OTTAWA - The effort to strip Canadian terrorists of their citizenship will have to wait while the NDP ties up a parliamentary committee in procedural wrangling.

"We are not supportive of the minister gutting the entire content of a private member's bill and replacing it with his own legislation," NDP immigration critic Jinny Sims said Thursday.

The government is trying to amend Conservative MP Devinder Shory's private member's bill so Canadians would automatically renounce their citizenship after being convicted of a terrorist act, instead of an act of war as the bill originally stated.

So the Tories have asked for more time in committee in order to get Commons approval to introduce the amendments, but NDP members of the immigration committee have filibustered for days to block the government's effort.

Seems a rather odd bill. What if the terrorist is home grown, like someone whose family has been here for generations. Where would e deport them to. This sounds like a knee jerk reaction bill similar to putting the Japanese Canadians in prison camps during WWII.

After a person has attained Canadian Citizenship it is nearly impossible to deport them.
And it does not apply to anyone that is born here. Reason why many come to Canada to have a baby. A get out of trouble card.

Cliffy you are right on this one, I think we have to look at the intent of the bill before we do
anything. Then again who would classify any act as a terrorist act vs any other description?
If the person was a naturalized Canadian citizen that would be difficult to strip them of their
citizenship. Secondly if it turned out they were not guilty down the road what then?
It should also be pointed out, when you open this slippery door we start down the road to
other instances where citizenship can be revoked and people deported. No not by this or
any government I can think of. But Germany had a government that went down this road.
Remember Mr Hitler? It started with revoking citizenship then citizens rights then they
were just considered vermin and no excuse necessary.
If citizenship is to be questioned what about those who come here get their passport stamped
Canadian and then go home until they are older and want to collect pension without paying
their share. See there is another reason to revoke a citizenship. Instead why not label them
a Criminal, and put them in prison forever without being released for bonafide acts of terror?
That way we are protected from criminals, and we are not threatened with the erosion of who
is and is not a citizen. There is a clear choice we can react to emotion, or act in accordance
with reason. While I would like to deport any number of not so stellar people I realize the law
protects us all. Let us not give anymore power to the State than is required.

I think it sounds like a knee jerk reaction to Amir Khadar. How things would have been easier had they just stripped his citizenship when he murdered the American soldier in Afganistan. Could have got rid of his whole family too. Intead we weclome the as-shole back onto Canadian soil.

Still leaves the question. . . if you want to strip a Canadian of his citizenship and deport him, to where do you deport him?

It would have been interesting to see how the FLQ was dealt with if this law had existed back then.
