Cleanliness, it turns out, has been one dirty trick. One reason early-20th-century Americans ramped up their weekly baths to daily showers is that marketing companies capitalized on the insecurities of a new class of office drones working in close quarters. As Gizmodo wrote last week, to sell products like "toilet soap" and Listerine to Americans, "the advertising industry had to create pseudoscientific maladies like 'bad breath' and 'body odor.'"

Take, for instance, Gizmodo's description of the philosophy of the Cleanliness Institute, which was founded by the Association of American Soap and Glycerine Producers:
The trade association wanted Americans to to wash quite unwittingly after toilet, to wash without thought before eating, to jump into the tub as automatically as one might awake each new day.
And so we did. A Reddit user recently polled 562 people and found that most men said they showered daily. Women's bathing rituals were more diffuse, but about 60 percent preferred to shower three, four, or five times weekly.

In the warmer weather it's everyday for me. I can't go to bed feeling sticky from the days humidity and sweat.
In the cold weather I'll put it off a couple or so days, unless I get sting ring then all bets are off.

I just heard on the radio within the last year that the reason we have so many allergies is we are too clean, it's getting to the point of ridiculousness, people turning bathroom door handles with a napkin, you can get a paper towel by merely running your hand below the dispenser at a distance. We never saw any of this sh*t when we were kids and we very seldom got sick. It's just a big cash grab for someone, not necessarily limited to those selling soap. You can always tell when it's time for a bath or shower...............people start moving away from you. That takes 2-3 weeks.

I'm guessing the real estate agents in your area must really love you.

i hate baths, don't like sitting in my own dirty water, the shower is so much more fresh, clean water

running off of your body the whole time, taking your dirt and oil with it, and the hair gets the

shampoo at the same time,

i don't shower every day, very bad for one's skin, the oil on your skin is healthy and should stay

there a bit longer than 24 hours, which means, a shower every day would take that oil away almost

all the time, then one would have to smear body lotion on every day, because of the dry skin cAused

from the daily showers, very unnatural, not healthy.

i shower once or twice a week, depends what i have been doing, dirty garden work, or clean nothing.

i do small detailed washes daily, get it?,with warm water, but the teeth get brushed twice A day, sometimes more.

unless one eats so much garlic it is coming thru the pores, or one has been rubbing up against

filthy 'things' daily, or other gross things, don't shower every day. maybe sewer workers, farm workers,

as my daughter did years Ago when saving for university, she had to drop most of her clothes on the

porch each day, and go directly to the shower, we called the 'scent', 'el bisquay', lol

Yep, and so do I, for what I presume are obvious reasons, you don't want to approach an intimate partner with rancid naughty bits. I don't take baths either, that's just sitting in your own effluvia and spreading the dirt from your a$$ to your face. I shower when I feel I need to, with a frequency based on the assumption that I'll notice my stink a day or two before anyone else is likely to. I won't go to bed feeling sweaty and sticky, so in the warmer weather when I'm likely to be out doing grunt work in the yard or my shop, that might be every day, in winter when there's not much sweaty work to do, it might be once every two or three days. And my skin is smooth and fair as a baby's bottom, I look great naked... :)

bathing for myself is a ritual of sorts,it has nothing about being clean.I was born a stinky person,I need lots of showers.A couple times of year I like to go grunge??,wipes will do,sometimes I like feeling dirty.
My bathing ritual is about two hours, plus,as a busy person, I do not have the opportunities to take on this wonderful ritual,so when it occurs, its a good one.
Bathing for myself is rare in the warmer months,as a lover of Canada's 4 seasons,I look forward to winter for the simple fact,I bath more.I have a summer bathing ritual,it has everything to do with my bed sheets on the line. After an evening of work, followed by a hot bath, a few drinks on the patio,I run and remove my sheets from the clothes line, then Icrawl into a bed with a good read, pure heaven, I melt.
I welcome winter,as I have different enjoyments I always look forward to,this would be a different forum.
Don't tell my husband, but I have purchased expensive bath products,as a stinky person, I have lots of nice soaps.

you definitely do get it, and the summer months are when we do get more sweaty and yard dirty, hence,
more showers.

and, oh, yes, i'm sure you do ------i'm not too shabby either

i actually think most people who say they shower every day, don't.

I shower everyday during the week as part of the ritual in getting ready for work. I feel very refreshed afterwards and raring to go! Not so much on the weekend where I may or may not take either a shower or a bath.
