But but Harper and the conservatives saved us don't you remember?
It was all short term to look like action as a substitute for planning and
the chicken are coming home to roost

The quality of jobs available is going down-down-down as we switch to a service sector economy. The graphs never show any of that.

I remember way back in the 1970's , when "Futurists" were all the rage and they were predicting this wonderful future where automation would replace workplace drudgery and we'd all be free for more leisure! We were heading to leisure society!.

Well, it's happening. There are more and more North Americans and Europeans with nothing else to do. What the futurists missed is that no one, anywhere is going to pay anyone for their leisure time and rather than a "leisure society" we are headed for a "poverty society".

The service based economy isn't all that bad if you have an education that complements it. IT is the way to go.

I understand that there are lay-offs in the oil field but every day I hear of companies who are hiring. They're good jobs - not service sector jobs either. Jobs that pay well, have overtime (which is something else considering) with benefits. Some companies will train and are recruiting both men and women for these higher paying jobs (and yes, some are unionized).

A co-workers husband was laid off and looking for work. Sent out tons of resumes and not getting any responses. I gave her a list of companies who were looking and actively advertising for workers. All he needed to do is get his Class 3 license and he was working the day after he finished getting it. EI paid for the course. Now his new employer is going to send him on a crane course which means when he's finished he'll be making even more money. You see, he's willing to go the extra mile to ensure he becomes a valuable employee, building on the skills he already had.

There are jobs out there - just have to look and listen. If you don't have the skills, get them! EI will pay for the course if it means a job.

You did a good thing for your co-worker and her husband. I'm proud to call you a (kinda, sorta, internet) friend.

No, really. Feel good about this. The effect your small bit of advice will have on their lives is gigantic, and all improvement. I ain't saying you saved their lives, but you saved them a heck of a lot of misery. That's a good day's work.

Not every job in a service based economy is in IT or another well-paying discipline. It's not about the handful of people who can make a living out of it, but the social impact of the entire system. That's the problem with people who deride minimum wage workers for not having better jobs. They don't understand that there aren't better jobs, or that our economy requires those low-paying jobs, or that education and hard work doesn't equal success. It's not about your individual achievement. It's the entire system we live in.

How many of those struggling to make ends meet are willing to go out of town to work? Or perhaps more important can pass the D&A test to get these good jobs?

Glad to see someone realises that. EVERYONE has to eat and a lot jobs to do with eating aren't particularly high paid. Maybe a good thing or a lot of people would be starving!

Not according to the news yesterday.

Oh no, of course not. They would never say anything like that. They just pretend they're helping them by insulting them and kicking them down. That's the only way their conscience can reconcile their visceral hatred of the poor.

There is no book of Obligations. Are you a Christian, JLM? Sorry, I shouldn't assume.

You will find it in the Book of Jobs.

The worlds corporations took the jobs to the third world. For years they got
incentives,, subsidies, tax breaks and we should get that money back After
all they kept saying they were creating jobs.
We were snookered in 2008 for short term Tory gain and now the real ugly
face of recession is coming to a town near you.
The companies don't pay their fair share for the infrastructure and upkeep of
the land as it were. Everyone else pays. Now its time everyone belly up to the
bar.
Harper got lucky not smart and the holes in the policy are showing up
