FIRST:
[Some Jewish men and some Muslim men boasted to each other;
the Jews said: "We are the chosen people of God, and God will forgive us our sins whatever sins we may commit."
While the Muslims said: "No, but it is we to whom God will forgive our sins, because we have believed in God and His messenger Mohammed."
Therefore, this aya was revealed:]
Quran 4: 123. It is not according to your vain desires [Muslims], nor the vain desires of the people of the Bible [: Jews and Christians];
but anyone who does evil shall be punished accordingly, and shall not find for himself apart from God any patron or helper.
More explanation according to the interpreter of the Quran and the Bible, Mohammed-Ali Hassan Al-Hilly:

SECOND:
So this wrong idea is prevalent among followers of all these religions: that they are preferred by God ..
So merely for being Jews: supposed to be the Chosen People of God, so they take the bribe and transgress on other people .. steal, gamble, take the usury and commit the abominations and they think that God will forgive them .. because they are preferred to others and God loves them ..etc.
Christians think Jesus loves them (most of them think Jesus is God Himself or Jesus is His son) and they love Jesus and so Jesus loves them .. and he came to the earth so as to redeem them ..etc; then when they commit the crimes and the flagrant sins contradicting even the first commandment .. then Jesus redeems them and they will go to heaven following their death .. then they go to the clergy and confess their sins and the clergy tells them: Go you have been forgiven!
Muslims also have acquired this wrong misconception: Mohammed will intercede for them with his great intercession that is not given to any prophet .. and so they will go to Paradise; some sects think that Ali will intercede for them: and he tells Hell: this one is for me, and that one is for you!
So all this is wrong: the one who commits the evil and sins .. will be requited of it.
