You got it figured out Cliffy, just got back from Safeway- where 3/4 of the shelves are loaded up with absolute garbage, yet everyone is lined up at them, but I guess this didn't include the 80% of the population that is screaming "poverty". All kinds of "convenience" junk at inflated prices because nobody has the ability, time or inclination to prepare healthy meals themselves from scratch anymore.
I just made a chicken Teriyaki stir fry with carrots, onions, brown rice, corn and peas. It should last me three meals. I feel so rich!

I guess- if mindless nattering is more important than a place to live!

I'm strictly talking about cost here. If you don't have enough money to pay for an iPhone then obviously you don't have enough money to pay for rent.

It could be that you have enough money to pay for an iPhone, but not enough for rent. In which case, there are a lot of people who just live with their parents - and that's showing in the stats for youth unemployment. All these figures fit well into the theme of the recent recession and the adverse negative effect it is having on people between 15 - 24.

I made a turkey soup this morning from an old carcass in the freezer c/w lentils, barley, carrots, turnip, onion, cabbage, chicken soup mix, thyme, bay leaves and cayenne pepper. Big enough pot to last a week.

No rent, living with parents...

How does the iPhone play into the necessity of internet access there?

Ma and Pa can't afford dial up?

If you want to strictly stick to the cost angle. Maybe you should just stick to the cost angle. Instead of making up justifications for the purchase of an expensive cell, and carrying a hefty monthly service charge.

It's the other way around.

Many are relegated to those spots because there are not enough opportunities to get out of the basement.

There are plenty of opportunities. Just have to let go of the video game, get out of the basement and find a job. It may not be what you think you were destined to do or where you want to live but unless you have zero self esteem or like the OWS crowd figure yourself entitled to someone else's money it can be done.

No, they've been put into that situation and have basically given up on trying to pinch pennies. Essentially, the fact that they have become accustomed to living with the rents is a reflection of the lack of opportunity for people of that age.

Well it depends on the industry as well - I know for a lot of teachers, they're simply fukked if they're just entering the workforce. But one would hope that someone can get a job either in their field or something that is complementary to their degree. Business graduates driving cabs for a living is not good for them and not good for the rest of us either.

Better for both them and us than drawing welfare! With all the bureaucracy I wonder how much longer business can survive before the bubble bursts. Maybe when the Big Mac jumps from $10 to $12.

1, Load of sh!t.

2, When the economy landed on my ass, I didn't think "Oh what the hell, my mortgage payment is due, I might not make it, I should just buy an expensive cell".

I got down to making money.

I live in a rural area, with extremely limited opportunity for young people, beyond f!cking and watching the grass grow. And trust me, there are tons of them doing just that. Yet my kids have managed to do something with themselves, without the benefit of $500 cells, $60+/month service fees, or a university education.

My youngest (On top of his other ventures) and his best friend just decided to raise chickens, slaughter them and sell them. I've gone over their plan, they stand to make a fair penny. Mind you, they'll be working for less than minimum wage at first. But it's an income that rivals working the window at the local Timmies after school.

Where there's a will, there's a way.

Many of the Occupiers have no will power. Your justifications and excuses, only serve to legitimize that.

Can't rely on anecdotal experience to solve this one.

The truth is that most employers are simply hiring only those with experience because business isn't what it used to be in most industries. This expectation for everyone to simply juggle jobs to make ends meet is unfair and naive.

Bullshyte.

Go where the work is, and get educated in what is in demand.

What is "stupid", is deciding what one wants to do for a living.... get an education for it, and THEN find out there is no demand. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

It's not anecdotal, it's what people do when they have a good set of priorities, and aren't to stuck up to take the jobs that get the job done.

It's how the country was carved out of the wilderness.

The truth is that most employers are simply hiring only those with experience because business isn't what it used to be in most industries.
Ahh, to be back in the heady days of when I couldn't get high paying work without papers.

I should have started a movement, instead of getting my papers.

Silly me...

Disagree.

There are some positions that people are specially qualified for. They cannot get these positions due to market conditions that they have to wait out for until the government makes the right investment to get things moving again. Of course they can find another job in the mean time, but if qualified people don't ever have the opportunity to get the best fit for them, it's actually a drag on the economy we all suffer because of it.

You can say what you want about the American Dream and how a free market is inherently fair or some other such naivety, but the truth is that the government will always be pushing and pulling levers to move the economy in a particular direction.

Wow... you are so fu cking dense sometimes. IF THERE IS NO DEMAND FOR A PARTICULAR TYPE OF WORK, DON'T GO TO SCHOOL FOR IT. FIND OUT WHAT IS IN DEMAND AND GET EDUCATED FOR THAT. PRESTO, NO PROBLEM GETTING A JOB.

Also, if what you have been doing for the last ten years suddenly takes a shyte, RE-EDUCATE/TRAIN yourself and move on.

People don't go to school based entirely on opportunity. They go primarily because they believe they are skilled in that field.

And the tragedy is that those who are especially qualified still don't get jobs because they are given to less qualified seniors.

No, STUPID people do that. Intelligent people look at the market, research the future potential, and then make a decision based on what they found out.
