It's a direction. Move to your left, move to your right.
why use Geographic insdead of directional?

You will have to explain the lefty stuff. Normally a group of scientists at a place like Stanford is called a bunch of lefties by the right. Then you can explain why the study is what a lefty hates.

Purely nonsensical injection of politics on your part.
Oh I see. Thank you. But why those scientists are called lefty?

It's based on the seating arrangement of the parties in the French Assembly in 1789. Communists and socialists were seated on the left side of the hall, nationalists, royalists, and proto-fascists on the right side.

Because Wally calls anyone he doesn't like lefty. As far as he is concerned, the only thing in the world worse than a person on the political left is a non-white person on the political left.

Thanks for the reddy, Wally. Guess I kinda hit home, huh?

The military must be very confused politically: "Left, right, left, right, forward march..."

Actually, the cadence count is "left, left, left-right-left." Until I got to boot camp, I always thought that was three hops followed by two steps.

Turns out it wasn't nearly that funny.

In our boot camp it was "eft, eft, eft ite eft". Don't know why exactly....

That said, cancer is not the only disease associated with exposure to the smoke from cigarettes, and there is clear evidence of this. For children who 'passively smoke', there are documented and robust findings of increased risk for developing asthma, for contracting lung infections, for impaired growth, reduced pulmonary and breathing function, and many many more.

I used to constantly get ear infections so bad my ear drums would rupture. Once dad quit smoking in the house, I never got another ear infection. Ever.

Actually, the cadence count is "left, left, left-right-left.".....

What a bunch of leftie liberal pricks.

Point of order. From the study at the journal's website:

Therefore, it's incorrect to state no clear link between second hand smoke and cancer. The risk appears to be small, and dependent on the exposure, obviously. Though from home the study is behind a paywall, so it's not really possible to look with a critical eye into the methods used.

It's far more difficult to study the effects in adults, who have confounding exposures to many other risk factors of respiratory disease. Walter, as someone who makes a living at this, it behoves me to inform you that one study is rarely the definitive answer.

Yes, given the current theory of carcinogenesis, you are looking at a fairly linear dose-response realtionship. That is to say, exposure to two molecules of, say, benzene, doubles your chance of cancer compared to a single molecule of benzene.

I have a hard time believe there is a heck of a lot of second-hand exposure happening these days. It's rare for me to even get a whiff of smoke from smokers on the street, and certainly never in an indoor environment. Most of the laws being passed now (e.g. no smoking in civic parks in Vacnouevr) are based more on the inconvenience (i.e. stink) and littering than any definable health risk.
