Well I'd rather leave my kids in the company of Lance than any of those other untrustworthy folks I mentioned.

So he can teach them how to cheat?

And how many people can you really trust?

I know a handful!

But really do we want to get hung up on semantics? If it makes people happy I could substitute the term "sleazy".

So, Lance Armstrong is on par with most world leaders past and present then.

Try and be a non sleazy world leader and you wind up like Bob Stanfield or Joe Clark.

We like sleazy winners, and get all twisted when the ****ers get caught...................whoo knew. ?? Maybe no one, but lots suspected.

Betcha a bunch of sports team owners "encouraged" their players to use steroids. They got to bask in the limelight when their team was on top, make a fortune, and diss the poor pricks when they were outed. Well, not "poor", but ya know what I mean.

It's mostly bull**** and I don't have a dog in the fight. **** em all.

Is there any point to comparing one crook with another?

Perhaps Clark and Stanfield did more for their country being the way they were.

One poster contrasted him to one who steals from old ladies or sells crack cocaine, but actually what he did MIGHT or might not be worse. Lance is stealing from the honest athletes in that race who has possibly worked their entire lives to win a medal honestly.

Famous people in politics, sports or entertainment (well, they are all entertainers) are not worth the time of day or wasting brain cell power to consider. Our culture is one of hero worship, but most real heroes, the ones who put themselves in danger to help their fellow man, are humble and shy away from the spotlight.

Never knew how much he was worth. I understand that there are lawsuits coming or ongoing.

Imagine there may be a few libel cases for slandering people who were telling the truth.

Lance Armstrong: How Lance will hold onto most of his $125m fortune despite growing calls for refunds | Mail Online

Goober's comments are bang on as far as why I don't like Lance Armstrong. Its not so much that he cheated and lied about it. Yes that is despicable, but the main reason why I don't like Lance Armstrong is that he destroyed people's lives and ended careers when they tried to expose the truth about Lance Armstrong.

All the people that Lance accused of lying and sued for defamation of character have been vindicated. These people are not just owed the money they paid Armstrong in damages for telling the truth, they are also entitled to damages for Lance's defamation of their character when he lied repeatedly under oath and at press conferences about his cheating. Lance also said some horrible things about the wife of one of his teammates when she claim Armstrong was dirty.

Hopefully by the end of this process, Lance will be penniless.

That said, Armstrong did raise money for the fight against cancer, but that also helped make him more marketable for his sponsors. So even those "acts of charity" were still self serving.

BTW, I am not so naive to believe that Armstrong is in a minority among top level athletes. I suspect that nearly all top level athletes in every sport are cheaters just like Lance Armstrong.

The only way to separate the clean athletes from the cheaters is to give the cheaters their own venue. Just like we have the special Olympics for athletes with disabilities, we should also have the medically enhanced special Olympics. I can see many positive medical benefits and spinoffs coming from research into how to push the human body to the limits with drugs, gene therapy, blood doping... which might have beneficial application for treating illness, healing injuries and aging (which will soon be commonly viewed as a treatable disease). Also, everyone would become aware of the long term consequences of performance enhancing drug use.

If Lance had competed in the "drugs allowed" version of the Tour de France, he wouldn't be a cheater or a liar. He'd be admired for fighting his way back from cancer to the top of his sport... through the use of therapeutic and performance enhancing drugs.

He proved it, but is still disgraced.

And it would seem there's more punishment to come. It's not me to judge others; it's up to the courts to mette out justice.

how would anyone ever know who is clean and who is dirty, some are caught, most are not, because the
attention is only on the winners, the others slide on thru, so it is the 'sport' that is the loser.

I don't 'dwell on money', I am concerned about 'how' to fix the problem. Most of the cheaters did not
win big amounts of money, only a few did.
Everyone seems to dwell on money, that is only the edge of the problem of drugs in sport.

In cycling I wonder if anyone is clean, that is also a very grey area, and if some did ride clean, they
knew they didn't have a chance, just rode for the love of the sport, so good for them, they can be
happy with their efforts and know they will never fail a drug test.

How exactly did armstrong 'pass' all of those drug tests he was given, which
were many indeed, that is a puzzle.
There must have been people who turned a blind eye many times, because that
just doesn't make sense to me, I can see him slipping thru a few times, but
not 'that' many.

Re: What a crock of sh*t- lowlife gets to continue "ride" to fame with Oprah!

I believe that much of the backlash against Armstrong is the result of Lanny having used his name/fame to raise awareness and money for a lot of decent and charitable causes. He fabricated a reality about himself that made the general public take note and feel good about this man's accomplishments, particularly in the face of cancer let alone that he was an older competitor in a highly physically demanding event.

