This evening we gaze upon some solemn black & white images of some of the thousands of volunteers cleaning up the Bowness neighbourhood in NW Calgary. Taken by photographer Shaun Robinson, they provide a wonderful example of how effective the lack of colour in photographs can be in certain circumstances. Recommended background music while viewing the photos is provided by Canadian artist, Loreena McKennitt. Attentive viewers will notice that one of the volunteers is an Olympic class speed skater who was born in Romania but now is very much a proud Albertan.

Your solemn or witty reader tips are welcome, as always, in the comments.

Faces of the Flood | Shaun Robinson

Look at all the smiles on those wonderful dirty faces............Western spirit is alive and well. The black and white photos really do give the images an old world quality, Loc. Loved listening to Lorrena whilst I viewed the photos - great post and thanks for sharing.

That would certainly have the religious fanantics stuttering and stammering! -:)

I don't particularly want to get him flared up again. Let's just say I rec'd a "red" from him this morning as usual.

High River is a pretty town & a derelict lot would be worth buying.

I almost bought I a place in the town last November!

However, - I've been to Morris Manitoba, and I read the 1999 -2000 area flood control discussions. I couldn't quite understand why no one wanted a ring dike...

suppose they get one now...

Its important ot remember that , for all of Calgary's attention, 15 % of the evacuees are from High river.

Probably not anything beyond normal permanent alterations that occur. If what has happened is man caused as many believe it is, it's small potatoes compared to what Mother Nature can do. I know man can destroy themselves but in the final analysis they won't destroy the physical integrity of the planet. Man is too stupid to manage anything of those proportions.
