Re: General Leslie Moving Expenses

More to the point is, did he do anything immoral? -:)

Morality is fluid. Your idea of what is "moral", I bet, is different than mine.

Taking advantage of a job "perk" that you are legally entitled to does not enter into a "moral" discussion.

So my advice to kids these days, if you want to have rewarding careers full of honor and integrity, follow your hearts and find something you love doing for a living. If you want to be fat-minded, generally useless at anything but shuffling paper and typing on a computer, and have no fiscal worries for the rest of your life, go into management, get high marks, and sucker punch as many people as you can that are any kind of a threat to your rise to the top while sucking a$$ to anyone who can ease your rise to the top. Because that's\the system that was built in favor of the fata$$es for the fata$$es

Good advice but money can be quite addictive. I say do as you suggest but don't stop until you are the manager, that way you kill four birds with one stone, doing what you like, earning the big $$$$, managing properly and getting rid of a whole slew of bureaucratic riff raff. -:)

Maybe not, Gerry, it may tie in with the "Golden Rule".

and who are YOU to say what is and isn't a proper "perk"?

What I have found in my life, is that those that complain about the "perks" that others have, are those that don't have or can't get those particular perks.

I was supposedly born with a couple of brain cells, and working for the gov't, spent some time approving claims. Most people are honest, some get a little greedy.

That's obvious from the conservative senators. I don't see that in this instance. Unless, of course, you have evidence that the General received anything that he was not legally entitled to. Do you?

When a soldier enlists, they are informed that after 20 years of service, if they retire they are entitled to a paid move.
This benefit has been accounted by Treasury Board and is included in a Soldiers total pay package, same as dental is.
The Military receives on average 3 % more than a civil servant.
Yep- Join the Army- get rich.

When my hubby was in the military and decided to retire, we did not live in the city where we had planned on living. Because he had in excess of 20 years, thankfully, the military paid for our move. However, I agree that Mr. Leslie's move should NEVER have been reimbursed and anyone of a "lower rank" would not have passed the "smell test" I'm sure. This is taking a benefit way too liberally (pardon the pun) and some adjustments need to be made. A move to across town was not the intended purpose of this benefit, I don't care how many years you were in the Service and whomever approved it should be reprimanded. If the rules allowed for it, then they need to be changed. An exception might be someone retiring but living in military accommodations and having to move out into a civilian accommodation in the same place. Other than that, getting payment for a move within the same city just because they can, to me is unconscionable.

You were entitled to your entitlement, but Leslie is not entitled to his entitlement? Sorry, nbot buying it.

Whether or not he received something he shouldn't have is secondary.

" Leslie made headlines in 2011 when he told the Harper government in a landmark report that the Department of National Defence needed to take an axe to its bloated headquarters in order to meet future obligations. The Department of National Defence could not be reached for comment about the moving expenses Leslie claimed in 2012."

I see signs of hypocrisy and it's obvious to me that there is something rotten in the system. I moved 154 miles from Grand Forks to Vernon and had real estate expenses involved, all told my moving expenses didn't exceed $25,000. So was what he did wrong? I don't know, was it reasonable? No f**king way!!

Re: General Leslie Moving Expenses

This is a joke, right? This wanna be a politician person replies he has done nothing wrong in billing the dumb *** taxpayers (you & me), $73,000 for moving a few blocks. Well whoopee ding all to hell. Money for moving is supposed to for veterans making one last move to "Better their lives". Since when Mr. Leslie does moving down the road to a more expensive house have anything do do with the concept of receiving this money. Give your head a shake General. Nobody, I mean nobody is buying this. Now we have the Liberals defending this guy. How much you wanna bet he gets his *** kicked when he runs for office. Us dumb *** taxpayers are fed up with this kind of crap.

Million dollar severance packages for government office leaders is OK but not for soldiers. This guy is going to win just because this federal Conservative government is stealing more money from the Canadian taxpayer and ending up in the Tory war chest

He had an expensive property - When did you move?
He did nothing wrong.
Treasure Board defines the policies- outsourced to a contractor who knows all the rules, and handles all Military moves.

So what does an expensive property have to do with it? Some companies will pay real estate fees but up to a maximum amount. We moved in 2009 and that included 2 grand children. My real estate fees were approx. $11,000, the mover (a friend) cost $1000. We spent roughly $1000 on temporary accommodation. We may have had $2000 miscellaneous expenses. Where there a will there's a way. I think that guy found the way but never found the will. -:)

What should have probably happened was the guy be given $20,000 and told to figure it out for himself.

Maybe you should suggest that to the almighty federal Conservative party since they are in charge of that file

It's the realtor fees that inflate the cost of the move.
Yep.

Having gone from bottom to top is no guarantee that you can manage properly.
BTW, I stopped short of being the "manager" because I wouldn't be doing what I liked. I already said that I would not like being a desk jockey, don't like the job politics, and whatnot and that is why I stopped at being an LT. There's no way I would have been allowed to do the stuff I liked doing which was fighting fires and helping people out. Not everyone wants to become a statistic in the Peter Principle. So I don't think your suggestion is that good of one.

Most people are honest, some get a little greedy.
And becoming a manager after you've reached your dream job (which was your suggestion) is what, if not greedy?

Well, if you are the manager you can hire someone to do the desk stuff and then if you are unhappy with the money you can donate some of it to charity. -:)

Would they listen to me?

definition of hypocrisy: "the practice of claiming to have higher standards or more noble beliefs than is the case."
Did he claim to have higher standards when he suggested that the gov't chop off some of the bloatedness? Doesn't seem to me that he did.
As gerry pointed out, the onus of why that bill was large may be because of real estate fees.
The bill seems a bit extravagant to me, but I don't know all the facts.

Real estate fees are starting to come down. Some only charge 3%.

I think it includes criticism of others for something one does him/herself. I think we need to focus on the bigger picture than the individual involved. Government spending at all levels in Canada is a problem, so much so that those in direst need can't get help for the basic essentials of life. Cutting has to start somewhere and my opinion is this is a good place to start. Officials trips around the country and the world with a huge entourage is another one.

Anyone wonder why his fees were released? Typical Con smear job.
Leslie was a pain in the a-s-s- to Harper-

Chris Selley: Making war on Andrew Leslie | National Post

Just my humble opinion but I think $72,000 is far beyond the pale and as taxpayers are footing the bill, like any other Gov't. costs it should be transparent.

What a laugh. Trudeau Sr. did more to cripple the average soldier than anyone else in history, yet here you are, pretending to support them
