Look, I'm a Conservative Party member.....and I don't get this one at all........silly, and a waste of time and money.

And as someone pointed out....are our tax dollars to be spent promoting Wiccans, or Satanists, or Paganism??

Ludicrous.

Can you guys elaborate?

I have yet to see people get beaten in the streets for their religon.... I have yet to see people not included at various venues because of their faith????

When people enter the country, being christian isnt mandatory its optional

i agree this is a waste of money.....

People who live their faith, whatever it is have it good in this country....

Just because you guys dont like a few rednecks doesnt mean the country as a whole is borken

Pray your money is worth something, DB.

In Canada only 31% of people identify positively with any religion.

That means 69% of the people are served negatively or not at all by religion in this country. Normally an unproductive practice is discontinued. The minority 31% are ruling and ruining the lives of the majority with their loud music and bizarre cultish goings on.

I worship the sun, I have nothing to fear but clouds and snow and fierce winds and the occasional fireball, thats god in these parts and besides they are millions of tax dollars away from study and consultations before they can begin efficient inquizitions.

Well the next visit to Iran for the Minister will mean they have something in common the
department of religious affairs. Any bet when the next government takes over there will
be no mention of such nonsense? The reason this happened is because the Conservative
Party is not the conservative party its a hybrid of the Reform and conservative parties.
Reform hijacked the Tories some years back. Harper now feels safe to apply the
religious social conservative agenda Soon it won't be transgressions of free speech it will
be saying things against the religious state of affairs its nonsense and the sooner Canadians
speak out the sooner this will stop
All Churches should be made to conform to the constitutional law of the land no exceptions

Northern Ontario,
No, probably not, because they don't let the public or the media in to see it, but an opening prayer is part of the procedure every day the house is open.
This is the prayer that is read in parliament......

It is non sectarian.......
Almighty God, we give thanks for the great blessings which have been bestowed on Canada and its citizens, including the gifts of freedom, opportunity and peace that we enjoy. We pray for our Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth, and the Governor General. Guide us in our deliberations as Members of Parliament, and strengthen us in our awareness of our duties and responsibilities as Members. Grant us wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to preserve the blessings of this country for the benefit of all and to make good laws and wise decisions. Amen.

Unless I understand it, I don't think it's about promoting any religion, but rather simply protecting universal rights.
However, as I've pointed out above, it's still redundant plus it makes us look like hypocrites.

By the way, I'm not criticizing the principles behind such an office. Indeed some religious communities are severely oppressed; just look at the Baha'is of Iran.

But honestly, what jurisdictional authority will this Office have in iran for instance? What will it do that the UN High commissioner for Human Rights isn't doing already? How will it operate efficiently abroad while dodging criticism of religious inequality in our own constitution? Etc.

A Catholic dean of a Christian college was chosen to head the Office.
Christian college dean named to head religious freedom office - Politics - CBC News

How ironic considering the separate school system.

Now if we want to get technical, there is a distinction between religious equality and religious freedom. But for the most part, most people will get suspicious if we insist on making such a distinction and opposing the one while defending the other. It's like saying we'll defend your freedom of religion but we oppose the notion of legal equality.

In principle though, had it not been for that irony, I'd have seen no problem with a Catholic dean heading it in principle.

Also, if the conservative Party acknowledged the irony of the separate school system but either defended it, explained that freedom is more important than equality in relative terms but that it intends to deal with the separate school system eventually, or some other argument and actually explain in a rational manner how this office could be useful, and came up with a really rational argument, he could win me over. But if he just hopes I' too stupid to see all the ironies and insists on beind so secretive about all the ironies in this, redundancies, then no can do.

This is the height of pandering at best. Next it will be if you don't support this you are against God.
Give me a break. The other question I have is why do we need a prayer in Parliament period?
I can see singing the National Anthem but a prayer.

What is wrong with a nondenominational prayer. No one says they have to listen.
