"Don't bite the hand that feeds you."

First Past the Post is still widely used around the Westminster style systems around the globe, in spite of alternate experiments out there. Even with its obvious flaws, it may still be the best bet.

No it's time for that to change.

The bipolar shift this country keeps going through is reason enough.

Re: Trudeau’s electoral-reform pledge will be hard to accomplish

Conservative newspapers are really bitter........

Seriously, this is what passes for journalism in the paper today? I can't tell if s**t like this is published because the papers are failing, or if the papers are failing because s**t like this is published.

I would be saying the same thing if parties were reversed too. This does nothing except allow a "journalist" a platform to cry about election results. There is no new information, it's just an opinion piece that I'm sure we could find 1000 more of on independent blogs.

There is absolutely no way to know what kind of a mess the conservatives left behind until the new government has had a chance to go over things. All they have to do is release the facts as they discover them, both good and bad, and the public can decide for itself.

I'm hoping that the situation is no worse underneath that it appears on the surface, that would be a pleasant surprise but I'm not holding my breath.

It's pretty sad that the Tory press is upset that more people chose to exercise their right to vote, I guess that means that democracy is only democracy if it's right wing voters making the choices.

Liberals have a track record of lying. Also stealing from the west to benefit Ontario and Quebec.

He'll get a pass like Obama did because the prior administration was so terrible.

Re: Trudeau’s electoral-reform pledge will be hard to accomplish

I agree with a lot of things they proposed this is not one of them
I am tired of those who want to have endless bickering through
a system that allows the whole barnyard to have a say even when
the majority of our creatures have already spoken with a ballot as
to where they want to go.
Everyone gets there say they go vote and the winner wins its that
simple. This 30% of talking heads get 30% of the seats. and so
on is nonsense look at countries in Europe they place is an electoral
basket case

LOts of conjecture and guesses. I think I will keep waiting to see what happens.

Changing Canada’s electoral system: What are the options? - National | Globalnews.ca

But, I do not think that Canadians have a big say in governance anyway, so changing electoral systems is just like offering bacon with eggs poached in cream and topped with cheddar to a person with CAD .... nice but it will not help. Big whoopee.

"There's no question that this is a time when corporations have taken over the basic process of governing." J K Galbraith said that in 2005 and nothing has changed in that context since.

So right.

That is how they got elected. The Canadian voter didn't say "Wow, those Liberals are JUST what we need!" So much as "YOU'RE FIRED!" to the Conservative government.

I hope that someone periodically reminds Justin of that.

Re: Trudeau’s electoral-reform pledge will be hard to accomplish

I suppose one of the things I find most annoying about our electoral process is the inequality of seats among the regions. I cannot see how ON/QC should have more say over prairie issues or maritime or whatever issues than the people that live in those regions. It is one reason why I do not think a strong central government is anywhere near efficient.

That's right. Thank god that Harper kept his repeated election promise and left us with a democratically elected Senate.

Actually, if you look at the population sizes of the ridings, Ontario and say, Alberta's ridings are about the same population size. It is pretty fair between on those two.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Population_of_Canadian_federal_ridings

My own riding, Oakville, has about 120,000 which is larger than most. The riding was just split and Oakville North was added, itself over 100,000 which goes to show how seriously unbalanced it was before. Anyway, if it seems that we are more represented than you, It is an illusion and if anything, we are a bit less. It's just that, overwhealmingly, this is where most Canadians live.

Re: Trudeau’s electoral-reform pledge will be hard to accomplish

ON, 121 seats in HoC
QC, 78 seats
BC, 42 seats
AB, 34 seats
etc etc

BC has to get ON and QC on board if it wants to spit in the Pacific Ocean or whatever even though ON or QC have dickall to do with the Pacific.. Get the idea?