Armstrong perpetuated this lie for many years. He fought the allegations for many years and folks backed him for all that time... Now that he's come clean, one cannot feel anything but complete betrayal.

He conned the public for a long time and now he's apologizing and seeking forgiveness hoping that all will be forgotten and fade with time.

Sorry Lanny, but you will likely go down in history as one of the 21st century's most prominent fraudsters.

Now here is an interesting point. Lance may well go down as one of the biggest frauds in recent history but what did he really do. He used drugs to win a few bike races that are quite meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Compare this to Bernie Madoff, who is unknown by many, who scammed billions of dollars in the biggest ponzi scheme in history and is never talked about. Now really, who is the bigger and more newsworthy fraud?

The winner of the Tour de France gets 450,000 Euros plus another million or so in other perks. Did he give
that back?

Considering how much of that went to Livestrong and helped others, I'd say it's been repaid in full and then some.

Consider this:

Armstrong sued the Sunday Times and two of its journalists over an article that appeared in the newspaper in 2004 concerning the doping allegations. After a series of rulings in Armstrong's favor in the UK courts, the two sides reached a settlement, the size of which was not disclosed. The newspaper also issued an apology to Armstrong. One senior source at the newspaper said that the case cost it about $1 million.
Sunday Times Lance Armstrong Lawsuit: UK Paper Considers Legal Action Against Cyclist

Lance Armstrong should not only be required to pay all that money back, he should also have to issue an apology to the investigative Times Reporter and pay for any damages to that person's career and any financial losses resulting from Armstrong's false lawsuit. Very likely the investigative reporter and his editor faced serious consequences for costing their employer a million dollars. Likely people were fired as a result.

What about what Lance Armstrong did to Betsy and Frankie Andreu?

Frankie Andreu, former cycling team-mate of Lance Armstrong, and his wife Betsy, who testified against the now disgraced rider in 2005, say the all-powerful cyclist made their life "hell" after they accused him of doping. Ahead of the airing of Lance Armstrong's Oprah Winfrey interview, in which has been reported that the former US Postal admits to doping, a former team-mate has attacked the retired rider for ruining the lives of those who previously spoke out against him. Frankie Andreu, who captained the US Postal team along with Armstrong from 1998-2000, said that he and has wife Betsy had been "ripped apart by Lance and all of his people and all his supporters repeatedly" for having the courage to speak what is now being recognised as the truth about the rider's doping.

"And it's not only us, he's ruined a lot of people lives."

Betsy Andreu was one of the first people to publicly accuse Armstrong of using performance-enhancing drugs. She testified in a case brought by SCA Promotions challenging a multi-million dollar bonus paid to Armstrong in 2005.

Armstrong Teammate: Lance 'Ruined People's Lives' If They Accused Him Of Doping - Business Insider

Don't you think these people and everyone else Armstrong defamed to hide his lying and cheating deserve compensation from Armstrong? Lance turned these people into pariahs. Lance Armstrong fans harassed these people for years and made their lives a living hell. Now that what they've been saying all along has been proven to be the truth, don't they deserve financial compensation and an apology from Lance Armstrong?

No sense comparing lowlifes, Nick, but Bernie is serving 150 years in prison, Lance will likely never serve a day. Bernie stole money, Lance stole life time dreams of honest cyclists who spent much of their life working to fulfill what was to become an impossible dream. One wise poster stated it "isn't about money" and I agree- some things are much more valuable than money, like a clear conscience and pride in what you do in an honest fashion.

I won't be surprised if he ends up doing jail time for defamation of character, etc. Or if not that, a lot of law suits.

I expect Lance will be sued by everyone he has ever hurt or falsely sued for defamation. By the time the dust settles, I expect Lance will be broke.

I would personally be amazed if he spends 5 minutes in jail, he has enough money socked away to hire the sleaziness lawyers in the country. Our only hope would be an honest judge, but that is pretty remote as before you get to be an honest judge you generally have to be a sleazy lawyer.-:)

you gotta be kidding, honest cyclists, I wouldn't be surprised if there is none, but wishful thinking
on your part.

armstrong is just the flavour of the day right now, another athlete who took drugs, the list is long,
and as time goes by, this will pass, and new ones will appear.

The drug testing experts can't keep up with the expertise of the cheaters, not much different with
drug dealers and other such crooks who stay one step ahead of the law, with their high tech
equipment.

Of course they don't all cheat. You know the ones trailing behind in the race, or those who didn't make it? They're still cyclists, no?
