Nothing wrong with a free education for useful degrees like medicine and engineering and trades. These are what keeps the world rolling along. A liberal arts degree along with a lot of OJT will qualify you to pump gas at a self serve.
The education system sucks because it is run by teachers instead of business people.

Except we were racist . Chinese lived in Chinatown , Japanese lived in Japtown , Little Italy et/al .
Even up until the 1960's Jewish people had to build their own golf club because they could not get membership in existing clubs .

That's just silly! Ethnic groups live in their own communities because they want to. Nobody made them do it. They still do.
Every city has its ethnic community. It's natural for people to want to live with others of similar backgrounds, native language, heritage, etc.

Winnipeg, where we lived for eight years had the most clearly defined racial communities of any other city that we lived in. We lived in the WASP community, River Heights. That didn't mean we were racist. Everyone moved around the city in the course of their shopping, doing business, socializing and sight-seeing but they all preferred to live among people of similar backgrounds.
I don't see anything wrong with that.

Nothing is free. Somebody pays for it. If the public has to pay for one professional education then they should pay for all. That's socialism. In an equal society how can you pick and choose who you pay for?
Before there was any funding assistance of any kind, poorer kids still managed to become doctors, lawyers, engineers, whatever. Sometimes they took it one term at a time, working in between to finance their educational costs. Sure, it took longer but when they graduated they started free of debt.
A local lawyer here told me about his struggle, with two alcoholic parent, no connections and no help whatsoever.
A local veterinarian told me about having to choose between eating and paying for his text books.
People like that had the determination to make whatever sacrifices were necessary to achieve their goal. The kids of today are spoiled. They think they are entitled, that higher education is a 'right'. Well it isn't a right. It's a privilege. Just like so many other things they take for granted.

"Al Franken: "Mrs. DeVos, do you still believe in conversion therapy?"
She said student debt has gone up 980% in 8 years. Franken says it's acually 118%"

Well obviously, somebody is wrong!

I though most of the questioners were pretty dumb. They mentioned several times about 'poorer' and 'better' quality public schools. Wouldn't you think they would address the question of why there are poorer and better quality schools. Should all schools have the same learning tools, qualified teachers, etc.?
I don't understand why a Federal official has to oversee some of the issues that were covered anyway. Isn't education primarily under State jurisdiction? It stands to reason that different States would have different educational need due to population, urbanity or rurality and safety issues. So why shouldn't the States have autonomy as long as the curriculum is the same for all?

I have to disagree.. Bussiness people make more money from the stupid than any other demographic.

trouble with a free education
teaches do NOT tip
they are in general a greedy bunch of paid once a month types
with benefits too

just try getting them to work for free
I dare ya

lol
but hey...
if we can has robot cars
we can has robot tutors too

come to think of it...we could have fake news robots too
:)
well the news would be real - the robots would be fake

@DM
well, we can't be giving out buggywhip PHDs
though I am all for universal health care and education if done in a sensible manner
first we have to find some properly educated people to design that stuff and make it work

lobbyists and unionists need not apply for the design stage

My favourite teacher ever was trained in a German work camp in Serbia. He was a very competent instructor, I owe him a lot, but he's been dead for a while, so I'm troubled as to how to pay him in kind.

He taught me how to file to real close tolerances and engine listening, what a certain toned clunk meant, smooth

Making University education expensive is a way to keep the general public at reading and writing levels, basic. Revolutions are created by educated people that see that they are being mistreated. Student loans would seem to be a form of enslavement rather than being there as a no-strings-attached gift from the Government (collective citizens) Liberal arts can take up the painting and design ends of development and the ones more suited to 'hands on' do the construction part. The design end would also need a practical input that the artistic part uses as a base.

Did you also learn that socks can be worn as mitts??

You would love a 3D printer if you do fine designs. I'm more of a mallet man, seems to fit all occasions to the degree that I need. I hit usually does the trick if the metal is at the right temp.

I have a pretty good filing system
I refret guitars and basses on the side
I know exactly where i have put them when i need to find them

youtube was my teacher
one day I'll post some instructions on my new techniques and pay the system forward
:)
I use the globall warming gas CO2 to freeze shrink the fret wire so the old frets pop right out of the guitar like magic
and I pre file the new fret wire in a jig I made before chopping it into frets and putting them in the guitar
saves a days work on a few hour job

Hydraulic engines (or anything with a turbo) whines tell how they are performing. Hearing protection is needed though unless being deaf is an asset later in life.

You honored his memory, you are paid in full and the education will continue a bit farther down this same road.

Somehow I got into the 'do not do this at home' channel. 2 weeks isolation just to discover what the boiling point of gasoline was. Most time only one lesson was needed. Un-mounting a bike by sailing over the handlebars was a work in progress, I quit while I was ahead.

Yer a mechanic, me too, metal rules, why not suggest a metal tune? I would sample your taste in music. If you would be so kind as to do.

FRee for the student. I don't mind shelling out a few bucks to educate people that will repay that many times over in taxes. I'm not big on socialism so I don't have a problem picking who gets help.

would venture that Donald will do a lot of delegating and the VP will be playing a more prominent role than usual. The D will take the credid t for the constructive stuff and find a target to blame when things do n't go as intended . That is Donalds nature.. and that won't change. Now.Why will the VP play a prominent role?? Because he comes with a quiet but experienced CV and He has the personality to deal with the erratic Donald. Donald does not deal with facts all that well..particularity if they don't fit his world view. He does not know what the job involves. He believes in the deal.. but the job requires a lot more nuance and subtlety.

He operates from the position of :

If you can't beat them with brains.. you baffle them with bull sh*t.

It is a very good thing that his nominees are being grilled as aggressively as they are..as it is they that will do the work.

I listened to an interview of a long time employee of Trump. He said that the way Trump does things, he delegates, he tells the employee what he wants done and how he thinks it should be done then he stands aside and lets his employee work. He will come back later and if the job is done to his satisfaction, good. If not, "You're fired".
That's the way a successful boss has to operate. I expect he will operate the same way as POTUS.

Of course you are correct as common sense would indicate. I wish the forum would get rid of 4 or 5 twits, who think the "sky is falling".

Well if you give free education to stupid people they'll still be stupid people. I guess I don't get the point you are making.

Yeah, there's a few of them who blab off here. :)

Don't think that all successful business people operate. ( Yes.it can be hard nosed etc. but Trump is the extreme. That is not how you treat your staff. I agree that he will probably delegate most of the WORK.. but probably because he does not know how to run a government. You can't just walk in , start tearing protocols apart and bring in new things without consequences. . and say " I did id I t my way.

Hope Donald begins to see the difference between thereality of governing..and the unreality of TV. It is not a game and everything is not based on deals.

Funny, they have all the appearances of being on a mission

the art of the bone on
Ludlow
compared to what you have with hillary the arch enema of everything holy
"we came we saw he died cackle cackle cackle..."
say, has anybody seen Libya's gold lately...?
certainly none of the Americans dying there will, nor any Americans living on the street at home

..and it was the US supported rebels in Syria who used poison gas
that carries a death sentence if I recall
that's is what you want for president?

little miss war crimes

sorry man
no friggin way
the rest of the world can't tolerate being treated like that
just so a crooked bunch of SOROS nazis can get rich

we would have to nuke you
