeding after childbirth.

Scotch broom is applied to the skin for sore muscles, pockets of infection (abscesses), and swelling. It is also used in hair rinses to lighten and brighten hair.

How does it work?
Scotch broom contains chemicals that might cause an increase in body water loss through the urine. It also contains chemicals that affect heart rhythm.

SO while the world starves we are turning valuable food crop land into low grade fuel for cars while perfectly good and much more efficient oil sits in the ground.

That's what's called "progressive" don't 'cha know! In fact, whoever dreamed it up is likely considered a genius because it kills two birds with one stone: starves the population and destroys gawd awful motor vehicles! And, said genius has likely benefitted greatly from his idea in some way for sure!

Just sayin'

I will pass that one along. Odd this area is overrun with the stuff but no one seems to know that.
