Ontario offers some good news and some good politic

There was some good news and some good old-fashioned politicking in the throne speech that Ontario’s Liberal government hopes will carry it through to the next election scheduled for 2018.

The good news comes in the form of an announcement that the province will create 100,000 new licensed child care spaces over the next five years, a badly needed initiative that will have long-term benefits for children and families.

The government estimates the operating costs for expanding child care at between $600 million and $750 million, plus considerably more for start-up costs. It’s a big number but it’s a big need, as well.

Ontario has licensed care spaces for only a fifth of its young children. Families are forced to join long wait lists to get their kids into decent care, and pay a big chunk of their income once they find it. The lack of affordable, reliable child care has even been identified as one of the principal causes of the stubborn pay gap between men and women.

The government expanded child care by 56,000 spaces over the past three years, so the new goal indicates it is significantly stepping up its efforts in this vital area. That’s all to the good, and it should have a big payoff down the line in well-being for children, young families and society as a whole.

Ontario offers some good news and some good politics

Increasing the supply of government job is always good for the economy. NOT.With most of the industry gone there is no need for free childcare.

Sort of like screwing everybody with hyrdo rate increases for years and years and then suddenly pretending to be concerned?

You mean knowing well ahead of time about your rate increase and they still give you a gubmint break even though you should be paying your fair share?

No.... We mean being warned of 40% increases over the next few years and getting 400% increases. Do the math. Mine's gone from $72 a month in 2006 when I bought this place to $338 a month this year. I'll assume you've calculator enough to cypher it out ....

Northern Ontario,
I've been on equal billing for years, and since I live in town, my rates are lower than rural rate.....$75. per month
And August being the even out month and until 2012 I would be away most of the summer so I would get a small refund....

2011........$20.27 Refund
2012........$31.75 Refund
2013........$64.04 Payment
2014........$82.55 Payment
2015........$55.41 Payment......still not the full $75.00
2016.......$193.24 Payment
Now that's what I call an increase.....in a single year...all because of the subsidized solar panels and windmills ruining the landscape....
And y'all wonder why I despise the Liberals and the greenies.....

Sir Adam Beck, the founder of Ontario Hydro, promised sufficient electricity in perpetuity at cost as the mandate of the publicly Crown Corporation.

Ontario has some kind of quasi public, private composite that will inevitably become ever more private as its sold off to compensate for collapsing revenues as the province's industrial vigour evaporates. A privately held monopoly with a sole object of profit is the only possible outcome.. and then rates will skyrocket to what the market will bear.

That pathetic dyke premier is mortgaging what few assets the province has left to save the dimishing prospects of reelection.

Well, if you want it at cost, be prepared to pay a lot more.

Ontario Hydro up to the rancid Mike Harris regime was an efficiently and effectively managed corporation.. respected world wide. Once Harris and Wynne started to dice it up all economies of scale and long term planning were lost to rig short term profits (or political expediency), and subvert long term investment in power generation, delivery and system maintenance. Whatever scraps Wynne throws to you, you'll pay for.. with compounded interest and profit gouging in the long run.
