Northern Ontario,
Yup, that would have helped a whole lot. But then again, catching the fact that they weren't keeping the proper documentation back before 2005 would have prevented all this. Or is it a matter of the government NOT wanting to prevent this. Kind of like setting up someone to fail.
Yes It's much easier to look the other way.....Around here the Ministry of natural resources very rarely charge natives with poaching, unless it was the slaughter of several animals and the spoiling of meat....when I asked one of the officers why they told me it was too much trouble because they have to go through too many hoops in order to do it.
It might just be that this idle no more movement will finally shame the government into action and stop the crooked dealings of some of those chiefs, starting with the one in Attawapiskat.

Hither and yon
Atleo has spoken.
Canada is going to have a complete "reset".
The meeting tomorrow will not be about negotiations or treaties.
The chiefs will present their demands from a nation to nation perspective.
If the demands are not met several grand chiefs have explained "we will shut Canada down".
A grand chief in Manitoba says the warriors are ready to go "all the way".
All resource extraction and development in Canada will be a shared renenue stream with First Nations.
More demands to follow tomorrow.

On another note, the police commissioner for Ontario as well as a police chief for the OPP have completely refused to enfore judicial orders regarding
First Nations in press conferences. So there goes rule of law in Ontario.

On yet another note, a judge has ruled all non-status natives and metis living off reserve (around 600,000 I believe) now have full status rights and are to be
treated the same as all other First Nations.

Things are warming up.

Oh BALONEY.

Teaching someone to keep books showing where the money was spent should take all of 30 minutes.

Anyone that can balance a chequebook.,.......or do their own taxes.

Chiefs only matter on the Rez.

Urban Natives are getting screwed by the Chiefs.

There is "f*ck 'em attitude towards those living urban off Rez.. A division and grudge match.

They get screwed on funding for school, extended Social Servies benefits, business training and funding which was shifted from the Province and Feds to the Bands under Self-Governance.

The Education funds are easy to scam a well as Social Services money.

Community Social programs in the towns and cities which not a penny is funded by any Chief and Rez are having their budgets adjusted accordingly and are struggling to assist the shortcomings as demand on their services increase in the urban world.

Money that could have went into youth, job training, apprenticeships, transitional services is being spent on emergency and supplementary pay outs.

What the government SHOULD do is to stop all fundings until the natives can prove they know how to handle it.

that sounds awesome. Can we apply it to the government overall as well pretty please? Because they haven't proven their ability either.

Problem is we have that kind of thinking on each side of the issues.

Yeah, because they're ultimately the same. Bureaucrats without the full trust of their constituents, acting like they rule the world because they won a vote. Some are good, some are bad, some are downright corrupt. And each blames their shortfalls and failings on the other, because they make convenient scape goats.

And the Chiefs cannot appear weak- they will make demands that some will see as unacceptable- But it is a start-
I Understand rev sharing- BC does it- But holding an economy hostage is also unacceptable.
To much corruption within Indian Affairs and the same applies to some FN peoples- last thing anyone wants is to lock in corruption.
Both sides have to be held accountable-

Idle No More: Shawn Atleo says Friday meeting will be ‘moment of reckoning’ for Stephen Harper: | Canadian Politics | Canada | News | National Post

Also needed at Friday’s meeting, Atleo said, is a “high-level” commitment from the government to create a long-term plan to consult, meet, track and evaluate the progress on issues facing aboriginal reserves. That, the AFN believes, would require a new “machinery of government” to be placed either inside the Prime Minister’s Office or in the Privy Council Office, the central bureaucracy that assists the prime minister and cabinet.

Manitoba Grand Chief Derek Nepinak said his chiefs are looking for more than a minor policy shift Friday; they want a major change in the relationship between the federal government and First Nations. He said he wanted to see a new revenue-sharing model between First Nations and provincial and federal governments, along with co-management between aboriginals and other governments of resource extraction, a key component of Harper’s economic development policy.

Nepinak said if the government didn’t acquiesce to demands, aboriginals and the Idle No More protest movement had the “people and numbers that can bring the Canadian economy to its knees.”

“These are demands, not requests,” he said. “We’re demanding (Harper) agree with us because we have the true power.”

Do they seriously think the government will negociate with a group that makes demands and threatens violence if their demands are not met?

These are a small minority- you have hot heads on both sides. But the anger is there.

You are quite correct....I use "left" as well, but it is not really relevant anymore.

Perhaps "progressives" should be entered (complete with parentheses) wherever one sees "left".

and where do I fit colpy? What pigeon hole you trying to stuff me into? Keep in mind I supported Ford, and I support Spence in what she is trying to do.

I don't stuff you into a pigeon hole.

You can be very socially conservative.

You can be very "progressive".

You're just square.

Why would I want to stuff you in a round hole???

BTW, seeing as you brought it up....what pigeon hole do you stuff me into??? LOL

No....don't tell me.

Here's the kicker.. I didn't have the opportunity to hear the platforms of these decision-makers NOR did I have an opportunity to vote for any of them
