Danny Williams says Stephen Harper's tactics are borderline racist

Former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Danny Williams says some of the tactics of Conservative Leader Stephen Harper are borderline racist.

Williams, who led a Progressive Conservative government in Canada's most easterly province from 2003 to 2010, launched his latest scathing attack against Harper and the Conservative Party of Canada on Sunday during an interview with CBC News.

He used the word racism in reference to the debate over the wearing of the niqab by Muslim women taking part in the oath of citizenship.

Williams said the issue is not worthy of becoming a national issue, but the Conservatives have latched onto it in order to secure votes.

"He doesn't care if he isolates the issues of women or if he isolates the issue of minorities, and even crosses, possibly, that racism line," Williams stated.

"It doesn't matter to him. It's all about getting elected at the end of the day."

...more..

More desperation. Williams can't even use the proper word, apparently. If anything the word should be "bigotry", not "racism". But Williams is wacked anyways. It isn't the Cons that have "latched onto" it, it's the other two desperately searching for "dirt".
And using the word "racism" in relation to the debate is an extremely vague comment. If you want to say Harpy is racist, or at least seems racist, then just say that.

I wonder who the editor was that allowed the printing of that article. He or she seems to be in need of re-educating on the use of the English language.

Borderline racist bastard.

Yeah. I think it was also Harpy that formally apologized for the "Chinese head tax".

Harper should be charged with over fishing he has presented so many red herrings
Terrorists under ever bed, the nijab and so on. I think the fight is to the finish with no
compromise and when its over we will be back at the polls by summer. Minority
likely a Liberal minority however I will support Mulcair this time round we need not go
back to the Tories and the Tories have convinced me Trudeau is not the guy.
I do have the feeling the Tories are in more trouble than they let on

But nowhere near the trouble facing Mulehair! :) He's floundering now and every time he opens his mouth things get worse. It's either going to be Harper or Jr. on Oct. 19- mark my words. If people get rid of Harper they will have nothing to bitch about until the bills start coming in at the end of the month. :)

Damned near any time someone does or says something that someone else disagrees with and involves a citizen from a different country these days, they are branded "racist". The word is almost as meaningless as the word "amazing" it's been watered down so much these days and it is catching up.

Stephen Harper, a prime minister we can't trust: Danny Williams

Stephen Harper, a prime minister we can't trust: Danny Williams

People sometimes ask about my “grudge” with Stephen Harper. The fact is that I hold no grudge at all. My views simply reflect my first-hand experience in my former capacity as a premier of a province I love, in a country I love.

Having dealt with other former prime minsters, I was accustomed to disagreements and differing viewpoints. But I was also accustomed to working with leaders from all parties who demonstrated integrity, concern for the country and genuine intentions. Stephen Harper, by direct contrast, represents none of these things. Rather he is divisive and untrustworthy.

I concede that Harper is a master political strategist — in the worst possible way. His overriding strategy is to carve up the electorate, turning pockets of society into voting blocks with the sole goal of winning elections turning regions against one another, or writing provinces off altogether — as he did with Newfoundland and Labrador. Nation-building is not his thing.

His leadership is built on divide and conquer. And Canadians deserve better.

This is a prime minster who has stubbornly refused for years to meet with premiers who have been elected to represent their provinces. In a federation such as ours this is incredibly short-sighted and insulting. The prime minister should be listening to and understanding the needs and concerns of all regions from coast to coast to coast.

As for his much-vaunted economic performance, recent studies raise some significant doubts; and based on 16 key indicators, his economic record is suggested to be the worst of any prime minster since the Second World War. This year our great country now lags behind 139 other countries that are growing faster than ours. When first elected, he was handed the keys to the kingdom with a robust economy, a large surplus and a solid fiscal foundation. His performance since has been dismal. He has overseen six budget deficits in eight years, grown our trade deficit more than any other prime minister, and when the world was in financial turmoil he was advising Canadians to invest. Canada is the only G7 country this year in recession.

His position on ethnic issues during this campaign amounts to nothing less than fear-mongering and divisive politics at its worst. His proposed hotline to report “barbaric cultural practices” is a glaring example of his politics of fear and division.

Harper also has a history of surrounding himself with (at best) questionable individuals. Some of the most prominent people appointed or hired by him have been investigated, charged or convicted of criminal activity. And the man, who is known as a control freak, develops a striking lack of insight when it comes to the activities of those who are closest to him. Denying knowledge of the Duffy scandal stretches credulity. Politics trumps democracy, the electoral process and respect for Parliament and its officers. Instead we get secrecy, suppression of evidence and muzzling of scientists.

Leaders should inspire. Leaders should unite. Leaders should make tough decisions for the right reasons; not any decision that buys a vote. Leaders should build bridges and create hope and optimism. Leaders should be trustworthy. They should be there for all segments of society — for veterans, for farmers, for immigrants, for our children, and for Aboriginal Peoples.

By contrast, my experience with Stephen Harper has been nothing but broken promises, backing out of commitments, lack of respect for voters, marginalizing those he sees as expendable, and a passion for staying in the prime minister’s chair that far exceeds his passion for the betterment of the people of Canada. Simply put, I don’t like Stephen Harper.

Now, we don’t need to like our prime minister, but we darn well deserve to have one we can trust.

Danny Williams is a former premier of Newfoundland.

Turdoh will move us backward with his new taxes, carbon pricing and deficits.

One of the scarier things about Jr. is I think he actually believes that upgrading infrastructure will solve the unemployment problem. Does he actually figure a laid off chef is able to just start laying sewer pipe? At best it will improve the lot of one industry- construction.

I notice the same idiot is still handing out reds - probably too stupid to realize, that it's a sign of low I.Q.:) (Oooops I've probably pissed a couple of others off) :) :)

Danny Williams is a loose cannon with a personal axe to grind. He can't see the forest for the trees.
Harper is just trying to protect our society's laws, culture and traditions. Those laws, cultures and traditions that have been established over the past by immigrants from every country who came together and built Canada into a place where every race and nationality wants to be. Why would we allow immigrants now to start changing it back to what they came from?
Think, people! FGS THINK! Think, think, think, Try to understand what it takes to preserve our way of life. If you want a different way of life you can go somewhere else; maybe Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya? Haha! That would get you away from racism, wouldn't it?
