Bang on Murph.
Being in Iraq during when ISIS raped there way through the Sinjar region changed my life. And being attacked by some ISIS douche bags kinda made me look at life differently.
It does that. It is also very hard to explain to others. Because many people here have not experienced anything like it, they assume you are lying or trying to be a drama llama. I remind people to be happy that you live somewhere where violence doesn't happen almost daily.
Did you prefer Iraq when it was run by Saddam and his fun-loving sons Udeh and Qsay?
I cant make that comparrison I never went through the Saddam experience.
But that's a seperate Iraq. I spent most of my time with the Kurds and they are cool folk.
It kinda ****ed me up. I became more arrogant, way too arrogant after.
It all kinda connects. In time and in space. Basing actions on the here-and-now without looking at those connections is probably one of the reasons the West is so widely hated.
Here's an example. The McCarthy purges of the mid-1950s pretty much cleaned out the East Asia hands from the State Department, people who had a deep understanding of East Asia, its history, cultures, and attitudes. The absence of these people contributed directly and massively to our blundering incompetence in Vietnam.
I also heard that the Americans method of sweeping and clearing an area was a horrible way to defeat the viet-cong. They would have been better off if they swept and held an area like what happened to the insurgents in Phillipines before Vietnam.

Sweeping and holding allows you better control of the battles tempo.
How many millions of infantry do you think it would have required to sweep and hold every piece of ground?
Millions? You clear and hold a few towns, you protect the civilians, you bring them to your side. Take main logistic terminals force the insurgents into the crappy ground.
Now if the majority of the populace suppourt the insurgancy then neither method is effective.
Hey man your country uses it, its worked before. They are expanding upon the idea.

Certainly if you swept and held every hill, every valley, every hamlet, every mountain you'd be in good shape... but you'd need millions of infantry.
Really? I can come up with some different terms. Did you not get the memo, Syria escaped and that means Iran escaped. The Golan Heights and all her billions in treasure will remain with Syria wo will also become an exporter rather than just a conduit into the EU. Russia will be selling all they can produce to India and China.
Fire-bases are only good if they are never bombed. There isn't one that exists that can't be put out of commission in a single day. They are also subject to sieges and those hardly ever turn out well.
