It is, after all, THEIR head.

Medicare should not be used as a bludgeon to force societal norms on people.

Its their head but our medical system that bears the brunt if they're too stupid to protect themselves and require more extensive medicinal treatment when they crash. I'm still surprised by the lack of helmet laws in various US states: I'm surprised the life/medical insurance companies don't have language to the effect that "if you don't use PPE, you're on your own".

Cool, we're on our way to a safer society...

I guess we'll see a ban on rock climbing, racing, cross country and down hill skiing, mountain biking, wind surfing, ice fishing, boating, swimming.

All these things put pressure on an already over taxed health care system.

Good call BC.

I don't see much demand for banning but there is a push to do it safely. Just like at work.
Loggers that are all about safety at work and complain about every little thing but go cut firewood in shorts, sneakers and a beer or three don't grasp the concept.

It all boils down to letting a little reasonable common sense permeate all aspects our lives doesn't it?

Hmmm, seems that the lack of a little common sense issue creeps into a lot of our problems.

So if we tossed a few dozen politicians off a bridge would they ban politicians or bridges?

The smart answer is to put higher rails on bridges.

But they do grasp the concept about sh*t disturbing and causing grief for the employer. I worked with a guy like that, refused to work unless it was 100% safe and if it was refused to work for some other reason..............too hot, too cold, too steep, too flat, too difficult, didn't like the asshole he had to work with, etc. etc. etc. etc.

You can only make things so safe.

What's the difference between riding with a beanie helmet and free climbing?

Terminal velocity is around 120....
Reached at roughly 1000' in free fall, depending on the drag coefficient.

Although I'm not sure how that's relevant to the discussion.

You can free climb without any form of safety gear.

An accident in either case, has the potential to be equally severe. Actually, I'd say a fall from free climbing v. motorcycle accident, while wearing a beanie helmet, has the greater potential for serious bodily harm.

Why is that OK, but a beanie helmet isn't?

Not relevent - just the difference between any climb (just over 0 up and around 120 down) and a bike ride (at 60) I figure all a helmet really does is leaves behind an identifiable head.

Me? I preferred the beanie - back in the days I could ride. Nay-sayers can toot their horns for full face all they want. That's their opinion. Some folk don't take the time to experience all that's around them in one of the greatest of opportunities anyhow. I enjoyed full spectrum sound. An eighth-inch of fibreglass and a layer of foam tends to muffle high-frequencies (like the birds)

When I was in Europe with the air force a few years back, they had something called a May bug......same as
a June bug I guess. Those bugs would weigh a couple ounces at least. I used to wonder about meeting one
of those bugs on a motorcycle with your forehead at 60 mph. Probably get your attention....

Don't forget pointy sticks... They're deadly in the hands of a kid that's poking at rocks by the creek
