Who are you people who get phone calls from candidates? Do you have landlines or something?

I'm not sure you really understand how elections work.

Not rocket science there, Sweetie. You mark your choice on a piece of paper and add them up and if your man gets the most votes he/she is the winner. I've probably voted in 25 elections at various levels so I think I have an inkling! :):). Have any more ideas you want to run past me?

How does this preclude strategic voting?

Stupid question!

You can't answer it.

may as well face it JLM these pricks are experts at telling you what they think you want to hear making promises that you want to happen. Once they are elected, they wouldn't wipe their a$$ with you or your interests. Kinda like tv preachers.

Slade's people called three times. He's Sudbury and my Markstay phone number wasn't a clue. Liberals? Two calls and the speaker never once referred to the candidate. At least when NDP called here, it was the guy from my riding.

My wife got a card from her union telling her how to vote. Of course she is not a Canadian citizen but it did not stop them.
Mail-order bride?

That explains a lot.

Well, first you get all snuggle and intimate with the gal (or guy) of your choice, then start kissy-facing some, maybe some clinching and a caress or two, and voila!

Oh, wait. You said "elections." With an L.

Never mind.

The first past he post system is a complete deformation of the Parliamentary political process.

A rating system which would assign a preference of 3 candidates in order (at the discretion of the voter)... the lowest candidate being dropped until a simple majority in achieved.. or all choices have been exhausted.. would be much fairer and achievable.

Unfortunately the demographic on the left is much more fragmented that that on the right.. which means a Conservative government would never implement it.. since it would likely unify progressive elements against it.

Since the system is not fair.. i encourage Canadian voters to vote strategically. Maybe we can get this incompetent idiot Harper out of office... before he destroys the country with his rabid Free Market mania... and his pathetic grovelling before his 'supra'national puppet masters (WTO, IMF, World Bank, Wall Street).

You forgot Israel.

Cuz it's none of the Union's friggin' business.............they have their noses into far too much stuff as it is. They should just stick to a role of safety on the work site and let the managers run the business.

With the way some people post around here, it's almost as if they actually think that's how you conduct an election.

Speaking for myself there ,Corduroy, the way I've been voting for 50 years seems to work, so why knock it? :)

The government regulates workplace safety. If it's the union's only job to concern itself with workplace safety, then they have an interest in politics.

Too easy.

Why knock strategic voting? Because it's not the way you do it?

Maybe because it's counter productive. The purpose of an election is to determine who/what is most popular. How does voting for something/one you don't like expedite that end?

It's a cartoon, bozo. Not surprising you don't know the difference. Ironic that you posted a meme in your frustration. Take a Valium.

Canadian almost always vote out governments they don't like. Rarely do we vote in a government. Strategic voting is just one way of voting out a government. Not much has changed, only the name.

The purpose of an election is to select a government not determine who is popular.

I remember an episode on the Waltons. Some hot shot pretty boy with a good line of shyt comes to town to run for sheriff. Goes all around making promises and buying votes with various favors. Even lands ole John Walton a big contract for some wood benches to be made. Pretty soon John Boy, who runs the local paper , becomes aware of what the deal is after a convo with the candidate's campaign manager. So, he prints the truth in the local paper and pretty much destroys the credibility of the candidate and the incumbent keeps his sheriff job. Of course the favors disappear along with the furniture contract as well,. That was an episode of a tv program. But not far from the truth in politics IMO. Kinda jaded here but I don't see any Abe Lincolns out there. Maybe a honest Lady who is qualified may run for prez some day. That's when I might vote again. For someone who cares more about people, than protecting their own legacy.
