It was entertaining for a few hours, just as I thought Avatar and 2001: A Space Odyssey were entertaining. But do I think real life should be like that? Do I think real life is like that? Nope and nope. What? You didn't get off on Lord of the Rings? Lots of adults like stories no matter how fanciful they are. Reality is not always a bed of roses and some people need an escape mechanism.
On the flip side of a birth, people seem to be devastated when a favorite actor or some other celebrity dies and it gets plastered all over the papers, tv, and the net for days on end while at the same time a few people in a Cessna might crash and die and it may get a small paragraph on page 4 or a couple sentences 15 minutes into the newshour on tv and then its gone.
McLuhan, "Celebrity is news. Everything else is entertainment". True but it's pretty pathetic. Same sort of context as McDonald's "good deeds" like Ronald McDonald House; people may think, "Oh, that's very humanitarian", but if you consider the crap they feed people and the fact that McDonald's exists simply to make money, I can't help but think that attitude is pathetic.
