When my hubby was in the military and decided to retire, we did not live in the city where we had planned on living. Because he had in excess of 20 years, thankfully, the military paid for our move. However, I agree that Mr. Leslie's move should NEVER have been reimbursed and anyone of a "lower rank" would not have passed the "smell test" I'm sure. This is taking a benefit way too liberally (pardon the pun) and some adjustments need to be made. A move to across town was not the intended purpose of this benefit, I don't care how many years you were in the Service and whomever approved it should be reprimanded. If the rules allowed for it, then they need to be changed. An exception might be someone retiring but living in military accommodations and having to move out into a civilian accommodation in the same place. Other than that, getting payment for a move within the same city just because they can, to me is unconscionable.

Do all soldiers get a $73,000 allocation every time they relocate?

... Didn't think so

I don't know, and neither do you. So how about you research and get back to us. You can also look into what the actual rules are, and present those with citations since the article itself isn't enough for you.

Let's ask Goober..

Goobs... Did you receive a $73,000 moving expense when you retired?

I think that Dixie Cup also has some knowledge here as well.

DC - How about you and your husband?

Andrew Leslie, defence policy adviser to Justin Trudeau and 2015 Liberal candidate.

One of Canada’s most high-profile military leaders claimed more than $72,000 in expenses, including real estate fees, for a move from his Ottawa home to another residence in the city after he retired, CTV News has learned.

Documents obtained by CTV News show retired general Andrew Leslie, who once led Canada’s mission in Afghanistan, claimed the expenses for a move in 2012.

[...]

Leslie made headlines in 2011 when he told the Harper government in a landmark report that the Department of National Defence needed to take an axe to its bloated headquarters in order to meet future obligations.

I'm not surprised. A few years back I researched Canada's military and found we (if memory serves me) had some 200+ high brass, most retired, a couple dozen active I also looked at the American structure and figured out that if we were structured the same, we would need 9 active high brass. So it would appear that there's a jet stream a few find and ride to the top and once they've found their level in Peter's Principle of the Canadian Forces, they retire and life happily ever after on some peachy keen "rewards" or sometimes find an equally lucrative level on Peter's scale in the private sector and reap even more "rewards".
As a result, just about every position in the top gov't spots regardless of which area of gov't it is, leaves a trail of very wealthy and very happy fat a$$es who made in on our backs and retired and Canada's gov't levels are topheavy with these fata$$es (meant not so literally as psychologically). Apparently we love our managers and don't like our John and Sylvie Averages.
So my advice to kids these days, if you want to have rewarding careers full of honor and integrity, follow your hearts and find something you love doing for a living. If you want to be fat-minded, generally useless at anything but shuffling paper and typing on a computer, and have no fiscal worries for the rest of your life, go into management, get high marks, and sucker punch as many people as you can that are any kind of a threat to your rise to the top while sucking a$$ to anyone who can ease your rise to the top. Because that's\the system that was built in favor of the fata$$es for the fata$$es

Nope -we did not relocate to PEI. We stayed. But estimating the costs, using today's costs, would have been 40 to 50 K

Then, you didn't get a $73k expense benefit?.. And it sounds as if you moved quite a distance as well... More than just a 4 minute drive away.

How about when you were moved from place to place?.... Leslie also had a $40k move prior to retirement... Did you have that sort of moving expense when they switched your locations?

gerryh suggested clarity on my question if all soldiers received that same benefit... There was some question on my question asking if all soldiers got a $73,000 moving benefit.

That said, what's wrong with opening the books and analyzing the transaction?... if there is nothing to worry about, then all is well and fine.

Free move- Nope - DND posted him.
Yeah, there's a difference between being posted and retired with benefits.
Many companies in fact offer better benefits than DND.
Yes, but there's usually loads of stiff competition for those high positions and not everyone can find the jetstream to the top let alone ride it.
I passed on mine. At Lt. I could still man a hose. That stopped pretty much when one became a captain and I loved being on scene and in the middle of it and I hate deskwork. I also loved teaching kids about fire safety, the gear, and whatnot. Basically I became a firefighter to be a firefighter, not a desk jockey, inspector, or a politician. :D

Well, I may have sounded a bit bitter, but I have been getting an earful of how much management BC's healthcare system has been getting in comparison to how efficient and worthwhile it is as well as having made observations of my own about management. :)

Those benefits are classed as part of a soldiers pay package.so no different in my opinion.Same as our dental while serving, part of our pay package.

Cost about $5K when we moved from the Okanagan to this lovely spot about 25 years ago. In spite of having fought BC's forest fires for some 30 years I didn't get any moving expenses. Mind you, I wasn't full time forest service as I had my municipal firefighting job. lol

Ok, you did notice that the DND pays the realtor fees, right? If you don't like that fact, then lobby your MP to have it changed.

Re: General Leslie Moving Expenses

Him and Ruff deserve each other, they both make statements with no proof and are peeved when bullshyte is called....

Perhaps if you are going to call it "bull****", you should do what you expect others to do and post a link backing up your claim.

Having said that, you give yourself entirely too much credit if you think that you, a hypocrite and a troll could piss me off.

What would you know about a group made up of adults? Before calling someone else a "troll" you might want to take a close look at yourself.

I took your advice and I did. Das is still a troll.
