As the Stones once said, you don't always get what you want, but if you try sometime you might just find, you get what you need.

How big are the buildings, how much insulation have you got in them, what work is done in the shop? How much land do you have?

Does your bill give you hourly or daily spike usage? Do you farm the land? do you have electric motors on the augers? a grain drier? If you want to convert the machinery away from diesel I need to know what self propelled machines you have.

3.1kW/h per hour average. Spikes up to 8

I have a wholesale price for a 20kW wind generator with 30 12v 200Ah batteries this doesn't include set up and sparky services....what did you find?

Haven't started looking yet, Yorktons climate data is not available for some reason.. I wouldn't recommend jumping at any one option just yet.

That what the battery bank is for. BTW 30 batteries is going to require yet another building to heat and house the batteries, invertor and grid tie controls.

Try using this to find more about Yorkton's weather. NOAA Station Id: CN71138040190800

Wind

Over the course of the year typical wind speeds vary from 0 m/s to 8 m/s (calm to fresh breeze), rarely exceeding 12 m/s (strong breeze).

The highest average wind speed of 5 m/s (gentle breeze) occurs around May 8, at which time the average daily maximum wind speed is 8 m/s (fresh breeze).

The lowest average wind speed of 3 m/s (gentle breeze) occurs around July 25, at which time the average daily maximum wind speed is 7 m/s (moderate breeze).

The average daily minimum (red), maximum (green), and average (black) wind speed with percentile bands (inner band from 25th to 75th percentile, outer band from 10th to 90th percentile).

I love it when someone says to me, why won't you accept my reality, and the
reason is because its is not necessarily reality. We have seen the world heat
and cool over millions of years. Saying we are going to prevent global warming
is like stating we can forbid the tide to come it.
I am not saying we are contributing in some measure that may be but be damned
if we can sit here with all the resources in the world and plead poverty.
Yes poverty. We have people who don't want the use of oil which is cheaper than
farming with a horse and more efficient for the environment. If we were to take the
tractors and trucks away and go to horse and wagon we would not have enough
food for the world and we would take half the productive land to feed the horse.
This is a tiny example of the madness. Why do we have to ship our raw materials
to Asia, so we can have a blue sky?
Actually if we want to do something for the environment we should insist all the
manufacturing is done here under first world standards that way it would be good
for workers and the environment. The problem is we couldn't exploit kids in Asia
so we can have cheap running shoes. Being green in the west is about the money
and the profit margin with lip service to a clean environment. It is spurred on by
those who have turned the environment into a new religion and if you don't believe
a Spanish Inquisitor should be sent to your door.
Its all window dressing and lip service. The reason I won't accept entirely all the
preaching of the movement, is because I can see through the thin layer of veneer
that perpetuates the constant campaign to get people to join the church of Green
and my answer is No Thank You

damngrumpy, it isn't that people don't want to use oil, it is that we cannot continue to use it. We have passed peak oil as I understand it, and our use is still accelerating. We are running out of the stuff. We should be preparing ourselves, our farmers, for life after oil, we should be conserving the stuff as hard as we can, not shipping it out to wherever as fast as we can. As an added incentive the effect of our fossil fuel consumption on the climate is measurable and confirmed. It adds up to a perfect reason to use as little as possible.

How do you manage the headaches from the sky bashing you on the head? We will NOT be running out of oil in the next 30 years and probably not in the next 100 years. Meanwhile we can start using synthetic oil or corn oil. I fully agree that where we can we start substituting alternatives............gradually over a period of several years. Meanwhile those horrible stinking tarsands will sustain us!

When I'm 344 I'll start to worry about oil running out.

That's a relief, it probably won't happen in my lifetime either!

Or mine. But most people would probably agree that it's unwise to wait until something runs out. If you drive off the end of a pier you should have been concerned before you ran out of pier to drive on...
