They aren't.
No Canadian government will ever pay down the debt again. It is far too politically costly and none of them will ever have that kind of capital. The Liberal government of the 1990s was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
I agree. I doubt if the deficit and debt will ever be paid down but not for the reasons stated. I have come to believe that when governments pay people money e.g. increased child benefits, rebates on GST and Carbon Taxes etc., they don't dare take any of that back because they'd pay holy hell at the voting booth. People want something for nothing and don't give a rats ass where the money comes from. Rather then pull up their socks and either getting a better education or a better job, they want the government to pay for everything.
Trudeau has really increased the Canada Child Benefit to such an extent that we really can't afford it. Should any other government (no matter what political stripe) try to reduce the amounts paid, there would be holy hell.
I have a friend who has no kids and recently said she and her hubby were getting an extra $800 from the government from some program (she couldn't tell me which one and believe me they don't need it) I said it was sad that our children would end up paying the bills for all these "extras" and she stated categorically - I don't care - I don't have kids. What a horrible way to think of things. We're simply being greedy at someone else's expense down the road.
Truly a sad state of affairs.
