Not as much as when you get kidnapped and held for years and tortured.
Obviously, but what I am looking at is still illegal and if we are to compensate harsher treatment with millions, which is a hell of a lot more than most of us will ever accumulate, it does not sound fair.
So do you think smaller injustices by our own police should go uncompensated?
Why give Canadian police a free pass?

You can be held in police custody without being charged for 24 hours, after that they have to show cause to justify holding you longer, or formally lay charges. No paperwork is required for your release, it's required to hold you longer, the scenario you describe isn't how it works.
A charge had been laid, a verdict given, and a release signed.
Muddy the waters if you like but the facts I put are clear and an injustice clearly shown.

$200 a day............................you don't want people trying to break in there!
Sound a little stingy given that a complainant would likely have to hire a lawyer to put the claim before a judge.
Compare that $200.00 a day to the 10 million we paid to the last 4 people we paid compensation to.

Not as much as you should get when a Countries government and legal authorities set you up knowingly using false info.
You might want to watch the Moahmed Fahmy documentary on how inhumane jails are in those countries.......

If knowingly using false information, then someone should be fired. Who was fired or charged with libel?
You might also know that by many standards, our own penal system is quite inhumane.
We treat our pets better. Mind you, my personal experience is getting dated now so take my testimony with a grain of salt.

The time I got convicted on false info ( the only time), it cost the local police chief his job.
( Staff Sargent was also denied a raise and a promotion for three years.)
I still paid the fine and would have to pay for a pardon
At that time it was pay a $200 CAD fine or spend a week in jail.
Any one who trusts government or its employees is taking a real chance
Trust, but verify and complain if you think something is amiss.
I do think that we need to improve on the systems you name.
Just look at the sexual abuse within our policing systems, right to the top.

I hear you, I believe in many organizations there's an "old boy's club" which is next to impossible to penetrate!
Change is happening but way too slow for my taste.
IMO, victims who do not lay a complaint in a timely fashion should be penalized if more victims are created by the assailant who was left free to continue his abuse of others. That would include victims of pedophile priests and others.
Even victims need to remember the Golden Rule that says they should try to protect future victims. They might not have become victims if a prior victim had stepped up with a charge or not just taken a pay off.
This might be seen as blaming the victim but they are to blame to some extent if they do not do the right thing from the start and lay a charge so as to warn future victims.
