One of the world’s best-known scientists is selling his Nobel Prize medal in a bid to allow him to “re-enter public life” after being shunned for the past seven years for his comments linking race and intelligence.

American James Watson, who worked alongside British scientist Francis Crick while at Cambridge University and discovered the double helix structure of DNA, said he had become an “unperson” since his remarks in a newspaper interview in 2007.
He had told the Sunday Times black people were not of equal intelligence to white people.

Since the controversial comments Dr Watson has not given any public lectures and said he had been sacked from the boards of companies, adding “no one really wants to admit I exist”.

He told the Financial Times: “I apologise ... (the journalist) somehow wrote that I worried about the people in Africa because of their low IQ – and you’re not supposed to say that.”

He said it had been “stupid on my part” and insisted he is not racist “in a conventional way”.

Dr Watson said he would use the money from the sale of the medal, which Christie’s said could be sold for as much as $2.2m, to buy art, supplement his income and make donations to some of the institutions he is associated with including Clare College, Cambridge.

Auctioneer Francis Wahlgren told the Financial Times he did not expect Dr Watson’s previous remarks to affect the sale.

“There are a lot of personalities in history we’d find fault with, but their discoveries transcend human foibles,” he said.

The medal is expected to be auctioned in New York on Thursday with a reserve price of £1.6m.

Northern Ontario,
Him and Arafat....Good Lord!!

And Gunther Grass for The Tin Drum, which is absolute garbage.
The only thing about Nobel I really care about is the gunpowder I used to reload my handguns for target shooting.....for years....
"Nobel 69".....The maximum you can put in a casing and still be able to seat the bullet is about the maximum safe load a firearm can take.
I used it for years for target shooting, and the only drawback was that it was a bit dirty.....after all.... it was a powder designed for harpoon shooting.... but it was cheap.....lol

Richest Russian Buys Watson’s Nobel Medal, Plans to Return It

Alisher Usmanov, Russia’s richest man, bought the Nobel Prize medal of American biologist James Watson at a Christie’s auction and plans to return it.

Usmanov paid $4.1 million for the medal, awarded to Watson in 1962 for his work on discovering the structure of DNA, the billionaire’s USM Holdings said in a statement today.

“In my opinion, a situation in which an outstanding scientist sells a medal recognizing his achievements is unacceptable,” Usmanov said in the statement. “Dr. Watson’s work contributed to cancer research, the illness from which my father died. It is important for me that the money that I spent on this medal will go to supporting scientific research, and the medal will stay with the person who deserved it.”

The auction was held at Christie’s in New York on Dec. 4. The medal had been given a pre-auction estimate $2.5 million to $3.5 million, the auction house said.

Watson plans to give the proceeds to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the University of Chicago, and Clare College, Cambridge.

The gifts mean “I can continue to do my part in keeping the academic world an environment where great ideas and decency prevail,” Watson said in a statement last week. “I also intend to direct funds to the Long Island Land Trust and other local charities I have long supported.”

And nobody has the guts to admit that he is correct about the average standard of intelligence of blacks. It is written loudly all over the media every day and is carefully ignored.

Social inequality, the liberal mantra. I have lived it Waldo, you have assumed it.

you've lived what? Social inequality or improper assessments of intelligence based upon race?

I already told you that, are you slow to comprehend during your journey to perfection? Prove "improper assessments of intelligence based upon race?[/QUOTE]

you said you "lived it"... it's not clear from your statement just what "you lived". So I asked you for clarification. With your reply I still have no idea what "you lived". And now you want me to "unprove" your unsubstantiated statement... this one:

OK, one time for you. I am a Native who is the result of family with the brains and guts to live off reserve. I will not take your bait to prove a proven fact regarding race intelligence. I am fortunate enough to be in the higher echelon of my race regarding IQ.

I had no understanding of our background... nor was I baiting; I was simply responding to your posts. From what I read/inferred, you took exception to my suggestion that social factors could influence the results of so-called intelligence tests. In that same vein, you're now suggesting you place "in the higher IQ echelon of your race". Since you made a point of prefacing that statement by speaking to "living off reserve"... is that a factor in your described "echelon placement"?

I don't think there is any credible measure of intelligence. There are just tests that measure the likelihood of doing well in quantitative, non-abstract Western curriculums.

Intelligence tests don't measure higher order abstract, aesthetic, organizational, synthetic or inventive reasoning. They've proven useful in identifying those who will fit into scientific, educational and administrative bureaucracies with a minimum amount of originality and dissension from dictated 'truths'. The AGW organization is filled with these people.

That said Crick and Watson might well have made the most significant contribution to medical science, and science in general, in the 20th Century.. one filled with wonders.
